I suspect this has been answered somewhere before, but where can we find what jobs are considered "eligible public interest" jobs for guaranteed summer funding? I'm assuming that working with a judge is not eligible employment, right?

There's a database on lawnet that you can search through to find eligible public interest jobs (there's also outside databases, like PS Law Net). And yes, working with a judge is unfortunately not eligible for public interest funding.

Hey there...I recently took the LSAT and scored 170. My GPA from undergrad was 3.89 (from NYU), graduated with highest honors, summa cum laude, 3 years as opposed to four, and will have a masters. Columbia definitely a top choice school for me, so the issue i'm facing is whether or not to apply early with the 170, or retake in October and push back my application date with the hopes that I can score a few points higher on the October exam (I found the June test to be difficult compared to other exams I had taken (was scoring 173-174 on practice). Any advice?

retake. you'll probably be in with a couple more points, and November/December isn't that late to apply to Columbia. RD decisions don't start getting sent out until approximately the 3rd week in January.

softest by examsoft... during orientation you can got into IT and partition your drive, install windows and install examsoft via bootcamp on your mac. they give you the software, instructions and assistance. it takes about an hour or two.

basically. they'll give you the materials and instructions to do it yourself, but IT assists you if you have trouble.

you may as well retake (as long as you put the study time in) bc the earliest RD people hear is late january anyway. plus, you may have a shot at better schools if you raise that score.

fwiw, i had similar stats (same GPA with a 171), and i was in at CLS. they seem to admit a decent number of people with these stats, so you're probably all right regardless.

Did you use a broker? If so, what kind of broker fee should I expect to pay? Of those I have spoken with - some have no fee, others charge 1st month rent, and still others 15% of total lease. I want to make sure I do not overpay.

Also, any advice on areas within walking distance which are safest vs those to avoid?

I live in university housing, so I can't advise you on broker's fees, but as for areas to live in, I recommend anywhere between 105th street to 121st street from Riverside to Columbus/Morningside Drive. If you're looking at the block b/w Amsterdam and Broadway, you could even go a little further North than 121st (like to 124th). North of 120th on the far west side can get a litte dicey late at night. But living in this area makes walking to the law school easy and it's fairly safe.

I'm looking for a hotel to stay in around Columbia. Are there hotels that are a bit further away from Morningside Heights but cheaper, even if I have to pay for a taxi to get to Columbia?

Thanks! I'm going to post in the 2013 thread and see where people are staying. I should have looked earlier, but I thought I was going to stay with someone, but that fell through, so hotel it is...it's going to be me, my family, and a bunch of boxes + luggage.

So far, I've managed to find a hotel in the Upper West Side that's only $30 more than Marco LaGuardia. I just hope it isn't too grungy...

Ah congrats, for me space was a big issue as I'll also have stuff, so the Upper West Side hotels I browsed didn't seem to give me much of that within a reasonable price range. If you don't mind, could I ask what hotel you found? If it fits my needs, I might change my reservation to it. Thanks!

Hey.. Ive read on this forum that Columbia doesnt start making Regular Decisions until late January. If this is true, it seems it would make sense to always wait until after Fall grades come out to send off applications. But am I missing something here?? For instance, does Columbia make decisions in the order it receives applications??

Yes, they do make decisions in the order they read apps. Also, if they want your fall semester grades, they ask for them. This happened to both ED and RD applicants, which means although the acceptance letters may not go out til January, they are reading RD applications way before that. So you should apply as early as possible.

I don't know, but from the vast amount of people who say that the earlier they applied, the earlier they got in, I think that they probably do read apps in the order they receive them.
