Re: Boalt's tuition next year. 66,000k+ IN STATE tuition & fees
This just illustrates how law schools can basically get away with murder (and I don't just mean Berkley, because $44 instate (which is what there website says) is on par with other T10s). The demand for law school is so incredibly inelastic, that schools can continue to hike up rates even in light of sobering job prospects because the overwhelming majority of law school applicants aren't too price conscious. Until law school prospectives reach a point where they actually say that the price of the education isn't worth the ridiculous debt, prices will likely continue to increase by thousands of dollars every year.
And many practicing attorneys that aren't fresh out of law school don't know just how much debt it takes now when they advise prospectives to disregard debt for a top school. In the mid 90s, for example, at Michigan, yearly out-of-state tuition was roughly $22k. In the mid 80's it was a mere $8k for out-of-staters (History of Michigan's Tuition). Even adjusting for inflation (Relative Values Calculator), this doesn't come close to the current $47k/year sticker shock for 2010.

Wow that's a huge point in favor of Michigan vs. Berkeley for example. If you have to pay sticker at both you'll be saving well over 30k if you choose Michigan.im_blue wrote:Berkeley's going to have the highest T14 (non-resident) tuition in 2010-11, except possibly for the two NYC schools.

Not sure what you mean by "well over 30K". Surely, the difference adds up to $26,208 (still a big chunk, mind you). Perhaps you were counting interest.def2104 wrote:Wow that's a huge point in favor of Michigan vs. Berkeley for example. I was including the interest you will have to pay and taking into account the additional increases in berk tuition in the next two years. But thanks.sumus romani wrote:Not sure what you mean by "well over 30K". Surely, the difference adds up to $26,208 (still a big chunk, mind you). But also keep in mind that you get in-state tuition for 2L and 3L years at Berkeley, and not at Michigan.def2104 wrote: I was including the interest you will have to pay and taking into account the additional increases in berk tuition in the next two years. But thanks.

Really?!? Damn, I thought you got in state second and third year at Michigan. At least I was planning on applying for it.malfurion wrote:But also keep in mind that you get in-state tuition for 2L and 3L years at Berkeley, and not at Michigan.def2104 wrote: I was including the interest you will have to pay and taking into account the additional increases in berk tuition in the next two years. I think Mich's residency requirements are pretty strict. Someone at ASW told me that they were paying out-of-state for all three years and that most of their classmates were as well.def2104 wrote:Really?!? The Boalt residency discount is huge. For 2010-2011, for example, you save $6k+ per semester if you are a resident.

This is the relevant quote...
"When the Regents approved the fee increases for the 2010-11 academic year, they were also provided proposed fee level increases for the 2011-12 and 2012 academic years. Thus, total resident fees for Berkeley Law students during the 2010-11 academic year will be $44,220 and the estimated total resident fees for the 2011-12 and 2012-13 academic years will be $49,347 and $51,815 respectively."

To make an obvious point, I think we should consider that COL in places like the SF Bay Area and NYC are higher because they're more desirable places to live relative to Philadelphia, Ann Arbor, or Charlottesville...
I don't know about you guys, but I'd rather pay more to live in NYC/SF
than live in some shit town for three years... that's just my personal preference

This is not going to be the case going into the future. It looks like the differential will be 3K per semester or 6K per year going forward. The Boalt residency discount is huge. For 2010-2011, for example, you save $6k+ per semester if you are a resident.

Just because I disagree I'm a troll? It's no secret Berkeley isn't the nicest place in the world and that a lot of prospective and actual students really dislike the place. That does not make Boalt a terrible school and it doesn't make me a troll.I am a Boaltie. Most of us like Berkeley. Like I said: Pointless trolling.

I know Dean Schwartz (UCLA) has a lot of worries about rising tuition, and he did say something about making the next UCLA dean's priorities to lower tuition. Now that Moran is the new dean, I hope they don't follow in Boalt's footsteps - but I'm not hopeful.

I don't think their tuition is outrageous compared to other top law schools (actually lower than some). I guess the COL really drives the total COA up, but the school can't control that...

Disclaimer: This is largely sour grapes. I hope to practice in cali, and boalt was my top choice going into my cycle but I didn't get in.
This definitely makes me feel a bit better that the 24k I am saving by going to Michigan might actually be the more prudent decision (maybe 50k if I were to assume that, even if i got in, boalt would not match my scholarship from michigan but that's probably going too far).
