Any 3rd or 4th tier success stories? Forum

I know someone who graduated from St. Thomas 2 years ago. She had a rough time finding a job for awhile, looking in FL, CT, NJ, and NY, but eventually after working her ass off she got a job at a firm in NYC--she's very persistent and aggressive! She is working 1 or 2 other jobs in addition to this, though. It's because she wants to make more money and live a nice rich life, apparently, and not because she physically has to. She lives on her own in a nice part of Harlem, and still makes time to travel to different cities on the weekends and go to the bar after work. I'm sure her story is not typical, but she is definitely an example of someone who succeeded through hard work (no connections, no lawyers in her family, btw). I understand the TLS animosity towards tier 3 schools, but you can't expect the name on your degree to carry you through life stress free either. Getting a job is about putting yourself out there and networking. Your life is what you make it out to be!

lol, it's true. she's working in NYC. as far as how, i couldnt tell you. she was the "i've been wanting to be a lawyer since i was a kid" and was willing to go anywhere she was taken. i had never even heard of the school until she graduated. is she happy? maybe. is she making a lot of money? no clue. but she did make it eventually, so it is possible..

I, too, agree that it's what you make of it. 5 to 6 or maybe 10 years after school it's all about what you've done. The name can only carry you so far. Thanks for your $.02.

Um, anyone our parent's age. My dad went to a fucking toilet and he has made a very decent living. I'd say he gets like $80,000 in a mid-size city where $80,000 is a nice salary. He might even get up to $100,000 but he wouldn't tell me. I'm pretty sure everyone my dad's age went to a toilet and was fine. However, law school just didn't used to cost what it does now. My professor went to a top 100 law school for like $5,000 per year. Now tuition there is four times that, if you live in state. The only reason law school is so risky and scary and everyone says you should go to a top school is because the debt is a bitch and if you don't get it covered, you're fucked. If you get a scholarship or have a job lined up somehow, I don't see how a TTTT school would be a bad choice.

This kid hasn't gotten his law degree yet and certainly hasn't worked in the law profession. I love how he's doling this draconian advice like he's an expert.

I would agree a higher ranked school could mean more opportunities to confront Mt. Debt, but I think the people who say "Go top 14 or be a janitor!" are assholes.

Don't listen to any of these assholes, citrus. You are absolutly right, going to T3/T4 school is one of the most prudent decisions you can make. Remember a JD is a JD, no matter where its from.

Well, I suppose if he goes to a school with low tuition... maybe OP should go to People's College of Law. It's a 3-year JD program with one of the lowest tuitions around!

First off you need to define what success is. Is it making 6 figures 3-5 years after graduation? Coming out with little debt, and when I say little I'm talking no more than 15-20K? Having a job that is in law and not having that job be a paralegal? Being employed in the city/area you enjoy? Doing something that you enjoy everyday?

Got to be specific man! Operationalize success then we can start talking here!

Good luck making 6 figures 3-5 years after graduation from a TTT or TTTT school. Coming out with little debt is certainly possible because if you go to a TTT or TTTT school one of the main reasons, in my humble opinion, should be because you are coming out with no debt or little debt which you can pay off in just a few years. You could be in a the city/area you enjoy rather easily as there are alot of toilets in California and Florida, Dayton comes to mind.

So please define clearly what success is to you.

I do ok and graduated from a TTT LS. Its possible, but not easy. Most (more than 80% of the people I attended LS with are doing really poorly). However, thats basically the story you hear from almost anyone that attended a T30-TTTT (save about 20% from each school). Law is a gamble. If it pays off and you land a first job thats not awful, you'll likely be ok. If not...
