Yea, you will find that not uncommon though. A lot of profs allow you to do something like admit to being unprepared prior to class and take one absence, or if you get called on and are unprepared, you take two.

So are the "I didn't brief a single case and got A++++++" people lying bastards? Or is Greenfield the only one who says 8+ absences will drop your grade?

Other profs don't make you have briefs at the ready, and all have different attendance policies. I book briefed (underlined/took minimal notes in the margins) for all of my classes and that was more than enough for me generally, but I also wasn't trying too hard to be prepared for class or trying to nail cold calls.

this is good advice (for someone who didn't have greenfield). for the record, greenfield literally makes you hold up a paper print out of a brief, so, TCR= if you have greenfield , do a written brief, or hope that you're having a lucky day. book briefing will simply not work in his class.

Briefing cases helps far more with cold calls than the actual exams (and doing well on cold calls is not going to help your grade). Briefs are generally unnecessary unless the professor will actively penalize you for not doing it (Greensfelder Greenfield might be the only professor with that sort of policy). The only possible exception to this might be Mandelker, since his exam is very case heavy.

This is actually a valid point and would probably work. Reminds me of the advice a 2L gave me about Mandelker last year. "He can't hear at all so if you don't know the answer, just mumble something a couple times and he'll move on."

Thanks for the input to those of you who replied to my initial post! Anybody else have input/suggestions/tales of horror about Sadat (both International Law & International Criminal Law), Smith (Employment Discrimination), and Levin (Immigration Law)? Also, has anyone had the Socialist Law in Transition Seminar with Foster (or any professor, for that matter)?

Any and all thoughts and/or advice would be greatly appreciated!

At the end of the last day of Admin law class Prof. Levin wished us all best luck on the final. Then he paused, and said, "As they say in contract law... once more into the breach."

First joke of the semester, but I thought it was hilarious. I think a significant portion of the class didn't get the joke simply because their consciousnesses could not believe the man had actually told a joke. Levin is dry, but a good professor, and as someone noted, his exams are difficult but fair.

For Rosen's Evidence class, he has 1 required text (the Fed Rules of Evidence) and 3 recommended books. Can anyone share if you actually need anything out of the recommended books or if they are helpful

Did anyone not use supplements during 1L? It sounds like they're commonly used, but I'm not completely sold on them just yet. Would it make sense to wait until later in the semester to see if I need them?

I didn't use any second semester and did better than first semester when I used them. Spent more time with outlines and taking practice tests instead. I think they are a bit overrated, mostly because you want to tailor your exams to the prof as much as possible.

I've never used a supplement, and I don't think they are generally necessary (some people might disagree, though). Honestly it probably just depends on the person.

Online case briefs are usually helpful enough for figuring out the point of the case if you're lost (and everyone will be lost at some point). Also class.

First off, nobody in the bottom 20% is going to answer this question, especially given the way you asked it. Also, I highly doubt most employers could tell someone is in the bottom 20% at Wash U based off their resume/GPA given the massive grade inflation. There's really the top third and then everyone else.

This is a question for those who have taken (and hopefully done well in) DeGeest's Contracts.

The syllabus indicates that he gives up to ten students up to three bonus points each for "excellent contributions in class." If anyone knows -- does he notify the recipients? And is it a system where each excellent contribution is one point and up to three are acknowledged, or is there a gradient of excellency in which two or three points may be earned for a more excellent contribution?

Also curious if anyone has general insight for success with DeGeest, Hollander-Blumoff, or Drobak (Property). There has been some discussion in the applicants' thread in the past, but I imagine there are some here who didn't see those posts and could contribute.

For Hollander-Blumoff, just attend every class and do all the practice problems she assigns (I think there are 6 throughout the semester). Her exam looks very much like her practice problems, and you'll be rewarded for doing them, especially the optional ones. Freer is also helpful if you ever get confused.
