Re: Columbia 1L Taking Qs
To the OP (thanks in advance!): I know 1Ls aren't supposed to work, but there is something about crippling debt looming ahead for me (200k-ish with interest) that makes me cringe. So what are your thoughts on a 10-12 hour/week job that would bring in roughly $16,000 over the academic year, money that would go straight to paying off that debt?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I would not do it. That's not to say that it can't be done, but I personally do not think it would be worth it.iminlstrick wrote:To the OP (thanks in advance!): I know 1Ls aren't supposed to work, but there is something about crippling debt looming ahead for me (200k-ish with interest) that makes me cringe. Really though it depends on how flexible it is. Is it something you have to go to 10-12 hours a week every week, or could you take time off near finals? Is it set hours, or work from home?
The thing is, during the semester, working 10-12 hours a week is possible, though tough - it just means you'll work instead of working out, socializing, doing activities, etc. But having to work 10-12 hours during and immediately before finals would be absolutely unmanageable (in my opinion).
Either way I wouldn't do it. Personally, I would have found making friends/connections and really devoting myself fully to law school to be more worthwhile than any money I would have made. But if your job is flexible enough, it's doable.

Great, thanks! Another question, are there foreign language training courses offered through Columbia and which are accessible to law students? I'd love to review and gain additional fluency in a language or learn a new one. Thanks again!

You can take classes with other schools in Columbia University; a limited number can even be credited towards your law degree. You won't be able to do this until 2L, however, so you should probably revisit the idea after getting 1L out of the way.iminlstrick wrote:Great, thanks! do many people actually do this? or do most have their hands full with bar-related courses in the last two years?Antipodean wrote:You can take classes with other schools in Columbia University; a limited number can even be credited towards your law degree. Yeah I plan on going to some of the pre-orientation events (UN visit, community service event, scavenger hunt, etc.) and a bunch of the events during and after orientation. I think there will be plenty of time to meet people and make friends.somewhatwayward wrote:i didn't really meet anyone at ASW who is going to CLS, which i think a lot of people did. plus, i am not living in CLS housing or anything. i guess i'm a little neurotic.remz wrote:Isn't everyone in this boat? 168, 3.88. Been in a big debate with myself on if I should/how I should use my ED for the upcoming cycle. Would I have any shot whatsoever with an ED to Columbia with those numbers, or should I be using it for a more realistic target (7-14)?
Thanks!
Thanks!

I hope so. This is a great city, but I just moved here a week ago and I do not know anyone! I am sure it would be a lot more fun with friends and such.

Check this out. I played with this for hours when I was applying last fall. This is based on hard numbers to so it is probably a bit better than TLS conjecture.

Edit: pay attention to the percentages as well. They are more telling than the pretty colors!

Re: Columbia 1L Taking Qs
it's a far shot, but not entirely impossible. off the top of my head I only know of one person who got in this year with a 169, not including URMs. but if it is your absolute first choice and you think you'd have regrets not giving it a shot, well thats what ED is for.Ildeuce wrote:168, 3.88. There are elevators. Not sure about laundry, but there's no central AC. Honestly, I think only Lenfest (maybe Lionsgate) has central AC - it's definitely a luxury in New York City. Bring a unit.hoopsguy6 wrote:Anybody care to share info about the 400 block 115th Street apartments?

Almost every night of Orientation involves some sort of bar/drinking event. I never went to the UN visit/scavenger hunt (it's 90+ degrees out in New York City this summer, the last thing I want to be doing is hauling my ass around), but met hundreds of my future friends and classmates at places like the Pourhouse and O'Connell's.*booyakasha wrote:we all are, don't worry. you'll meet tons of people during orientation and in legal methods.somewhatwayward wrote:i didn't really meet anyone at ASW who is going to CLS, which i think a lot of people did. plus, i am not living in CLS housing or anything. i guess i'm a little neurotic.remz wrote:Isn't everyone in this boat? Hazing already? I approve. At least tell them to go to HH at the Heights for 4 dollar lethal margaritas and food with arbitrary carrots.Lem37 wrote:Almost every night of Orientation involves some sort of bar/drinking event. When do we get our class schedules? And what does a typical class schedule look like after our 2 pass/fail classes are over in mid-September?
