Yes, they do make decisions in the order they read apps.

But do they read apps in the order that they receive them? I applied mid Dec and got an acceptance with the first batch of RD.

I went complete mid-December and got in with the first RD round.

To the OP (thanks in advance!): I know 1Ls aren't supposed to work, but there is something about crippling debt looming ahead for me (200k-ish with interest) that makes me cringe. So what are your thoughts on a 10-12 hour/week job that would bring in roughly $16,000 over the academic year, money that would go straight to paying off that debt?

I would not do it. That's not to say that it can't be done, but I personally do not think it would be worth it.

Really though it depends on how flexible it is. Is it something you have to go to 10-12 hours a week every week, or could you take time off near finals? Is it set hours, or work from home?

The thing is, during the semester, working 10-12 hours a week is possible, though tough - it just means you'll work instead of working out, socializing, doing activities, etc. But having to work 10-12 hours during and immediately before finals would be absolutely unmanageable (in my opinion).

Either way I wouldn't do it. Personally, I would have found making friends/connections and really devoting myself fully to law school to be more worthwhile than any money I would have made. But if your job is flexible enough, it's doable.

You can take classes with other schools in Columbia University; a limited number can even be credited towards your law degree. You won't be able to do this until 2L, however, so you should probably revisit the idea after getting 1L out of the way.

Yeah I plan on going to some of the pre-orientation events (UN visit, community service event, scavenger hunt, etc.) and a bunch of the events during and after orientation. I think there will be plenty of time to meet people and make friends.

i only went to one day of ASW, didn't meet anyone I kept in touch with, and im living 80 blocks away. if im not concerned you don't need to be

I hope so. This is a great city, but I just moved here a week ago and I do not know anyone! I am sure it would be a lot more fun with friends and such.

Check this out. I played with this for hours when I was applying last fall. This is based on hard numbers to so it is probably a bit better than TLS conjecture.

it's a far shot, but not entirely impossible. off the top of my head I only know of one person who got in this year with a 169, not including URMs. but if it is your absolute first choice and you think you'd have regrets not giving it a shot, well thats what ED is for.

There are elevators. Not sure about laundry, but there's no central AC. Honestly, I think only Lenfest (maybe Lionsgate) has central AC - it's definitely a luxury in New York City. Bring a unit.

I never went to the UN visit/scavenger hunt (it's 90+ degrees out in New York City this summer, the last thing I want to be doing is hauling my ass around), but met hundreds of my future friends and classmates at places like the Pourhouse and O'Connell's.*


* You will eventually come to realize that these places suck, but as part of your hazing, you're on your own to find the cool bars in Morningside.

I never went to the UN visit/scavenger hunt (it's 90+ degrees out in New York City this summer, the last thing I want to be doing is hauling my ass around), but met hundreds of my future friends and classmates at places like the Pourhouse and O'Connell's.*
