How much debt are you in, and, being in the best scenario possible upon graduation from GULC, for how long do you think you will humor misery, and at that time how do you think you'll go out (by layoff or attrition)?

What's your plan after BigLaw spits you out, if any?
I'm not sure why I posted, honestly. If you listened to people like me, you wouldn't be where you are today! I wish you the best of luck.
Bahaha, I wan't going to feed the trolls, but your recant deserves a response :)

The honest answer is that I chose a firm that is known to hold onto people for the long run (they have more partners than associates) and emphasizes quality of life, even if it's less prestigious / pays a bit less. Ideally I would stay there and work my way up to partner, but I'm not naive enough to bank on or expect this (and may not even want it when I start). If it doesn't pan out, I'll try to go in house in the tech / media space (where I have experience), or transition back into the space in a non-legal capacity.
That wasn't a recant.

GULC 1L. Any tips on finishing the semester strong and then any advice on approaching OCI. Any particular strategy? Sounds like you went somewhat conservative.

Get off TLS :)

But seriously, look at your professors' exams. You can get a pretty good idea of what you need to know from old exams, and from there just learn that shit really well, and what style your or professors like. Also, last semesters best answers are already up on the library web site ... Figure out what those people did that you didn't.

Re: EIW, if a law firms median GPA is .1 or .2 over yours but you otherwise think you're a good fit, go for it. GULC had a great mock interview program, but if you'd like extra practice shoot me a PM and well set something up.

Thanks your help. I appreciate the Get off TLS feedback! Did you rely on the Private-Sector Grade History that OCI provides? The data goes back to the 90s and just provides a median and high GPA a firm accepts or accepted. Do you know if that's at all accurate?

Thanks again.

Ok - I have a few too many questions for you, and I'm sure you won't be able to answer all (or any) of them. Just gonna throw 'em out there anyway. Thanks...

- How many peeps do you know of/have you heard of shooting for capital hill jobs? Would you say a significant # of any given class identifies cap hill jobs as their top priority, or do a lot of peeps just fall into those jobs due to a lack of other options?
- For those that do aim for capital hill jobs, how helpful is the OCS? Do they really help connect the dots or are peeps required to network for themselves?
- of the 89 govt jobs the class of 2013 landed, roughly how many do you think are in D.C.?
- more broadly, how competitive is the hunt for govt jobs at GULC?

I know these are really specific questions. Just tell me to fuck off if you can't answer them.

Also. Don't try to game the lottery. I ranked one of my favorite firms lower because the bid stats indicated they weren't popular. And didn't get an interview. Ironically though, I ended up reaching out to a connection I made there and that's where I'll be working (on that note, use whatever connections you have. College alums, law school alums, family. HellI got my job through a high school alum .. Now ain't the time to be bashful).

I don't really know about the accuracy, but it's a decent guide. Firms that have a 3.7 median, for example, won't settle for much less. But like I said, I was within .1 of two of my callbacks, so don't get too hung up.

GULC 2L here. Something I've heard from OCS and upperclassmen is that, because those GPAs aren't reflective of ITE, you should consider medians to be floors.

Also, someone asked earlier about need-based aid. GULC doesn't tell you what portion of your award is merit vs. need-based, so the easy conclusion to draw is that need-based aid is illusory. However, in my personal experience, my initial scholly offer was 15k/yr, but after submitting my financial aid materials that was bumped up to 35k/yr, unsolicited. I'm REALLY fucking poor though.

Can you create an FBI-esque profiling of these top 10%-ers?

What do they eat? How much do they sleep? Who do they know? Are they going to blow something up if they don't find themselves in the top 10%?

does that make you more, or less dangerous than these unknown, potential national security threats that are the 64.2 members of the top 10%?

Billpackets, I don't know what kind of point you're trying to prove by rehashing this good fellows level of sobriety.

What we need to be concerned with right now is the identities of the top 10% at GULC, and how dangerous they may be.
