Surprised no one has mentioned taxes. That was the main thing I heard people pushing VA for. Something just irks me about not living in "the city", but I get that DC isn't really like most other cities in that respect.lhanvt13 wrote:Great area though. Good groceries and close to bars. Is Clarendon good for joggers? Another reason I lean towards Foggy Bottom is jogging through the national mall seems like it'd be epic. I get bored without things to look at.

Plenty of places to jog in nova - parks and Arlington in general. Also, lots of biking trailsdanquayle wrote:Surprised no one has mentioned taxes. Most people who work in DC live in va or md (mostly va) and Arlington is nice. May be more expensive than lots of DC though. Tread carefully.

How much do you make? VA is cheaper, but unless you make good money it's not that big of a deal.

I go to GW Law, and I avoid the undergraduate portion of campus (they're very separate) at all costs. The only good part of Campus is the Uptowner, which is connected to the law school.rayiner wrote:GW isn't the kind of college with a good vibe. Its people who want to DC so hard they UG in DC. Pass.

I live in Foggy Bottom. Not the most fun neighborhood in DC, but I like it. Close to Gtown, Dupont, Waterfront...quiet, clean, nice. I'd try to go north and west of the metro/GW though.mtn663 wrote:Nobody lives in Foggy Bottom.danquayle wrote:Is Arlington really "urban" though? Low 200k. DC has an progressive tax bracket right?Desert Fox wrote:How much do you make? VA is cheaper, but unless you make good money it's not that big of a deal.
Still have more than half that in loans, so I'm not trying to leave money on the table.

My family income is about the same and VA saves about 400-500 a month. Less if you have cars since VA taxes them heavily.danquayle wrote:Low 200k. Heard about the high taxes too but idk compared to other states/dc . But if u have a va tag in nova, you might have to do the annoying emissions test requirements.

I'm right at the bridge to georgetown. Metro still an easy walk and gtown is very close. Once you cross the bridge, the walk to the metro starts being a real pain.Yeah man, love Georgetown. Wait, if you're going to work in VA then why not live in VA? Isn't DC to VA like a backwards commute?

Annual property tax on the value of the car as assessed at the beginning of the year. Think the current rate is $4.57 per $100 of value. You need both an emissions test and a safety inspection to register your car.danquayle wrote:How do they tax cars? I like living in cities. With regards to the car tax, is this only if you own it? I lease one.Ron Mexico wrote:Wait, if you're going to work in VA then why not live in VA? Isn't DC to VA like a backwards commute?

Me too. But when it comes to DC, the suburbs are often cityisher than the city. It's a miserable place for city people. But I would not pay a big premium to technically live "in DC" for a city experience. Because you are likely to not get that.danquayle wrote:I like living in cities.Ron Mexico wrote:Wait, if you're going to work in VA then why not live in VA? Isn't DC to VA like a backwards commute?

Re: Commute from DC to Tyson's
That is precisely the vibe I get. I've visited tons of times and loved it, but visiting is so different than living. Maybe it's because of all the government green space or the the height limitation? It does look like they're trying to make NoVa into more of a traditional city. Tyson's has this big effort to urbanize apparently, but every time I've been it seems like suburban sprawl hell.DELG wrote:Me too. Tysons is the worst part of nova by a lot.
I wouldn't pan gtown for lack of metro alone. There is decent bus access. If you're gonna drive anyway.
Other than that, DF is credited. But you have to remember that everything sucks relative to Chicago, and let it go.

Re: Commute from DC to Tyson's
Lived in DC before law school and going back. Follow everyone's advice and live in Arlington. Lower taxes, much better commute, and just as "city" as Foggy Bottom is. Clarendon is kind of the hub and the most urban feeling, but anywhere from Rosslyn-Ballston will do the trick.
And in response to a previous poster, I'd say don't sleep on Rosslyn. It's definitely true that it's not the most fun neighborhood on its own since it's mostly commercial. But transportation options are great because you're on the Orange (out to Ballston and then Fairfax, or in to DC), the Blue (Alexandria or, more importantly, the airport) and eventually the Silver. Plus, there's the Circulator that runs into Georgetown and Dupont, which is super convenient since getting to those places from anywhere else in Arlington either involves a decent walk from Foggy Bottom or a cab. Rosslyn's also right next to the Custis and Mt Vernon running trails, if that's your thing. It's not the kind of neighborhood you'll hang out in a lot, but you can get to a ton of places from it.
