Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Speaking of write on, can any upper classmen shed light on (i) how many students in total take part in the write on, and/or (ii) how many apply for main journal?

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
I don't know how many apply for Main Journal, but from the number of judges each journal provided plus the number of assignments I got, I'd estimate around 400+ people do write-on (I had a little over 20 to judge, and there were at least 2-3 graders from each journal, so 400 is pretty conservative).Hand wrote:Speaking of write on, can any upper classmen shed light on (i) how many students in total take part in the write on, and/or (ii) how many apply for main journal?

ETA so with 3 graders per journal, 13 journals, and 20 notes per grader, that's only 260 students doing write on
ETA assuming that not everyone ranks main journal first, that actually gives me better odds than I'd have thought

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Forgot about that. Looking back it looks like I got 24 assignments and there were 3 judges from my journal. 24 * 3 judges per journal * 11 journals of any size (1 is very new and I'm assuming at least one of the tiny journals doesn't send people) / 3 (everything getting judged three times) = 264.Hand wrote:everything gets graded by 3 judges thoughCapitol_Idea wrote:I don't know how many apply for Main Journal, but from the number of judges each journal provided plus the number of assignments I got, I'd estimate around 400+ people do write-on (I had a little over 20 to judge, and there were at least 2-3 graders from each journal, so 400 is pretty conservative).Hand wrote:Speaking of write on, can any upper classmen shed light on (i) how many students in total take part in the write on, and/or (ii) how many apply for main journal?

That seems very low. Possibly main journal or other larger journals sent more judges but then I don't think it would still get over 300. Curious.

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
I assume that a good number of people don't bother to begin with, some give up once they open up a packet with 400 pages of shit on something they don't care about, and then there may also be some who haven't heard about this whole journal thing (to wit: a dude in my section told me, when I asked him whether he was going to do EIW when we were drinking after our last exam, that he had only learned that day that EIW existed). 300 would actually be roughly what I expect.Gray wrote:On the other hand this stuff is boring AF and there have got to be a bunch of people who can't be bothered.Capitol_Idea wrote: That seems very low. Definitely sure its less than 400, could believe its like 300 - so many people are doing fun things this week and have said they are not journaling because (1) guaranteed job (2) dgaf (3) previous PI related work experience so..

Yeah good luck. But 1L hiring seems to be ramped up now at the big firms, so maybe it'll be more of a thing.EzraFitz wrote:Submitted packets ends up being about 275.

What if there are multiple references to "The Wire" throughout the note? Would this be +5, -5, or something else depending on the grader?Capitol_Idea wrote:If someone had just prefaced their submission with those words I would've bumped it up 5 points easy.buckiguy_sucks wrote:i am truly sorry if any of you are grading write on and have to read this

Is there a PDF somewhere listing the firms that participate in OCI at GULC?

Not that's publicly available (that I'm aware of) - but you get the list ahead of time before OCI (as well as lists of firms that have hired from GULC and/or been to OCI in the past).gazorpazorp wrote:Is there a PDF somewhere listing the firms that participate in OCI at GULC?
Most of the AmLaw 100 are there, and it seemed like some of the bigger regional AmLaw 200 firms are there as well. Firms that are well represented in DC/NY are present, and I *think* there might be decent representation for Philly, Chicago and West Coast offices of said firms but I can't speak to that personally bc I only targeted DC.

Don't forget all the write on packets from our illustrious 120+ transfers. Considering what a crapshoot OCI is for transfers and the fact that the only valid reason to transfer and pay sticker is for OCI, I assume most all transfers who get accepted in time will be doing write on, thus diluting the applicant pool by a buttload.

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Expecting to make a final decision between GULC & Michigan by the end of the week... so pretty soon I'll be able to quit bugging you guys with my ridiculous, anxiety-laden (and often unanswerable) questions
In the meantime: with regards to GULC's employment #'s, do you guys think there's any merit to this poster's "findings?"
http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 1&t=262951
TLDR: Full-time, Curriculum A students landed in BigLaw/federal clerkships at a 56.5% rate. Transfers & Curriculum B students brought down the employment numbers big time.
I'm currently trying to decide if Michigan is worth an extra $42,000 in projected debt. Just looking at the overall numbers, I'm inclined to say yes. But that thread did give me pause.

Re: GULC Students Taking Questions
Hi everyone! 0L here hoping to get some help on off-campus housing nearby.
I read some posts on this thread about nearby complexes such as 77H, Mass Court, 425 Mass, and Senate Square, but these are all quite pricey. Anyone have any insights into some of the cheaper complexes such as Capitol Plaza and Carmel Plaza? Is there a reason they are not recommended by current students?
