In my 3 years it's been generally the same. But then again, I haven't been paying too close attention which is why I'm taking it my 4E yearJustHawkin wrote:I think same classes, different profs. It's always 3 sections of something that's basically International Law and 3 sections of what's basically Admin Law. Professors change every year, and some of them prefer to give the course a different name. But if you're taking "Congress and the Regulatory State," you're taking admin law.

Heinzerling taught 1Ls in 2011. I was in her class.BmoreOrLess wrote:I don't *think* so, but I'm not sure and others can chime in. I do know this is the first time Heinzerling taught 1L's.

Re: Bored GULC 3L Taking Questions
For your elective, I'd recommend something that will be beneficial groundwork going forward. If you're interested in code-based courses, (Enviro, Labor, Health, many other topics), do Admin or Reg State, I-law would be good to have for...I-law like courses, and it's even a prereq. for some, so it's useful in terms of 2L schedule flexibility if you have it out of the way. You're not escaping gunners in 1L, don't make your decision based on that.

Any class selection advice for 2L year? Especially for trying to boost the GPA?

Heinzerling's 2014 Spring 1L exam was basically the basis of my attack outline haha. And ^^ seconded, I'm at a complete loss for second year courses.

Re: Bored GULC 3L Taking Questions
2L should include more foundational/prereq classes (evidence and corporations are both good, as well as white collar crime by O'Sullivan). You might also want to get your degree required classes out of the way: PR and a writing requirement class.JustHawkin wrote:Any class selection advice for 2L year? GPA really shouldn't matter at this point, but seminars are good for this. One credit weekend classes are almost guaranteed A's, but 2 credit courses often carry 3 credit workloads and sometimes a similar curve. Practicum courses usually have a fieldwork component - so while they require a lot of your time they are also an easy A. Hth.

Re: Bored GULC 3L Taking Questions
Can't stress this enough. Don't ever take a 2 credit course. They're just as much work as 3 or 4 credit classes. And especially don't take a 2 credit paper class that doesn't fulfill the writing requirement. Dumbest thing I did in law school.zacharus85 wrote: GPA really shouldn't matter at this point, but seminars are good for this. Any easier 4 credit classes? I think my plan is to take Corps and Fed Tax, so I don't want to kill myself with more substantive classes, but I really only want to take 12 credits this fall.

Any thoughts on GULC vs Cornell for Federal Government jobs or DC big law?

Thoughts on interning somewhere second semester of 1L? Focusing on grades vs. getting in on some DC work experience before the hordes descend for the summer...
I realize I am approximately 37 steps ahead of myself, but part of the appeal of GULC was ALL THE GOVERNMENT INTERNSHIPS.

Re: Bored GULC 3L Taking Questions
Don't do that. I don't even know if you can do that, at least officially. Your 1L grades are, by a significant margin, the most important part of law school. For most students, 1L grades almost by themselves will determine the employment options that are available when you're starting your career. 1L grades are everything, don't do anything that would take away time that you would otherwise use to improve them.Triangle wrote:Thoughts on interning somewhere second semester of 1L? Spend 1L studying, and you can always intern 2L and 3L (and get school credit for it, at that). But if you tank 1L because you're trying to juggle too much stuff, no amount of grade improvement in your 2L and 3L years will make up for that.

And don't lull yourself to sleep thinking first semester isn't that bad so you start thinking that you could do an internship. First semester won't be that bad. The extra class combined with the ramped up speed of LRW and extra mock trial/moot court/ADR crap makes second semester much worse.

Re: Bored GULC 3L Taking Questions
Can someone comment on the likelihood of getting the classes you want with this whole complicated ranking system. I have a schedule I'd be happy with if I got all my first choices, but if one of the pieces to the puzzle falls out, it feels like the whole things falls out.

Re: Bored GULC 3L Taking Questions
I never had a class I wanted that I didn't get into, but I only took enormous lectures (evidence/tax/corp) or really unpopular niche classes, so dunno if that's common. I think to get snubbed is rare if you're paying attention to the statistics they give about past years and ranking appropriately. Those are really helpful.JustHawkin wrote:Can someone comment on the likelihood of getting the classes you want with this whole complicated ranking system. If you're the type of person who read the description of the 14th Amendment seminar and thought it sounded like a good idea, then you will like the 14th Amendment seminar. Convenient self-selection there.POTUSorSCOTUS wrote: Fall - M&A, Securities Reg, 14th Amendment seminar
Spring - Drafting and Negotiating Real Estate Documents, Land Use Law, and Remedies - maybe Intro to Capital Markets
I don't know anything about the rest of those classes, sorry.

is there any area of law that has a reputation for not attracting gunners?

Hey thanks for putting in the time to address our questions. Anyway I am curious as to what you scored on the LSAT and what your GPA was before entering GULC.

Re: Bored GULC 3L Taking Questions
You send your resume to every firm recruiter email address you can get your hands on, and every Symplicity post there is, on the very first day that OCS tells you you're allowed to do so (some time in December). You won't even have grades at that point, but you can send those along in mid-late January when they're released.buckiguy_sucks wrote:How do 1L (big law) SAs work if most people are getting SA's through OCI?
Mostly though, the answer is they don't. 1L biglaw SAs are unicorn jobs.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
Now there's a charge.
