Here are the options for classes to visit:
Contracts, M-Th, 8:45 a.m.
Civil Procedure, W-F, 12:55 p.m.
Contracts, T-F, 1:15 p.m.
Torts, M-Th, 3:25 p.m.

Can anyone recommend which class? I certainly don't have a preference, but was hoping to see one of the professors you guys are always saying great things about.

THANKS SO MUCH!

ps- Coming from Atlanta, we aren't exactly used to snow. I'm assuming snow boots, etc, are in order?
You can bring some to be safe, but there might not be that much snow on the ground (Bloomington gets an inch or two here and there but typically nothing crazy). Just make sure your soles have good traction so you don't slip.
The girl from the "What I Wore" blog is in Bloomington: http://whatiwore.tumblr.com/

Congrats on the acceptance!

Those are first semester classes. 2nd semester classes are Property, Legal Prof, and Con Law.

My recommendation would probably be David Williams (i know there was talk a few pages back pro and con about him) but regardless if you like him or not he is sort of the traditional socratic prof, very smart, and an interesting speaker.

If you want something a little different I recommend Prof Steele in Legal professions, the guy is a former hiring partner at Fenwick, fired Tucker Max, and has a myriad of stories and anecdotes about the real legal world.

That doesn't make any sense. Those are all first semester classes.

Oh. Those are the classes offered on the website at IU- I suppose they haven't updated it yet? Well, then, I'm not sure what classes are available to visit.....

Just ask them what is available.
There have been a few people visiting in Williams' Con Law.

I thought I'd share that I attended the DC alum/admitted students dinner last night and had a great time. The law school reps and DC alums were all extremely nice and had some great insights. My decision will definitely be more informed now and I'm really looking forward to the spring visit day. If anyone gets invited to meet some alums in your area I definitely recommend going.

Does anyone have any supplement recommendations, outlines or other tips for S. Williams, Conkle and Steele?

I don't think you need a supplement in Steele, but I did use a commercial outline. Really the model rules and notes are basically an outline. On his exam he give you points if you cite to a note in the model rules so really going through and outlining what is relevant there can be helpful.

Also he has a blog, and occasionally posts issue spots or different insight into PR. Just really pay attention to the hypo's in class (im assuming he still does them) he basically tests on that stuff.

I know a lot of people sort of treated the class as not substantive and didn't really study for it. Definitely do not do that.

After a recent visit, I have to say that I'm pretty excited about the possibility of attending. My biggest concern was hiring, and they definitely satisfied my curiosity on the subject. Also, they were more honest schools. Basically, the said OCI was busto and that they didn't see the model recovering for them any time soon. Instead of trying to leverage a dying system, they were working on hiring through other routes. They'd set up private dinners with students and alumni in other cities, they put you directly in contact with alumni in a chosen market, and they worked to insure that all students got legal experience their 1L summer.

Maybe other schools are doing similar things, but it was articulated very well at IU and no one ever once tried to give me the "Well, you're going to be a lawyer, which means you're going to have tons of options. You could even just start working for yourself if you wanted to."

There was a discussion started in another thread that I wanted to bring over here to some answers. If a student is from the NY region and goes to IU, what are job prospects coming out of IU like when going back to NY? While there aren't many IU grads working in NY, it seems like a lot of them aren't from that region and aren't interested in working there, so there's a certain self-selection bias.

We should miss the worst of it, but the roads might be really icy. Probably more of an effect on those trying to fly into Indy.

As for which classes to visit, definitely depends a lot on the professor, but I would say Con Law is one that you could step into and have a good time despite not having the benefit of being there the whole semester. Property is not this way. Legal Professions is somewhere in the middle. Also, I've never heard of anyone doing this, but I don't see why visits have to be confined to 1L classes. There are probably other bar courses that would be just fine to visit. Additionally, many of my more advanced classes are (counterintuitively) more accessible to non-law students than the basic courses since they talk about higher level policy issues. You could probably check out the course listings (posted somewhere online) and request to sit in on a class whose focus is of interest to you.

Finally, Wednesdays and Thursdays are pretty fun nights for a lot of us who have no or less important classes on Thursdays and Fridays. I'm sure you can find a lot of law students to talk to on either of these nights at a local bar: Hoosier Knights.

P.S. Congrats to everyone who has been accepted.

Yep, Hoosier Knights and Nick's. Go there on a weekend or near-weekend night and just ask around, you'll definitely find some law students, especially at HK. As for restaurants... You'll see plenty right on Kirkwood, where those bars are. I recommend trying some of the asian/indian/other restaurants on 4th street, which is right by the law school, you can't miss it. My personal favorite is Anyetsang's Little Tibet Restaurant on 4th.

Great, thanks for all the tips.

I just spoke with the admissions dept and scheduled a visit for Con Law on Thursday. She said they will almost certainly be closed tomorrow due to weather, but will definitely be open Thursday. We are braving the weather and driving- I think it's mostly just wet since we are coming from Atlanta. I'm glad now we are driving and not trying to fly into Indianapolis! Any advice for good places for dinner, etc, Thursday night? Coming from school in Athens, Ga (UGA), we are used to a restaurant and bar scene downtown- any particular places for a Thursday night?

Thanks for everyone's help!

I always found Nick's way too much of an undergrad scene for me. Sure, lots of law school groups had their outings there, but at least my circle of friends preferred Irish Lion or Crazy Horse as it was quieter, one could always get a booth, and you generally didn't have to deal with the idiot 21yos who can't hold their liquor.

Temperatures approached 65 here, as well, if you have a very lenient definition of "approached".

Also, I hate you Kings. I hate how warm you are. (Enjoy Cali, I get bitter the deeper we get into winter).

Spring is close, very close. Once the ice cube, formerly called my car thaws, it will be Spring!

Thought you'd appreciate it haha.

Did they cancel any class? I thought I read some fb status about classes cancelled.

You know its funny, when I talked to Shreve last year about transferring he guarantee'd that the weather would be better this year then last year. I really didn't think last year was that bad.

They canceled two half days, back to back, to ensure everyone still has to travel to school.

The weather is worse this year.

Yea, they cancelled the very end of the afternoon on one day, and then the morning of the next day.
And they waited too long to cancel the morning too.

I just realized that must have been you in the back today. Good thing you weren't set up for yesterdays Con Law.
Did somebody give you good recommendations?

What's the transfer situation like at IU? Is the school as a whole pretty cooperative with the process?

Im waiting to hear back from IUB, but if they give me a nice scholarship Im going to just go.

The thing is, I cannot stand the midwest. Im an east coast/southern girl and thats where I want to end up. I see from the website that their second largest alumni base in in DC, followed by NYC in 3rd. So what are the chances of me not ending up in the midwest and lucking out enough to land back on the East Coast?

Similar question - I'm seriously considering IUb with their huge scholarship but I am completely lost on where IUb grads end up / what they do. Obviously they arent snagging up biglaw jobs all over but what are some of the more common routes ? Right now it seems like if I were to throw a dart at the midwest it would be similar to predicting where I would end up coming out of IU. I have no ties to any city in the midwest.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
