I'm asking because I'm from the Detroit area, would want to secure a job here, and have family that I'd rather not leave here. Unfortunately, didn't have the stats for Michigan, but I'd ideally like to end up there. Definitely wouldn't mind being "stuck" with Indiana though, as its a great school. I debated going to a lesser prestigious in-state school, but the money Indy offered coupled with its reputation was something I couldn't turn down.

I'm from Detroit and clawed my way back to Michigan. We can have a long, arduous PM session about it if you'd like. To answer your question briefly: Does Indiana place in Detroit? Yes. Does it place as well as MSU or Wayne? No.

But do you have better "fall back" options at Indiana? Yes.

I am also from the Detroit area, wondering the same thing. I would be ok with staying in INdiana for a couple years with the hopes of making it back to Detroit.

Regarding having a car, can anyone comment on the process of having your tags changed etc...? Is it required by Indiana? Is it expensive? Thanks!

Its not a dumb questions its really something all schools should give out, however the reality is that no one does. I don't have the list from last year anymore, and certainly would not post it on the forum for everyone to see regardless. Maybe someone with the list from last year can PM you.

Basically Any firm in Indy comes, also lots of firms in the Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, and various other midwest locations. A couple Big Chicago firms (Used to be more, hopefully a lot more come back next year) and a DC firm or two. its something around 30-40 firms i would guess? I don't remember exactly. Its a pre-select system (as opposed to lottery), so good grades or IP or a realllllly special resume would be necessary for interviews. From what i gathered the same people got a lot of interviews from pre-select.

I have no idea about how many got jobs via OCI since I'm not there anymore, (honestly only 25% got jobs here at UCLA), i would guess something like 10%-15%. I'll say this the amount that got DC or Chicago Big law is limited to a handful like 3 or 4 people. Anecdotally i know a few people who have decent interviews not through oci, but through mass mail and networking.

From what I've heard its pretty similar to the other Midwest school.

It seems like it wouldn't matter if a thousand firms came to OCI, if you don't have positive grades (or science background, special resume) no one's going to want to interview you anyway. Is that semi-accurate?

Generally speaking, why is it that schools don't want to publish a list of firms coming there, and why a person wouldn't want to disseminate than info if they had it?

Also not Indiana specific (necessarily): Is spring OCI a common sourced of 1L summer jobs? Just trying to read up on the subject, and it seems like resumes/cover letters have to be sent out well in advance of the spring.

well if one school discloses all the firms while others hide it, it just looks bad as far as recruiting. Especially when you get schools still reporting 2009 data to make it sound like half the class is getting market paying jobs through OCI. IU is actaully pretty open about OCI being a failure, i know BIll henderson is probably the most important prof when it comes to research in the legal profession field (i.e. he anytime there is a Economy and law article he's quoted).

As for the grades, with the pre-select program it allows firms to weed out lower ranked students. I actually like that system better then say the lottery system which UCLA used. I interviewed for a lot of jobs that I had no shot at, in fact a couple firms just told me straight up they don't take transfers.

That being said, Grades are the biggest factor, but there some people with lower ranked grades that still got a couple interviews. A great resume can open up some doors possibly, but from what i talked to friends that stayed at IU, it seemed like most of hte interviews went to those that were at teh top of the class.

Spring OCI is not really taht common for 1l Jobs. I know a couple people got firm jobs through it last year. One problem is that it starts in like Feb/march. If you are aiming for a Federal court job they are already taken by that point. I know last year I got my job about a month or two before spring OCI.
Now some of the higher ranked schools have a little bit for Spring OCI. But 90% of it is really diversity fellowships and programs. If you fit in the diversity categories then absolutely its a huge deal but if not then its a huge longshot to get anything through spring OCI.

I emailed updating my status and interest. I dunno if it mattered or not, but helped my sanity a little bit.

I'm not in the BLSA or Latino associations, but from an outsider's perspective, they seem pretty active and prominent.

Social life is really great, you can find law school people out everywhere on Kirkwood and the surrounding areas over the weekend, except for as you get really close to finals.

As for admissions, I just called the office once or twice over a few months, no big deal. The secretary told me my status when I asked.

To all those making a visit out, where are you guys planning to stay? The two hotels closest to campus are Mariott and Hilton and the Hilton seems to be already sold out for the ASW dates. There's a Holiday Inn and Comfort Inn a bit farther out (1.7 miles to be exact), are those pretty decent?

Just stayed at the Holiday Inn on my trip to Bloomington last week.

The hotel is pretty close, but you'll have to drive and fight for parking.

What's the best/cheapest way to get to campus from out of town... Flying/renting a car/driving/hotel seems quite pricey... especially for ASD
