Take this with a grain of salt (because I've never had her) but I haven't heard good things either.

As an aside, can any 1Ls confirm the story floating around about the guy who's really high up in the class pulling out a smartphone and passing his grades around a class? Please tell me that this has been exaggerated because if not...wow. That's one way of getting a reputation.

I hadn't even heard this, so I would guess exaggeration. The guys in my section who did well first semester are not exactly secretive about it, but none of them openly flaunt it either.

I'm not a 1L, but I've heard the story, too. Apparently the guy is a real piece of work (and doesn't yet have a job for the summer -- hard to see why with people skills like that).

Note to self: Wherever I attend, keep my mouth shut about grades.

Thank God there's a world-famous Korean violinist with my name that provides like 10000 pages of protection under Google search

I have some guy who sells cars in Rochester, NY, and then a bunch of people that died in the 1800s or something.

I think I'm good!

Now that I know who this is, I can say with relative certainty that he did not pass his phone around any class showing his grades. I am in all of his classes, and sit by him in most.

He may have been a little over-zealous in his excitement over his grades, but he was in no way showing off his cali's or anything. He just told people we go out with about his grades when they first got back and word got around. I don't fault the dude for being unable to contain his excitement about getting a 100 from a prof who has never given out a 100 since grade distributions first started to get tracked.

He is a genuinely good guy, and I think people just get pissed at him because he goes out more than almost anybody else but still destroyed finals.

ETA: also, it's kind of fucked up to be airing his "google problems" on here.

This makes me smile. I love when people assume having fun on the weekends (or Thursdays or whenever) precludes you from getting good grades. Locking yourself in the library in September doesn't do much come finals.

sublime12089 wrote: Btw, does the grading seem as bad as it seems? I have heard a few people, like you seem to be doing, complaining about the lack of uniformity between professors.
It's a minor complaint - a first world problem. With only one semester of grades, when one section gives out lots of 100's and 99's, and other sections have two classes top out at ~96/97 and the other at 98, it's kind of hard to compete, even if you had CALI'ed two classes also. Another semester of grades will balance that out more. Anyone for whom it really matters will do fine, anyways. (The only case where I can imagine it actually mattering is if someone wanted to transfer to Yale, and they were ~3-5 in the class instead of 1-2 because of professors). I heard that one year, someone gave out 4 100's to a 1L class, which is bonkers.

The median vs a forced curve gives professors some latitude to do stupid things. Even worse, the median is between 86.5 and 87.5 - so while most professors just grade to 87.5 like any reasonable person would, some (probably out of ignorance, not malice) grade to a lower mark. Some professors don't realize that they don't have to use the standard deviation of 5 that the registrar sets as a default. (It's my understanding that the program they use has them put in a median and a standard deviation, and puts things in order. I could be wrong.) I'd be a lot happier if they were all forced to - instead, we get people like Dinner messing stuff up.

Hoos I asked my gf about this and she instantly knew who I was talking about (and that he's number 1).

Let this be a word to the wise OLs: there is no faster way to ostracise yourself from your classmates than being a jerk about your grades. Thankfully, we go to a pretty laid back school, and there is a tactful way to discuss jobs/grades among friends, but if you're looking for ways to tell other people how awesome you are, you should reevaluate yourself.

Yes, more granularity is better than less. Only Yale/Harvard etc. can pull off H/P/LP. If for whatever reason you don't like presenting it to employers this way, we now have letter grade equivalents, too. Everyone should be happy.
