Re: Drexel 2L Taking Questions. Ask Me Anything!
A girl on Law Review who got an SA through OCI said the big firms won't look at you unless you're in the top 5-10%. So yeah, Big Law is far from a safe bet at Drexel (and Temple, Villanova, Rutgers-Camden, I might add). I believe small and mid-size firms did recruit at OCI as well.

This is not true anymore, to the best of my knowledge. You can participate in OCI if you're dead last in the class, but don't expect to get a Big Law SA unless you're top 5-10%.Capitol_Idea wrote:Dude I know who went there said (I dimly recall) that only the top 20% can even participate in OCI so there's that.Nebby wrote:About the top 15% according to lstreportsPourMeTea wrote:how many students actually get gigs from drexel oci?
For Philly Big Law, I would recommend only HYS and Penn with a massive scholarship.

The girl from Law Review says she personally knows 7 people who got Big Law SAs thru OCI, so the odds are not good if your heart is set on Big Law. Keep in mind that small/mid firms and public interest employers also recruited at OCI. Career Strategies still hasn't answered my email, but I will post their response re: Big Law once their office opens up next week.PourMeTea wrote:how many students actually get gigs from drexel oci?

Is it true that the bottom of the class gets kicked out after 1L?
How have things changed with the Thomas Kline money?
What does the Philly PI community think about Drexel? Are they prestige obsessed or do they actually give you guys a shot? It's hard for me to imagine them giving you guys a shot because Philly doesn't exactly have a ton of entry level PI job openings.

No, the bottom of the class doesn't get kicked out. You have to literally not open a book for a semester in order to fail a class. First year classes curve to a 3.0.Skool wrote:Is it true that the bottom of the class gets kicked out after 1L?

Philly PI community is not prestige obsessed, particularly legal aid, PD, and DA.

What made you able to adapt in Philly but not in Boston? Are the cities really that different?

More livable city; lower cost of living. Staying with family is saving me a ton of money. Also, I felt my old school was pretty cutthroat and unhealthily competitive, whereas Drexel has a more laid-back vibe. Much happier here.jrass wrote:What made you able to adapt in Philly but not in Boston? Are the cities really that different?

Would you say the fed clerkship numbers are unrepresentative of the total amount of people who ultimately end up clerking?

Don't really understand your question. You have to be about top 5% to clerk federally, and even then, it's not a lock. Most clerkships obtained by Drexel students are state trial court (i.e. Court of Common Pleas).barkschool wrote:Would you say the fed clerkship numbers are unrepresentative of the total amount of people who ultimately end up clerking?

Also, a good number of Drexel students obtain clerkships in the NJ judiciary.

I know this is a somewhat old thread, but if offered admission to both Nova and Drexel with a substantial scholarship, and Temple for near sticker (sticker is only ~$20k/year), would you see any advantages with Drexel? Other than location in the city vs Villanova's suburbian location, what made you choose Drexel? Your stats should have had you looking at a full-ride to both Villanova and Drexel, and substantial to Temple - am I correct?
I may be making this decision this cycle - why did you choose Drexel out of the three?
Thanks!

Not OP (at Penn) but unless you have some amazing work experience/connections for a legal job I would probably choose Temple at 20k over Drexel or Nova. Although neither are great options of course.bmathers wrote:I know this is a somewhat old thread, but if offered admission to both Nova and Drexel with a substantial scholarship, and Temple for near sticker (sticker is only ~$20k/year), would you see any advantages with Drexel? Temple at $20k over Villanova at $0-10k? Is there really much difference in how they are seen by employers around the city that could justify spending the extra $$$? Note: I have zero interest in BiglawAuxilio wrote:Not OP (at Penn) but unless you have some amazing work experience/connections for a legal job I would probably choose Temple at 20k over Drexel or Nova. Zero interest in big law probably makes it more of a toss up.bmathers wrote:Temple at $20k over Villanova at $0-10k? op won't be responding to you. But I chose Drexel over the the philly schools so maybe I can help. I had my goals set--wanted to do small law, criminal law, etc--really wanted to get some work experience from their coop--so I chose Drexel--it was free; I got some great work experience, and people in central pa think Drexel is a good school. i got my job from my work experience, which I attribute to Drexel. It's a good school if you have your head on straight.bmathers wrote:I know this is a somewhat old thread, but if offered admission to both Nova and Drexel with a substantial scholarship, and Temple for near sticker (sticker is only ~$20k/year), would you see any advantages with Drexel? If you want criminal law, Drexel for free is an adequate choice. If you want business law, go Villanova. Make sure it's free though.
