I don't think it's unnecessary for the first few weeks until you learn why you're briefing

You really don't need it. Torts is pretty simple, and he tells you exactly what he wants you to know. In your spare time do practice exams, and make yourself a really good one or two pager.

Wash U sent 1 person in '13 and '12 to Wisconsin. Granted some of that is self-selection, but I can't imagine it would be easy to make that leap. If you want to work in Wisconsin, Wisconsin might be a good place to start.

The firms in St. Louis are extremely selective. Only looking to hire like...5 people total. And there's always healthy competition coming from at least SLU and probably UMSL as well.

Assume top third at minimum, journal, and ties to Missouri for any of the St. Louis firms. Bonus points if diverse.

ETA: When i say top third at minimum, i really mean top 20% or higher. But probably top 10%.

I'm confused. I don't know if cuse meant UMSL as an undergrad institution (or law school?) or not but I agree with his overall point. St. Louis is picky as hell. Law firms are so damn insecure that you'll leave after a few years and go off to some more attractive place. If there was one point I would underscore in this thread, it's this: don't count on St. Louis, whether you're from MO, close to it in IL, or even St. Louis itself. They're finicky as hell. I know great people with great grades who've been shut out who are from here.

But yes i definitely agree with the poster above. Do not assume that St. Louis is in the bag (although i wouldn't blame anyone if they assumed this in the beginning). I actually really like a lot of the firms in St. Louis just based on doing callbacks with them as a 1L, but the reality is their model is completely different from the bigger cities. They're hiring single digit SA classes with the expectation or at least hope that most of them will stay throughout the duration of their careers.

I think the same goes for Chicago, but not cuz WashU isn't well-regarded but because Chicago is just a really difficult market to break into...even NU and UChicago students can't rely on it.

If you want BigLaw from WashU, you should be okay with potentially going to NYC or going back to your home market (assuming your home region has a decent legal market)

Yea, based on what I have heard, it is entirely possible we have more people going to big NYC firms than people going to big StL firms at this point, which kind of makes sense, but wasn't really what I expected.

And like everybody else said, you have to have the grades, but that goes with not being at a T14.

definitely agree that u need to have the grades. But no matter what i would strongly suggest networking/mass-mailing early no matter what your grades are. Especially for non-NYC markets. Take advantage of the Becker thing as much as you can. If you can start to narrow down your preferred region, firm, practice group, then CSO can start to match you up with older students/alumni earlier that will make it easier. Start looking at government positions for next summer like right now, the December 1st start-date only applies to law firms. It was frustrating to meet with Carol Vizzier in January only to learn that a ton of government deadlines had passed back in the fall.

If you're serious about staying in St. Louis or even Kansas City then work your ass off and get the best grades your fall term as you can, network with St. Louis firms this semester (go to those receptions/dinners..i think Husch has one in the fall), and have your resume/cover letter reviewed by CSO and at least a few 2L's and 3L's that you trust. Basically you should be putting yourself in the best position possible for 1L OCI. Most of the St. Louis firms (i think all of them minus Bryan Cave and Thompson Coburn) hire non-diversity 1L SA's and then try to invite them back to return as 2L's. Even if you strike out from 1L OCI you will have met attorneys that you can continue to keep in touch with and it'll make your pitch stronger when u go back to those firms for 2L OCI.

Getting a 1L summer position in St. Louis will also make your case stronger going into 2L OCI for the local firms.
