I seriously doubt that will be the case. If anything the percentage who leave will probably keep going up. The lack of recruiters isn't specific to Indiana by any means.

Yeah, 0L's should really be taking this all with a grain of salt. ITE, every school is striking out. I heard WUSTL was absolutely brutalized this year in OCI.

Keep in mind, Indiana does have a vast alumni network especially in California with groups like the Hollywood Hoosiers. So, if the economy recovers, I would assume 0L's should be in better positions than we 1L's will be in.

It's not stuck.

Just one question. How do all you apps think the job market is right now? I came in fully knowing it's not good. Hell, the main reason I decided to really study for the LSAT's was that WSJ article a few years back (when the sector was booming). It's a very competitive market, and it has been even before the market dropped.

That's one of the reasons applications are up, because people are taking shelter in law school for 3 years. It looks like the market has been going up (as opposed to down), but plenty of things are planned out months and months ahead. For instance, OCI, which is in the Fall, was cut back by many places at the beginning of the year.

This is a problem everywhere, and it looks like the class of 2008 got fired, 2009 got deferred, and 2010 doesn't get hired. That is by no means a sum up of Indiana, it is a sum up of most all law schools. I know a guy who finished top 5 (not percent, I think he was number 3 in his class) at my undergrads law school, and as class of 2008 had the $160K job for about 6 months before they fired him.

If you want to go to law school because you are looking for six figures, it far from guaranteed, and you are getting into this for all the wrong reasons. Personally, I wasn't going to not do something I have wanted to do for a decade because when I get out the market won't be as good as I want it to be. I think some of you should really do some research on this problem. Check out abovethelaw.com (who do a layoff report every weekend). This is also one of the reasons Indiana is a good landing place, because they are giving out very large scholarships, while other schools are cutting back on student expenditures. There are too many people with $150,000 debt coming out of school who can't find a job.

Sorry, you caught us in the middle of an OCI thing.

1. Yes, there are a good handful. Try not having a child during your first year. I have no idea how those people did it.

2. Depends on where you live. If you are close to the school, there's not a big need. The bus goes to a lot of places around town. Parking is not good, but you can rent a spot/move your car every few hours/stay at the lots until 9 PM. I have a car, but I only drive occasionally. It's certainly not required here.

Yes, we have no IKEA. Indiana did a great study, and found that as soon as an IKEA is introduced into an area, violent crimes against persons increase dramatically. I am confident it is because everything they make is so damn difficult to put together.

There are a few local places that sell furniture, but I finished off my apartment through craigslist, and some ridiculously cheap stuff from Walmart and Target.

Cars certainly aren't required, especially during your first year of law school. I had a car and rarely, used it, except for traveling outside of the city, or for going to the store to stock up every couple weeks. To be sure, there are places in Bloomington that are inaccessible without a car, but you'll get by just fine without one. Particularly if you're keen on busses (I never stepped foot on one.)

Just keep in mind, Bloomington is the epitome of a college town. Its set up to cater to undergrad students, many of whom by default do not have cars.

And there are definitely a good number of married people. I think the school intentionally recruits a certain number of older, more family oriented people in order to provide a core stability to the law school. In fact, I know they do this because I recall them hinting at it way back at orientation. Apparently they had some concerns/problems with the law school environment before I got there. A few too many people getting public intoxes I believe.

Whatever that problem was, it had been fixed while I was there.

Oh, and there are a surprising number of Mormons there...

Booked my airfare and hotel this morning for my trip to Bloomington. I'll be there during the Super Bowl. Any suggestions as to where to watch the big game with my dad and fiancee?

Yogi's is the best football bar I have found in Bloomington. It's not an undergrad handout (and is therefore, not dirty), and it's pretty well priced with some good food. Lots of TV's.

I wonder what they would be doing here if Indy makes it. Could change the entire plan...

To clarify:

1. I'm not saying that you will be stuck in Indiana if you graduate from IUB (though there is a good chance you will graduate unemployed or underemployed).

2. I'm not saying that the job probem is specific to IU. Other schools in our range such as WUSTL, Emory, Wisconsin, Illinois, etc. are suffering just as much.

3. I AM saying that it might be a good idea to go to a school in or near the market that you want to work, since there is a good chance you will have to rely on networking, as it is likely you will strike out at OCI ITE.

4. I hope that you all have a plentiful scholarship and are not going to be paying sticker for IU.

Not too big of an "if" at this point either, I'd say.

Yogi's is a good choice. They have big TVs, and much better food and service than BuffaLouie's. I prefer Nick's for atmosphere, but the viewing wouldn't be as good there.

The wings at BuffaLouie's are better.

I was there when Chicago played Indy back in Superbowl whatever. It was actually pretty exciting, because there are a substantial number of Bears supporters in Bloomington. Pretty much heard cheers all night long and there were little (playful) skirmishes throughout the town. All the sports bars were packed, but thats not really too uncommon for major sports events. A lot of people go to Kilroy's Sports, but thats very much a college scene bar and usually standing room only. Someone mentioned Yogi's (10th street and Indiana), which is nice, but also very much a college scene, albeit more sophisticated/less obnoxious. Buffalouie's is ok, its like a smaller cheaper version of Yogi's, but it attracts a similar type of college driven crew - it's almost directly across from the law school.

Personally, I always enjoyed watching football at Coach's (on College)... its much more relaxed than any of the other places and it has tons of TVs. Of course, you might want to look into places out of walking range for most students. There's a Buffalo Wild Wings on 2nd west of the city center. That might be your best bet actually... depending on what you want. Yogi's will give you the best 'taste' of Bloomington though... Heck, you could always get dinner at Nick's and watch it there. Law students spend a ton of time there. I know I spend easily more time there than the law library 1L year. By like a ratio of 3 to 1. This was all before I discovered the beauty that is Jake's on Thursday nights.

I guess I'm meandering now because I really don't know what kind of place you're looking for. So, what kind of place are you looking for?

But no, the wings at Buffalouie's really aren't good at all... Bloomington has by far the best pizza per capita of any place I've ever lived. Wings? Not so much.

I think BuffaLouie's service is just terrible...slow and rude (it was the owner who was rude to one of my friends, rather than just some low-paid minimum wage worker, so it made it hard to want to support his place...although he was personally friendly to me). I've gone there for NFL Sunday Ticket reasons anyway, but that was before I knew that Nick's had that also. I'm not a big wing guy at all, so I won't really weigh in on that.

On the pizza front, I've only had Mother Bear's and Aver's here in Bloomington...any other recommendations?

Closest IKEA is 3 hours east - probably worth it for me. My parents and fiancee are IKEA freaks. I like cheap stuff, too.

So, Professor Geyh is the latest to pass the buck to the recorder.

I certainly hope that means that we'll see some kind of news by the end of the week.

I've heard some people say professors turned in grades like a week ago, then another say that the recorders have gotten no grades. Wouldn't make sense with LRW.

I would like to point out that it has been 6 weeks since we took contracts. This fucking sucks. No grades and a bad writing sample is a hell of a way to try and get a job.

It is pretty ridiculous. I assume that those of you with crim law grades were writing full essays and not using scantrons or anything...and that exam got back to you in less than a month, it seems like. I don't understand what the hold-up with contracts is. I'm a little more forgiving with Hoffmann and his crim classes with all of the grading he has/had to do, though I'll officially be impatient with the whole lot of them by the end of the week.

Not quite. It was half scantron, half essay. Classic issue spotter with a ghastly 700 word minimum. Not sure how "in depth" his grading was. Heard very mixed things, and I have talked to a number of very smart people who study their faces off, and all the grades came up at B+. But I dunno.

However, the test was a week after contracts. And came out like 10 days ago. I dunno what the hold up is, but the natives are getting restless.

Bradley or Scott? And how do you enforce a 700 word minimum?

Sorry, I was listening to that LP audio while reading over conlaw and typing (no, I have learned nothing from any of it, and I will not blame it on my inability to comprehend three things at once).

It was a 700 word maximum for Bradley. Most that time was spent trying to figure out how to remove a few hundred words and fit all the issues.
