Hopefully a current student can weigh in for me. I'm trying to decide which hotel to stay at during Spring Law Day. It seems that the Courtyard (by Marriott) is both relatively close and on the Bloomington-Indy shuttle line. Is there another place that I should consider before booking there?

There is also the hotel in the Memorial Union. Although that might be more expensive. Check it out:

I'm just staying at a super-cheap place. The shuttle can take you to the student union, where you can catch buses to most places in Bloomington.

Thank you for the suggestion. Staying there might be a good way of "experiencing" the campus- although at a higher price, as you say.

Hampton Inn (on College) worked well for me. The Memorial Union would be fun. I've never stayed there -- but kickass building.

The best way to experience everything would probably just to stay with someone.

If all you're looking for is closeness, the Grant Street Inn is a little bed and breakfast that is within walking distance of the school. (I actually park across the alley from it on the Dunn St. side and walk every day.)

Just stay away from the Quality Inn. That place was so dirty I slept in my clothes.

Walking distance is a great idea, considering the law school gave out free beer at Nicks for ASD.

Speaking of which, when is ASD? I plan to get as much free booze as possible.

Nicks is the unofficial law school student place to drink. There's not too many undergrads there, no annoyingly loud music, not dirty, etc. Oh, and it's like 3 blocks from the law school.

Last year the school bought food and pitchers for the students on ASD, and invited a lot of the students to schmooze it up. Hence, walking distance is best, and driving is a poor idea. Also, you will have no idea where to park. I think I parked somewhere in the next county last year...

Via email exchange with IU admissions, they are "considering" giving stipends for ASW aka Spring Law Day. I think they're just going to pay for some people they really want, not everyone.

It never hurts to ask about stipends. Drexel's admissions office paid for my flight and hotel room when I asked if they had a deal with local hotels on prices. (For admitted students day.)

That's good. I am aware that stipends exist, but it seems the jury is still out whether or not IU is going to provide them this year. It has been shown this cycle that they have money to spare.

I'm just saying it NEVER hurts to ask. Maybe if enough people bug, IUB, they'll cough it up. They're certainly loose with the money right now since they basically did away with our scholarship requirements.

I have some questions regarding Non-trad. students. Is there any type of support group/point of contact that I could reach out to in order to discuss non-trad? Are there many non-trad that are married? What type of employment do their spouses have? Do those that are married live in bloomington or somewhere else (indy)? I realize the people ITT may not know but any help would be appreciated.

As I am on the trajectory to be married before I get my JD, I am interested in these questions as well. Particularly #2. When I visited ND and Cornell they both gave us the, "Lots of students SOs work at the school"-line. Same deal in Bloomington? Is IU the center of the world?

Bloomington is in the absolute middle of nowhere.

A lot of towns named after colors are nearby, though, if you're into that kind of thing. Greencastle, Greenfield, Greenwood, Greensburg, Brownsburg, Brownstown....

Thanks, dq! I don't know if I'm any older or wiser, but it would be great if someone could give us a hand finding her a decent job near Bloomington. If she had to go to Indy for a job, we could definitely split the difference on the commute (say, Martinsville) but that would certainly put a cramp in my style and take some of the fun out of law school.

Eh, no sense in withholding information for the sake of privacy at this point, my numbers have already outed me to any IUB admissions people and they apparently didn't care.

My fiancee and I have a year of non-competitive status for federal jobs from our current year of service with AmeriCorps. So she's hoping to capitalize on that wherever I end up.

Ive found there are a lot of olderish students. I know in my practice group I was the youngest member and the only one that came straight from undergrad. Most in my group were mid to late 20's. There are also a good majority of married or in serious relationship, students as well.

actually, with indy being such a short commute (and in a straight line basically) she could take advantage of the federal offices there. indy would have the full scope of feds that any major city is allotted. they just may not be as big as the same office in say chicago or DC.

Depends on your opinion of middle of nowhere. You can make it to Indy in 45-60 minutes, and lots of other cities are within 2-4 hours driving time. When I think of middle of nowhere, I think more of U of Iowa, which is an hour from Davenport, 2 hours from Des Moines and 4 hours from Chicago. Bloomington is relatively remote relative to other cities, but that's the situation for many, if not most, college towns.
