I have been awake since 7:00am yesterday (when I woke up to take our Crim Law final) trying to figure out wtf is going on in Wood's class. I think I probably waited too long to start outlining. I almost decided to go to sleep but then I realized that my outline + notes for her 1 quarter of civ pro are longer than my 2 quarters of notes for either Contracts or Crim Law. I really don't care what I get on the final tomorrow - I am just ready for this shit to be done.

lol damn. I'm probably pulling an all-nighter but I did get up at like noon today in anticipation of that likely outcome

Hey man, I'm almost done with my civ pro outline. That I started at about noon today.

Ferzan at least offered the entertainment value of watching a train wreck. Wood is more akin to watching women's soccer, or Cloud Atlas (good luck staying awake + figuring out what's going on).

That's very true. I enjoyed watching more and more of the class turn on her. Would really like to read her reviews.

How competitive/difficult is it to get unpaid jobs for 1L summer in either public defender's offices or USAO? If anyone can offer any info about offices in Chicago or Boston specifically that would be great! Thanks

It's really hard to tell since there really is no transparency in the process. Your best bet is to probably e-mail people on the WWW list who worked in positions that you are interested in, but even they may not know. I know there are 3 Chicago 1Ls at the Chicago USAO this summer, and many at other offices around the country. Idk anything about Boston though.

We have a lot of people who do both and get the positions relatively early in the winter so it can't be too grade focused. Can't really speak to Boston since there aren't so many 1Ls who self select into PI there, but I imagine you will be fine.

I think LRW and the elective grade come out earlier but I don't remember exactly.

Anybody have any input on this Corporate Lab Transactional Challenge? Is it useful? Interesting? What do you do for it anyway?

If you plan to pitch anything related to transactional work during OCI, I highly recommend doing it. Super low impact (each assignment is 1-3 hours in length; one per week for three weeks). It's also actual work you would do as a junior -- diligence memorandum, contract analysis, contract drafting -- so you might as well find out early if you like that or not. Most interviewers don't know a ton about it, so you can dress it up however you want. For what it's worth, almost every law firm I interviewed with brought it up at least once (often out of sheer curiosity), and I got the sense that being able to say I was a finalist (and sound enthusiastic about the kind of assignments the contest involved) was a benefit.

It's a pretty low time commitment so that may justify it.

I didn't actually talk about it in a single interview. If you can otherwise pull through a solid narrative about why you want to do deal work, I don't know if I'd really put in the effort, but it can't hurt.

Oh man... the writing competition. I still don't know why I ever actually signed up for that thing because I knew I wasn't going to bother. Every time I get one of those emails with all of the extremely neurotic questions, I am tempted to ask a question like, "If we finish the assignment early, are we allowed to turn it in now?" so it gets sent to everyone with the response.

I am also tempted to draw a picture of a cat in MS Paint and submit it for my entry, just to keep it professional.

Please do this. Please.
