Last month, my desired firm mailed me an invitation to interview based on getting my grades in before the interview process started for the end of January. Just got the email saying that the firm just made its selections. No grades: No chance. Hoping to sooth my frustrations by assuring myself that my grades would not have mattered, ughh! Somehow venting doesn't help much.

I would email KD and forward him the email from that firm. Career services can help pressure student records to increase their turn around time and can help 'emcourage' profs to turn in their grades.

I think I would do this too. Donovan is really great, and even if nothing comes of it, I'm sure he would want to know that is happening. I agree with Bruce more generally -- there's no reason the school should give professors so long to turn in grades. Moving it up 10 days for 1Ls is a good start, but there's no need for UVA to be dragging up the rear.

There's really no reason for us to go all the way until the 21st and that last 3 day week of classes or whatever didn't feel particularly useful to me. If we ended on the 14th or so, profs would have 10 solid days to grade before the Christmas/new year's malaise sets in and then they can get done and cso could get them posted right after new year's.

The deadline for 1L grades was still Feb 1. So I waited: 4.5, 5.5, 6, and 6.5 weeks for my grades, dating from the date on which I took them. It was a joke.

^Emailing Donovan is a good suggestion, will do. I also emailed the firm just to see if it might hold the door open, but the interview pool for the 1 to (maybe) 2 1L slots is said to be set. In any case, I'm sure that the interviewees are incredible at this stage in the game, so the "what ifs?" are actually very unlikely.

6 fucking weeks? That's like 1.5 exams per day. How much time does it take to add up check marks?

The excuse I've heard is that the professors claim they deserve a vacation too and therefore many of them think it's perfectly fine to take all of winter break for themselves and then grade when they start spring semester. You'll note that spring semester grades are often completed faster because the professors know once they finish their summer begins.

LMAO and they say students are out of touch with the real world! Exactly how much of a break do they think they would get at comparably salaried jobs? What other job do you receive six figure pay and a "winter break" (one that lasts from Dec 21 until January 23rd at that--not even considering the fact that many of them don't administer the exams and don't stay to accept questions during the exam period!)?

I find the "refusal to answer questions once the exam period has started" to be very odd. Is this something that is common at other schools or in undergrad for people? I'd never heard of such a thing before.

I think that's just a couple of professors - I've only had 2 professors in law school that have imposed that rule.

Yeah, per Cary's email earlier last week, it seems like evals show up only after grades are available.

Of course I have nothing yet.

from word of mouth it seems as if the 7 am or 7 pm grade update on SIS has actually been concrete in terms of when grades are out. if so, then thats a much better system than the check for evals/find random grades on random times on SIS method in the past.

Oh I don't know, who didn't enjoy endlessly refreshing the course evaluation page and then the 4 hour lag time knowing that a grade would pop up soon?

My 1L year a huge number were posted the Tuesday after MLK day. I assume that a lot of professors will finish up over the weekend.

Maybe even later this year considering we ended almost a week later. But, I have a feeling most professors don't start grading until well after the New Year. It only takes a few days for them to grade once they start... hard part's getting them to start.

Perhaps they need to introduce performance related pay.

Looking at all the high ratings professors get, I still think each professor's evaluations should be curved against the rest of the faculty.

Yeah, a lot of schools impose financial penalties on professors who don't turn grades in on time. UVa won't ever adopt this though because of its generally lax attitude towards everything, plus it's something normally done at lower ranked schools.
