Ummm...Osgood covered around 90 pages worth of cases in 6 days. Thank Jeebus he slowed down after his vacation and began to explain himself a little. The first 3 days he assigned 66 pages and made random historical comments. I now have to outline an entire chapter. Are there any outlines I can check out in the library? If someone can send me a PM with an Osgood outline for Criminal Law I'd really appreciate it. I literally have no idea how to start this. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated.

I'm pretty sure Dinner is new (finished her Ph.D. in 2012). So nobody would be able to comment on this.

Just because you haven't learned black letter law doesn't mean that you are screwed without it. I would definitely go to her office hours to get a feel for if you are getting the correct take-aways from class.

For example, I had Carfield (no longer teaching here) for property. She didn't spend much time at all on black-letter law because she just wasn't super interested in it. And a good answer on her exam didn't spend a lot of time on black letter law.

The answer, as always, is that it will depend.

I liked understanding property for black letter law, that said property is a class that definitely opens it self up to philosophical pontification, so make sure that when the exam comes around you can thrown down different theories of property rights and that you understand the constitutional implications of shit like the takings clause. That said, find out exactly how much emphasis she will place/test on that estates crap, as that is straight BLL and can be kind of tricky.

Just be glad (depending on your persuasion) that you aren't taking property with Osgood, that would probably feature weeks of discussion about William the Conqueror or something.

Actually, property with Osgood would've been awesome. Granted, I had Mandelker so my perspective is skewed, but at least Osgood would've made it interesting.

Had Dinner for property. Took a long time to get a perspective on where she was going, but I will say the syllabus is a good place to start outlining from. She can be too lenient in class with getting way off track, but her syllabus outlines what she thinks you should be learning. She's very smart and helpful both after class or in office hours. Several weeks in, when she realizes how far behind/off track you are, she'll crack down a little and maybe will put the objectives of each class on the board.

I think I used a cross between a Gilbert's supplement and an old outline from the SBA bank to get started.

She'll offer a midterm, which she went over in office hours individually last year. She provided model answers from the midterm too. Also, her final has a word limit, but was very fair and no surprises. I think it was two issue spotters and a policy question? It might have been one issue spotter, like five short answers and a policy question though. Must have blocked it out.

That's an option. It's certainly too early to outline. Some people waited to type their notes up until they got closer to fall break / thanksgiving. It can serve as a good review process once you've had enough material to actually be able to review.

But at this point just make sure you are still going to bar review and enjoying yourself while you can.

+1 to this. Some people do like to outline throughout the semester so that it is "up to date" each week, but I am one of the "some people" that fl0w talks about. My strategy 1L year was to read the cases and prepare for class, and then "re-learn" the material closer to finals time by outlining and using commercial supplements to, well, supplement the material. For me, the final outline is far less important than the process of learning during outlining, which is why I use it as my chief review strategy at the end of the semester. I see those 3-4 weeks of outlining and intense studying (now shortened to 1-2 weeks because I'm a 3LOL) as my chance to wrap my brain around the entire course and put the puzzle together.

Lots of ways to approach law school. Some people outline closer to the end. Some people outline throughout the semester. Some people don't even outline at all, and study using their own methods. There are many successful people in all of these camps. But whatever you choose, you should not let outlining consume your life at this point. Stay on top of your stuff, but have fun and enjoy the semester as well. Shit will hit the fan soon enough... no sense in making yourself miserable now.

At this point, just have fun. It doesn't really matter when you outline, as long as you get it done. If you put it off, you'll have outlined closer to the test, so you're more likely to remember it. If you do it too soon, you won't understand the big picture enough to outline.

I've outlined the night before an exam and did better than classes where I spent a month outlining, doing E&Es and reading supplements. Just do whatever you feel most comfortable with. Find a balance between slacking off and over-doing it, because psyching yourself out is just as much of a risk as not doing enough studying.

More than 10% get Biglaw. It's somewhere between 15 and 20%. It could possibly be higher in the coming years.

But "portability" is probably a figment of most people's imagination. Schools that place nationally draw a more national student body, so when students "return home," they're returning everywhere in the nation. Even if you go to a T14, your odds are much better in places where you have ties. If you don't have ties, you can still get something from networking.

Everywhere I've been networking, WUSTL has a good reputation. But our OCI ain't what it used to be, so you're more likely to have to network.

duno if you took his TM class but McManis is tough. He's a good teacher, but he expects a hell of a lot.

Every point that he makes in class, you're going to want to commit that to memory come exam time. In addition to him expecting you to be very prepared for class, you also have to take very good notes on his salient points during class to perform well on the final.

Never forget to consult the statute first before looking at what a case says. Don't suffer from what he calls "common law-itis"
