What I've gotten as far as OP's employment desires:
I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don't want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.

I don't think anyone on this thread understands how much it costs to build out a McDonalds franchise, nor how much McD's franchise owners make.
If you have that kind of money (I'm assuming 7 figures), then just do whateverTF you feel like doing.

You obviously do not know a thing about investing or business in general.kalvano wrote:What I've gotten as far as OP's employment desires:

Re: LAw School or Mcdonalds Franchise
Depending on the market, they require around 700k in liquid assets, i'm close to it, but it would take a couple years of work to get there fully. ~400k down payment, the rest could be loans, 10% profit margin on an average store
Of course sales vary between the worst performing store at 450,000 and the highest earns 9.5 million is sales, 10% profit.

That sounds about right for a smaller market . . . Assuming this isn't a flame, you're debating between McD's, law school, or the army. You sound like you're just a young guy with a lot of money looking to do something for the sheer vanity of it. Which is fine. I'd go the easiest route of the 3 which is probably the McDonalds franchise.alaird21 wrote:Depending on the market, they require around 700k in liquid assets, i'm close to it, but it would take a couple years of work to get there fully. ~400k down payment, the rest could be loans, 10% profit margin on an average store

If you decide you still want to do law school in a few years you'll have money coming in, and can enjoy law school without the stress that most others have to deal with. Plus, you'll be older and will (hopefully) have more clarity on what it is that you want to do with your life.

Re: LAw School or Mcdonalds Franchise
Well turns out, McDonald's only accepts 1% of potential franchise owners that have the capital. Previous managerial experience is a necessary condition as well as ability to motivate employees. Being 23 will also work against me. I've always been interested managing soldiers and it would give me relevant skills transferable to business. This forum if anything else has steered me away from making a potential self-destructive investment. Plus making 70k 3 years in isnt't too bad.

Look at it this way...either way you go, there's a decent shot you could end up working in the fast food industry long-term.

I wouldn't have thought of this if I didn't go to law school, but the contracts aren't identical. Instead of thinking about a specific franchise or cuisine, read the model franchise-franchisee contracts of each restaurant, and pick the one that's best for you. Getting the lease, paying it all out of pocket, having to buy wholesale from McDonalds, and then paying McDonalds a percentage of the earnings is a big risk.alaird21 wrote:I think it's relevant to ask law students this because law school is an investment. would the investment be better served elsewhere, given all this pessimism of law grad prospects. Sinking 300k into a school with a 75% chance of getting biglaw sounds risky too

Do you really think no one has thought of this? The franchise obviously wants to limit the states that it's in.ymmv wrote:Open some east coast In-N-Outs plz.

Don't open a McDonald's. McDonald's makes startup costs way too high and they're tough to manage because you have to sell such a wide array of food.
Subway sucks so don't open one of those either.
I would say to go for something simple, but still well-known in your area. Check to see if Bojangles or Zaxby's franchise.

where i live, there's around every corner and they're all packed all the time. you cant't franchise them though. y'all know you can leverage 80% of what it cost. so if you have 500,000 you can borriw 2.5 mil, and then buy multiple franchises. too risky right now though, i need to get some type of management experience before any franchise would agree to partner. Y'all biglawyers should think doing an austerity plan and save up and do the same thing, we'll revolutionize this thingkalvano wrote:Raising Cane's.
