Re: UVA 2L taking questions
I can't speak directly to this, since all of my remaining evals posted last week. However, there were only six 1L profs whose evals didn't post by last Wednesday, and a couple of friends I was with last night when grades came out still didn't then have all of their grades, so I infer that only those classes whose evals had already posted got grades.fouronthe4loor wrote:Is this exciting new release of grades just for the classes which had evals posted last week, but no grades? Re: UVA 2L taking questions
I didn't work for a state AG's office--I had a judicial internship my first summer--but I started looking into them right before I landed the job I took. What I did was go to the AG website of any state I could work in for free and researched how to apply. The earlier you can start, the better. I noticed that alumni are very eager to talk to students from their schools, so if there is a UVA alum in the office, it wouldn't hurt to bring attention to your application by making contact through a friendly e-mail.BruceWayne wrote:Hey shownprove thanks for this type of advice. Can you give more advice about Assistant State attorney general positions? Regardless of grades I'm curious about these. They may provide a good stepping stone to an AUSA spot one day.
Judges love hiring local students from top schools. Appellate judges usually put their offices in or around their hometowns, so even if you're not from a large city, there's probably a judge close to you. Last year, I tried being choosy at first, applying to only Fed. Dist. Ct. judges, but that almost did me in. Apply to state judges, too. Intermediate appellate courts usually need the most help. And start applying a.s.a.p., because these positions will fill up before March.plum wrote:what if u dont want to work for the govt...judicial internship?

Re: UVA 2L taking questions
So I filled out my FAFSA, and my EFC is 0. My question is that since I was accepted ED, can I expect any sort of need-based aid or scholarships? Or should I just start preparing myself for the likely possibility of funding this degree to the tune of +/-200k?
Thanks
Thanks

The official line of financial aid is that you get the same aid consideration as everyone else. Unofficially, clench.LLB2JD wrote:So I filled out my FAFSA, and my EFC is 0. Re: UVA 2L taking questions
Well, I guess I'll totally not hold out any hope whatsoever. What percentage of students though, do get some free money of any kind generally? I mean if you are as poor as a church rat, could you expect something like 10k-15k/year? It appears most of the other T14 schools do offer decent amounts of schollys/need-based grants regardless of whether or not they applied ED or not. I am becoming a little more terrified With each passing day.Kohinoor wrote:The official line of financial aid is that you get the same aid consideration as everyone else. Re: UVA 2L taking questions
As a general rule, there is no real need-based money for law school. I imagine that a good deal of people attending UVA had EFC's of zero as well, but that does not matter for law school. Quite a few people that attend do so with at least some scholarship money, including a handful who applied ED.
However, you will not get need-based money. Whether you get any merit scholarship money is up to the Admissions office, but it probably would not be more than 30k total, if anything.

UVA financial aid list both merit and need scholarships. Why would they list it if no one gets it?5ky wrote:As a general rule, there is no real need-based money for law school. They say it's on a "combination of need and merit". They don't say how much need is a factor. It could be .01% and still be true.r6_philly wrote:UVA financial aid list both merit and need scholarships. Why would they list it if no one gets it?

So since I was given a handful of merit money, I should not expect to receive any need ones on top of what I was already offered?

Re: UVA 2L taking questions
It seems harsh, but it makes sense. By the time law school rolls around, the students will have either been working on their own for a few years, or be going straight from UG. But in the latter case, it is much more rare for parents to pay for some/any of law school. That's a lot of EFC's of zero for the school to handle.

It's ok not to offer need grants since this is a professional program. But offering it and not giving it to the truly needy wouldn't be cool IMO. But no one should complain about not getting free money lol5ky wrote:It seems harsh, but it makes sense. Who's truly needy at law school? Loans can cover the entire expected cost of attendance. Someone who has $10k in the bank is barely in a better financial position than someone who's flat broke.r6_philly wrote:It's ok not to offer need grants since this is a professional program. The grades dilemma has been going on for a couple of weeks now. Is this normal? Or is this something that prospective students need to factor in their decision processes?RVP11 wrote:Let's get back on topic: fall course evals are down again.

This year is much worse than last year. Last year grades for all but two classes were in by the start of second semester. I don't think it's something you need to factor into your decision though. Sure, waiting a long time for grades sucks, once the waiting period is over it will not have mattered much.LLB2JD wrote:The grades dilemma has been going on for a couple of weeks now. Is this normal? Unless you're a 1L competing for firm jobs and every other student was able to submit grades weeks ago.Cavalier wrote:This year is much worse than last year. UVA has always been slow and 1L jobs ITE are a crap shoot regardless of where you go. Your 2L job is the only one that matters.

Re: UVA 2L taking questions
FWIW career services says firm jobs for 1Ls so far is up substantially this year compared to last year. Last year's 1L class, 19% did firm work for 1L. I wouldn't be surprised if it goes up to ~25% which is not an insignificant number so this "delusional" talk seems not quite on the mark. But then again the stats could be lies and my anecdotal evidence could be untrue...

Re: UVA 2L taking questions
The thing about 1L firm jobs being a hopeless goal is pretty inaccurate depending on who you are. Not to get into a racially fueled war but for URMS they are a realistic goal. This is particularly true for those of us from the South. Many of the Southern firms are willing to hire URM 1L's but this grade thing is really putting us at a disadvantage. And that's not even including the large number of diversity 1L summer associate programs outside the South. Many of their deadlines have already passed. I know a pretty good bit of URMs across all years who landed 1L firm jobs. Surprisingly about half of them got them in DC at that (which according to TLS is supposed to be impossible). I hate to say this but if you are a URM applicant I do think that you should take UVA's extremely slow grade processing time into account. It could mean the difference between getting a 1L firm job.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
