After watching freakonomics and reading a book on the subject, I almost felt it was necessary. I feel the merit of your work will be the larger factor for employment; nevertheless, if two applicants with similar resumes (Tyrone v. Bradley) apply for the same position I feel Brad gets the first shot at the job over Ty. FWIW The POTUS went by Barry instead of Barack which gives me the impression that he felt similar regarding the name situation.

BTW I'm a URM and non-URMs boomers love my anglo nickname- makes me seem more like them.

Even after arbitrary cuts like GPA and School attended eliminates many applicants, there will potentially be many candidates left to choose from. When this happens DeShawn, Unyque, and Sadaam are at a more disadvantage than Charles, Sarah, and Michael.

That there are people who don't believe Bobby/Timmy/Rusty/Randy are actual given legal names is why I want to change mine. I think I'm going with Alastair.

I dare you to change your middle name to Crowley. Actually, that'd be kind of awesome. If I was a partner I'd hire you just so I could say Alistar Crowley works for my law firm.

I named a kid Aleister. I thought it was common as heck, but, no, it isn't. We couldn't decide on which spelling to use, so we chose Crowley's.

For advice, I use a nickname professionally because my given name is much too much. You wouldn't believe the difference it actually makes. The diminutive is semi-standard, and people do not get confused when someone else uses the whole name. It was a strange adjustment because my kid nickname wasn't any better so I had to get used to hearing the new one--and being slightly annoyed at the need to change it in the first place.

What surprisingly works is to use the more professional-sounding name on cover letters, correspondence, and any opportunity you have--even though you have to put your full name on your application. Unless your given name is offensive, I think most of the benefit of changing your name happens at the informal level and there wouldn't be much benefit to an official change.
