Also, any ideas as to why IU's rank jumped so much in USNWR in recent years? It was recently 36th and now 23rd. I heard it had something to do with a large donation from Mr. Maurer, but how much of an effect can that have on rank?

We got a lot from Mr. Maurer and another big donation the year before. I think 36 was a little low for IU, but I think 23 may be too high. Honestly though I dont think the difference from 23 to almost any top 40 public school is worth anything.

The money allowed the school to spend a lot more on scholarship money and other school related expenses, which helps the rankings a lot. So in reality the money is likely the sole cause of the jump, especially with the economy being so bleak and limiting other schools.

Well, I am thankful for the boost in scholarship money. Though, looking at last year's scholarships, I probably would have received the same offer last year.

I'm fairly sold on IU, and I will be touring there in a few weeks!

Did you get the same full-offer as I did, Halibut? What do you construe the scholarship conditions to mean? While many schools gave me the top 30-40 speech, Indiana seems to suggest it renews everything with the exception of total failure.

UCLA was previously my top choice before...but I really can't justify it financially. William and Mary was also an attractive offer, but not worth the extra 15-20k.

Yes, I got the full scholarship. I take it to mean that you basically just can't be a big failure or cheat or sleep with the dean's spouse or anything. This is why it is such a great offer in my eyes. I have similar offers elsewhere, but with GPA and/or class rank stipulations. I'll be taking a tour and a class visit and everything in a couple weeks, and that will be one of my big questions for admissions.

I agree with this. I definitely like Kilroy's, Nick's, Upstairs, etc...but they all basically welcome the same (loud) crowd. To go somewhere just to grab a drink or two and chat at night, there aren't a lot of good options.

I heard there is some sort of whiskey bar by that co-op or whatever it is. I haven't actually seen it or looked for it, but someone told me it exists. Maybe I would know if I was still single, but Friday and Saturday nights it's usually good to just relax.

But really, you should get away from the downtown area by the school if you want a quiet place to get a drink. There are 600 law students and 40,000 undergrads, so they cater to the undergrads.

I always liked the Video Saloon, but that's for a certain kind of person.

I like it too, but the last few times I've went it's been crowded as shit/filled with Kilroys caliber douchebags. I think the run-off from Brothers right next door has killed the atmosphere.

I got Bradley's crim law back. I haven't found anyone yet who is happy about their grade yet, including a few summer starters who did well in torts. I don't know who puts in grades on a Saturday, but I'm kind of hoping they messed up (not likely).

But yes, this is exactly what I didn't want to happen: get one mediocre (B+) grade back, then be stuck waiting for the rest of them. Doubt they put any up on Sunday.

I would like to point out that plenty of other schools have their grades up.

Yeah thats a good point I keep forgetting about Hoff. I think maybe crim law would come back before you guys in Crim pro. Is there a deadline for grades or is it just whenever they get them done?

For me, I figure Boshkoff will be done soon, Heidt said he is almost done, and who knows about Shreve.

I believe there is a deadline, but I don't know what it is and it sounds from students at other schools like those deadlines don't get adhered to too strictly anyway.

Less students in crim law + the crim law exam was before the crim pro exam = yes, I'd agree that if Hoffmann's grades aren't released simultaneously, crim law is definitely likely to be the first of the two. Since you're going to get your torts grade soon, I'm going to guess that you'll have your full set of grades before any summer starter does. Who knows though.

I'm certainly hoping for at least one grade on Monday. Now that others have started getting grades, I'm getting jealous/impatient/whatever.

Yeah Im flying out on Monday, So Im likely not going to see anything till I get back to Bloomington, which definitely has its perks. I really hope contracts or civ pro is up monday.

1. I recently took the LSAT and got a 169. I don't know what my GPA is, as British universities don't grade that way, but I graduated near the top of my class. I also have a Masters degree from Cambridge University and will have a PhD from there by the time I apply. Looking at the stats on Lawschoolnumbers, it would appear I was in with a good chance of a substantial scholarship, perhaps even a full ride. However, I would appreciate it if people actually studying at Indiana could tell me what they or their classmates needed to get scholarships.

2. The posts on this forum seem to indicate that scholarship retention conditions are pretty easy. Is it simply a matter of not failing, which is the condition placed on scholarships at most of the T14?

3. Several posters suggest that Indiana law students have had trouble finding legal employment, with 2L Law Review members striking out at OCI. Is this trouble simply with Big Law recruiting, or does this apply to small firms as well? I'm not particularly bothered about Big Law, and would happily take no debt and a less prestigious job, but I would like some form of legal employment!

Unless standards have gone up significantly from last year, 169 will get you a scholarship, and "how much" is the only question based on how the LSAC calculates your GPA.

It sounds like scholarship retention conditions have gone away entirely. The conditions for our class are just staying at 3.2 or better...and the middle of the class sits at a 3.3. But it sounds like you would hopefully have no requirement aside from not flunking out.

I can't speak to the employment stuff, still being a 1L myself.

Football season tickets were just $30 for 6 games. Obviously a good value there.

I believe the season tickets to basketball were $240...or something close to that. I didn't buy those. Assembly Hall is a great place to watch a game though.

1. Even the LSN data from this cycle seems to say that you should get a substantial, if not full, ride. You sound like a great applicant, especially coming from overseas. I think they throw more money at more diverse applicants. I saw one person who had numbers below mine get the exact some scholarship, so they haven't really changed from this to last year. I can almost guarantee it will be the best offer from any comparable school. Every person I talked to got a larger scholarship than anything even remotely close to a school of this quality. Lots of schools are cutting back scholarships, but Indiana has been increasing theirs.

2. Mine said I just need to stay in the top half. I feel like any competent student should be able to do that. I have also heard that some who have talked to the school said that as long as they stay above an even lower amount, they will keep their scholarship (a GPA in the 2's. Very low.) I also heard that lots of the 2L's were able to keep their scholarships last year, despite being in the bottom half. The school didn't want to take away people's scholarships in this economic climate. Sounds like they got a stern warning or something. Of course, I have no idea if any of this is actually true, it's just what I've heard. I've never bothered to check, because if I'm not in the top half, I really have no business being in this school.

3. OCI, like every school, has been cut back dramatically. I'm not sure what type of jobs anyone has gotten so far, but I know it is not good. It seems like the top part of the class is getting employed, but it's not easy. I'm not sure what level of this exists outside of this school, but this seems typical of what has been happening.
