Is there a Penn 1L who doesn't mind me going with them to a class on Monday? Penn Law won't let me sit in a class unless I've been accepted or I go with a 1L I know.

Also, what are some decent places to eat at around Penn?

I'm not a 1L, but if either of you want to sit in on non-1L classes (Monday would be church and state with prof. Gordon at 3pm and Friday would be Corporations with Skeel) let me know. Hopefully a 1L will respond instead of just me

As far as places to eat, I try not to spend too much on lunch, so don't know too much about the nice places, but I am a big fan of a Mediterranean-ish vegetarian food cart called Magic Carpet. It's parked at 34th and Walnut right by the law school. There's also a food court with general fast food, a Dunkin Donuts, a Pretzel joint etc.

As far as proper restaurants, there's a few outside our Sansom Street entrance that law students seem to frequent - Bubble something(??), White Dog Cafe, Mad Mex etc. I haven't been blown away by any of them, but they're all decent, I think.

The class is at noon on Friday (until 1:15).

Full disclosure: The class is terribly boring (imo) and won't give you an idea of 1L since he doesn't cold call (only takes volunteers and rambles A LOT).

So I didn't read the entire thread (most of it) but I had a question regarding transferring. I tanked really hard on the LSAT (160) and have been taking 19 credits each semester to finish, including supporting my wife and two little boys, so no time to take the December test. I have been accepted to two top 50 schools, two others ranked in the 70's and one third tier (Idaho) which I applied to because of their Indian Law program, and I'm from Idaho.
I want to be in the pacific northwest anywhere from San Fran/Sacramento up to Seattle.
Where do you think I need to be to have a realistic, or at least fighting chance to transfer to Penn after first year, and will it matter which of those schools I attend?
In the interest of full disclosure, I would be happy to attend any of those schools for three years and am not worried about postering to give myself an opportunity at Penn and then getting stuck. Penn just has so many amazing opportunities and I love Philly, a lot.
Also, I have heard there is no financial aid for transfer students. Is this true? And if so, how on earth does a person pay for that beautiful education?

Hi all, I'm a 1L. I'll start checking this thread again and you can feel free to PM me with any questions.

How is the gym at Penn and how far is it from the law school?

I'm really late coming in to this, but the gym has a shit ton of stuff. Pool, weight room, cardio machines. Rock climbing wall, golf simulator, group classes and yoga are extra, but they're cheap compared to other stuff in the area. It's about 3 blocks away from law school, super easy to get to.

Also, what are some decent places to eat at around Penn?

I know this is too late for you, but for places to eat, there are a ton of decent food trucks -- Magic Carpet is the most popular by far, but there's a couple of tasty Asian trucks behind the gym (Sansom between 37th and 38th), and Tacos Don Memo on 38th St rocks. But you might want to avoid them if you're VERY squeamish about sanitation issues.

The nearby sit-down restaurants are pretty hit or miss. New Deck Tavern across the law school has good American comfort food and super cheap appetizers for happy hour (5-7). Mad Mex is kinda bland but good for drinks; on the other hand, they do have some pretty generous lunch specials. Bubble House is overrated. I've never eaten at La Terasse/White Dog; both seem over priced and not very interesting. Sang Kee Noodle House in the Sheraton at 36th + Chestnut serves okay Chinese food -- more the "Chinese Chinese" kind than the "American Chinese" kind.

I think you should post this in the transfer student forum. It appears that most of the Penn students from this thread aren't transfer students. I know a transfer student from a T30 school, but I have no idea what his or her class rank was and I would NEVER ask.

Professors Yoo, Coglianese, and Johnston don't allow laptops from my experience (Johnston will allow them for non 1L classes if you convince him, but he won't be here after this semester )

I know Wolfe doesn't allow them. I feel like there are a few others out there but I dont remember who...

I don't really know transfer stuff (I'm Penn all the way). My boyfriend transferred though and he said "go to the best school you can." So I guess that's the advice I'll go with. The better the school you start at, the easier it will be to transfer.

Professor Wax allows laptops in her real Civ Pro class - maybe she just didn't want anyone using them at ASW. She is definitely one of the best professors here, but can be intimidating at first.

I only had 1/8 classes with a no laptop policy. I think the other sections had a few professors with that policy, but it's not standard at all. It's not something to worry about.

Makes sense she would do that for ASW since there's no need for a computer for any of the panels, etc. When the materials for the mock class were e-mailed, we were just told to be sure to bring hard copies to class since she didn't allow laptops. Thanks for clarifying that it isn't her usual policy. And yes, she was pretty intimidating

Just wanted to make sure most professors weren't anti-laptops before I consider investing in a little netbook to carry around to class.
