Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Hello all! I know the living questions have been asked to death, but I'd love to get a local's opinion to my price range, since I know nothing about the area. I'm looking for a place between GULC and GWU, that's also around 1,600-1,800 per month for a one bedroom. Is the feasible? Anyone have any recommendations as to where to start looking?

Not gonna happen. The only one bedrooms in that price range in that area are section 8 housing, I'd think. Unless you miraculously snatch an affordable dwelling unit in one of the luxury complexes in China town maybe.Anonnonnon wrote:Hello all! Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
CH being on the green and yellow line actually makes it kind of a pain to get to either, since you'll either need to switch lines or walk a ton. But the more serious problem is that the only thing you're likely find here in that price range will be dark, tiny english basements.Gray wrote:Maybe try columbia heights? It's not exactly between the two, but since it's on the yellow line it wouldn't be hard to get to either. There should be something in that price range around there! I saw a small 1BR for 1,600 ish last year (very small though).Anonnonnon wrote:Hello all! Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
I was super excited about curriculum B, until I read this thread.
Now, I'm worried it's perceived as sort of the section only for people interested in public interest and that it's a little odd.
I thought the "big picture" view would be more interesting than the nuanced view, but now I'm concerned that it's potentially a worse choice if I decide I want to go into big law. I don't know 100% now if I want to be in private or public interest, and honestly, I think my career will be a mix of both, it just depends what happens first. I have a background in engineering and am interested in topics around technology law and policy.
Would appreciate any advice, and sooner is better given I need to email them to switch sections asap! thanks!

It doesn't matter and nobody cares. The differences and effects of Being Section 3 vs. another section is equivalent to the effect of your softs on law school applications - any effects are extremely marginal compared to vastly more important factors (for hiring it's your GPA and what school you go to).gjs13 wrote:I was super excited about curriculum B, until I read this thread.

Haha I'm assuming you got pretty lucky with your living situation then - but would you mind telling me how you got lucky?Gray wrote:Sup.Hand wrote:Unless you miraculously snatch an affordable dwelling unit
I figured this might be the case. Do you know where I'd have to start looking to find apartments in that price range (that weren't shit, but were also within commutable distance to each school?)Hand wrote:CH being on the green and yellow line actually makes it kind of a pain to get to either, since you'll either need to switch lines or walk a ton. That would be cool actually, but I'm planning on living in DC with my SO

I live on the orange line which goes to foggy bottom and I take the bus, walk on nice days, or ride my bike to school. Takes me a half hour by bus or a 45 minute walk or so. A cheap 1br in my neighborhood is probably on the high end of your budget. Pm me if you want more info
I also live with my SO and we recently renewed the lease on our studio because it's cheap and enough room for two people.

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Hi All!
I'm interested in potentially attending GULC due to its location in DC, as I'm interested in doing government work after school. Can anyone speak to the successes or difficulties GULC students have in finding LRAP qualified government work in DC? How do students who focus on government work compare to their big-law counterparts?

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
One of the main problems with finding a government gig that qualifies for LRAP is that government attorneys get paid too much to qualify for LRAP, because LRAP covers your loan payments only when you make less than 75K (although it technically pays a diminishing amount after that, you'll in practice probably get nothing when you make more than 75K), and with the proposed raise for gov't employees currently being considered, even GS-12 step 1 would put you at that number, I believe.PDX4343 wrote:Hi All!

As to your second question, there are a lot of students here explicitly looking to work in government, and the school probably provides more resources for them than you'd find at any other law school (including career advisors who specialize in helping students find gov't jobs, and a counterpart to OCI for paid 2L summer jobs in gov't).

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Just got my section assignment - Section 5...
Is there a textbook list assignment per professor that I could get before orientation? Will the ASW site have that information posted closer to the semester?
Thanks
(Also, why are there 2 professors for LRW on Tuesday/Thursday, and 3 professors for Con Law 1 - Sneider, Bloch, and Seidman? Something I'm missing here?)

Information about text books will be available a couple of weeks before classes begin through the curriculum website

Section 5 is a smaller section? And due to its size we have to have multiple profs? I'm confused.

For some classes, you won't be with your entire section, but only with a subset (about 30-ish instead of all 100+).Ar40 wrote:??Hand wrote:Because you wine assigned to a small section with one of those profs for those courses.Ar40 wrote:Just got my section assignment - Section 5...

Ah, OK. And is that normal across all the sections? Or is that unique to section 5?
I can understand LRW being split up into smaller sections, but Con Law 1? I don't understand how/why a major course would be subdivided like that. Seems confusing and awkward to have 3 profs for the same subject.
Seems like all 3 profs are in the same classroom too. Tuesday/Thursday morning we have Snyder. Bloch and Seidman take turns in the afternoons on Tuesdays and Thursdays.

It's so that you ~connect~ more with one of your profs they also invite you to their house for dinner and shit

Ah, so that's standard procedure for the entirety of GULC.buckiguy_sucks wrote:It's so that you ~connect~ more with one of your profs they also invite you to their house for dinner and shit
Well, at least it's only in Con Law 1 and LRW.
I hope they don't give 3 separate exams in Con Law 1 because of this... And I hope each prof is in sync with the other ones so there isn't too much overlap, etc.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
