Provenzano is the best teacher I've ever had. Seriously. Amazing. I didn't plan on loving employment discrimination, and now it's my summer job. She's actually trained in teaching methods, and she's very engaging and energetic in class. People did very well in her class as far as I know, but she does expect you to keep up- very keen on in-depth participation, but not to the point of being mean.Flips88 wrote:Ok, so any opinions on the class experience/grade friendliness of the following profs for classes:

Thoughts on choosing a concentration? Is it worth it to confine courses/jump through the hoops? Will following the Civil Lit concentration actually help me professionally? Or just more pain than it's worth?

If you're a 2L interested in Big Law, getting a summer firm job during OCI will help you professionally.homestyle28 wrote:Thoughts on choosing a concentration? It's also a pain. But worth it in retrospect. I don't know if other T14's have that concentration thing, but I can't think of a more useless NU-related endeavor offhand.homestyle28 wrote:Thank you for addressing my concerns directly and succinctly. Well there's currently some turnover in the office. The head guy, Bill Chamberlain, left about a month ago to go head up career services at Depaul. And then one of the other advisors, Puja, has been on maternity leave. I've had the only advisor who has been consistently available (Dave Diamond) and I've found him super helpful and approachable. He's been there a while and gets nothing but rave reviews from attorneys who went to NU and had him.kennethellenparcell wrote:How well do you guys feel supported by Career Services? Anyone have Haddock? I've heard mixed messages - some say he's an easy grader, some say he's a hard grader

Re: Northwestern 3Ls Taking Questions and Challenges
Hi there,
NU is one of my top choices, but I have a few questions I hope you can help shed light on.
1. With respect to Biglaw recruiting, are students with paralegal experience disadvantaged at all compared to those with ibanking/consulting experience?
2. I will have 2 years WE in NYC when I enter law school and would like to return to NYC after. Is NU's relatively minor placement in NYC mostly the result of self-selection? Is there any major disadvantage to NU if I'm set on NYC biglaw?
3. Would you recommend paying sticker for NU?
Thanks for any insights you can provide!

I wouldn't say NU's placement into NYC is minor. Last year, NU students took the bar exam 16% NY/39% IL. U Chicago was around 12% NY/38% IL. This just reflects the fact that Chicago is a big local market and people want to stay there. The only schools that place substantially more into NYC are the ones where NYC is their target market: Cornell, Penn, and of course Columbia and NYU.

Incredibly terrible lecturer, very opaque grading system, bizarre testing methods, and did not follow his own syllabus. Also hard grader. Highly recommend that you not take his class.rayiner wrote:Moderate-hard grader.UncleFilz wrote:Anyone have Haddock? Re: Northwestern 3Ls Taking Questions and Challenges
Apparently, there is something at NU called the Summer Law Preparatory Program. It runs the week before orientation and appears to be distinct from those Law Preview things. Does anyone know anything about this program? On a scale of 1 to an asshole on my elbow, how useful is this?
It's free thanks to SNR Denton (what happened to them, btw?), but I would have to quit work a week earlier than planned. I'm leaning towards not attending, as the money seems more useful, but wanted to make sure I'm not missing out on something actually worthwhile.

Re: Northwestern 3Ls Taking Questions and Challenges
I didn't attend, and I just looked at the website, seems like working would be a far better use of your time. This is especially true because once you get here NU will make you sit through various things to introduce you to law school (Portal, Apex, etc...) I think you're fine skipping it.Samara wrote:Apparently, there is something at NU called the Summer Law Preparatory Program.
