Anyone know anything about Ticon Properties, specifically their Avalon and/or Lenox apartments? Seems like they are as close as the popular Pinnacle Ridge Apts (2.5 miles from West Campus, albeit in a different direction) and really cheap (<$700 for 1br). Anything I'm missing here - are they in a bad area or something?

No, they're okay, but it's hard to get in to Lenox because it's pretty much always full. I tried to lease from them last year but they gave us a run-around for a while and when they finally had something available, it was too late. I don't know anything about Avalon but the Lenox apartments are nice, Morreene Road is pretty sketchy generally (high crime area) but as far as I know there haven't been any problems within the complex. I have a friend that lived there and he never had any issues.

So how difficult is life without a car in Durham on a scale of 1-10, 1 being terrible and 10 being fine? Can I pay a little extra to get a place close enough to walk to the law school in a reasonable amount of time? What can/should I do to mitigate the effect of not having a car? What you should do to mitigate the effect of not having a car is to (in descending order):

1) Get a car.
2) Pay appreciable more to live near campus and still at least own a bike.
3) Live further off campus and make sure you have plenty of friends who have cars.

People have done law school without a car in Durham, I just do not know how, personally.

Duke is 10th in UNSWR and 10th in fed clerkship percentage out of the T-14, so not sure what you are looking for here.

In addition to that, the percentage was a very respectable 12.9% for the Class of 2012 and 11.1% for 2011. I'm also unsure where you're seeing that it doesn't match up to its peers here. When it comes to federal clerkships, Yale's in a class of its own, Stanford and Harvard give the next best bet, and the rest of the T14 are, more-or-less, peers experiencing some yearly variation.

Yeh, coming from the Big Ten, that's cheaper for me. I also took a look around their sites to see what I could come up with, and I'm not seeing anything different (save for a page most recently updated for 2011 football tickets ).

I went to a similar school, and our season tix were only $50 after we pay the athletics fee (ie we were enrolled that semester and not interning or anything). I guess that, prices aside, I'm mainly surprised that it seems as though there is no discount for students.

Dude, come on now. You're surprised? Before the program's resurgence under Cut, it was historically bad. Like, maybe win a game or two against DII teams bad. And not only was it bad, but it was underfunded and generally treated as a distant afterthought to the basketball team. Hence, no one really bothered to get involved with the football team.

The recent conference realignment has put the fear of God in the administration, though. They made a great hire in Coach Cut, and they've put a lot more dollars towards the football program. They're also in the process of remodeling the football stadium (including, importantly, removing the track), which should help a lot.

I think "football as religion" is more applicable farther south than in a basketball-first state like NC, but I'm hoping these recent improvements will sustain Duke football as a viable second team to the basketball program.

That would be incredible/astonishing (coming from an undergrad with a good football program). This is four years old and anonymous but backs up your impression. Wow, even the bowl games have been free.

Well at any rate, I'm excited to finally have a reason to get into college basketball!

For what it's worth, though, the football program has crazy momentum right now. The administration is pouring money into it. The stadium is being renovated. We've made two consecutive bowl games. We're rolling on the recruiting trail - the last few classes have been some of the best in Duke history, and just today we picked up a commitment from our highest-rated recruit ever. If football is your thing (and I'm with you there - the first Duke sporting event I attended was a football game), the next few years should be good ones.
