Just as a different perspective... I do not think they give me too much money (I also don't think they give me too little). I seem to have no problem spending all of it each quarter, although I came without any savings and I'm terrible at sticking to a budget. That being said, I do live alone, so I pay a few hundred dollars more a month in rent, I support my two kitties, and I enjoy shopping. I also don't have any real travel expenses, because I'm from the Chicago area originally, but I also don't pay for parking for my car.

Do any of your classes have teaching assistants? If so, do you know if they are advanced law students or if they are grad students?

No TAs. Our legal writing professors are taught by aspiring professors on a 2 year fellowship program, but that is as close as you would get to a TA. If you have questions or need help with something the professors are incredibly generous with their time, especially around finals.

1. Varies lots. New grad sucks from what I hear (no kitchens in the rooms). The university apartments range from ultra crappy to kind of nice. You should look at the different buildings before you choose one.
2. Pretty nice.
3. Not much unless you try pretty hard (go to grad mixers, etc)
4. Just helpful, if you live in Hyde Park.
5. Almost 0, unless you are a URM or have connections. Big firms don't hire 1Ls anymore, no matter what school you are from. Some change at smaller firms though.
6. Law school is hard. Make sure it's what you really want to do before you commit.

There are a few 1L firm jobs if you are a patent law person too, but mostly it is through hookups or diversity hiring.

Wow thanks for the impressive maps. That sucks about the PHD student, but it sounds like the area in general is pretty dangerous. The last paragraph references two other crimes, both of which included guns and both of which happened in the same day.

The street the law school is on to about 15 blocks north of it is perfectly safe. Lots of police/security/etc, especially since they just opened a new freshman dorm right by the law school last year. However, just two blocks south of the law school becomes quite unsafe. Fortunately, there's absolutely no reason to go there in every day life.

Why are you considering buying an apartment anyway?? Are you really THAT sure you want to stay on the south side for years to come? Doesn't really make sense to buy if you're only sticking around for 3 years max.

She does. I think there's a 1L elective she occasionally teaches. Anyway you can see that info on the Chi website.

I'm not sure what the cycle is, but every few years she teaches a 1L Spring quarter elective on Feminist Philosophy (lastly in Spring 2010). Other than that, you can go onto the Chicago Law website to see the courses offered or just go to her faculty page. It's pretty easy to google.

I remember it being one of the choices for the 2010 ASW observing classes. I might be misremembering though.

You're graded on a separate curve. I don't think it's a big deal.

I have taken a class with Nussbaum. I actually thought she was a pretty good teacher. Her personality/persona, though...well.....let's just say you're sure to hear many, many stories about her before you ever have the chance to take a class with her

You have to be graded on a separate curve from at least the 3Ls - they get their grades long before 1Ls do.

I was hoping to be in a class with 3Ls suffering from "senioritis"
