What I don't understand is that NU has a bigger endowment than Chicago, Penn, UVA, Georgetown, etc., yet seems functionally unable to control costs better than those schools. In many respects, it's much worse. Even our health insurance costs like $800 more per year than GULC's.
NU's plan has a richer benefit formula, i.e., if you get really sick, your out-of-pocket costs will be lower. NU caps your out-of-pocket at $1250. GULC caps it at $5k.

Penn's plan cost more than NU, btw.

They really could have covered more than the pullout method.

That's cool, D.Rod, don't bother to have the atrium reset for 2 days and counting. It's not like students need that space.

I don't have one, but I would assume it's a combination of good grades + being on top of mass mailing.

Ah, yeah, that is definitely very very helpful. Possibly necessary, IDK.

ETA: it seems like in-house positions are less focused on the whole 'must be a URM' thing. I know 2 people going to corporate/in-house jobs and they are both white males. ANECDOTAL EVIDENCE = PROOF 'MIRITE??

I think you need to have at least 3 if not 4 of the useful factors to have a decent shot:
  • Top Grades
  • Minority
  • Ties to a smaller market that hires 1L SAs.
  • Prestigious WE
  • Hard Science UG
Being on top of mass mailing is a given no matter what you have going for you.

I didn't really look into in-house stuff but I recommend that everyone who is interested in firms look at in-house for their 1L summer. I know several people who did in-house and loved it (at places like Microsoft, Google, Facebook, etc). I think it often requires more effort because nobody hands you a list of in-house jobs like NALP does for firms or the Arizona thing does for gov, but it is definitely worth it to look for and apply to in-house stuff.
