I loved Cohen's PR class but don't know how it compares with others in terms of difficulty. He seems to be sort of hit-or-miss with different students, but I thought he was awesome.Cavalier wrote:PR is always required. The seminar is basically just there if you need an extra credit. PR is kind of boring, it can be easy or hard depending on the professor. Cohen is particularly difficult. No reason to get it out of the way now since it's offered two or three times per semester.plum wrote:what are all these seminars in ethical values? do we have to take PR if we end up taking one of those? also, anyone here taken PR...how awful is it, will i want to killself or is it an easy class that is worth getting out of the way?

I wasn't really interested in securities fraud, which was basically the entire course. Plus his exams are ridiculously hard (although I knew what to expect).

He did give 7 A+s last semester though, so maybe the ridiculously hard exams can be worth it? (I'm sure those were balanced out by low grades as well, but I would guess those mostly went to checked-out 3Ls.) Plus, as you know, he posts several previous exams with outlines of model answers. Just want 1Ls to hear both sides of the story, haha : )

Re: UVA 2L taking questions
Yeah, he loves to give out a large number of A+s and Cs and C+s. I think he's a good professor to take if you're willing to work hard and trying to maximize your GPA (he's teaching Agency and Partnership next semester, for anyone who's interested), but it might be more trouble than it's worth. I'll reserve a final judgment on his PR class until I receive my grade (if they ever get posted).

Haha, grades will never be posted. None. Ever. Judgment permanently reserved.

If he stays on pace all the grades will go up as A's, everyone will be elated, but no one will want to brag about it so they will just stay content for a few days. Then we'll get the "there was a minor error" e-mail. Then we'll get the e-mail fixing the error in the "there was a minor error" e-mail. At that point, people will realize they were burned and take up pitchforks.omg wrote:I love this. Cary Bennett watch 2K11.

Re: UVA 2L taking questions
So as far as 1L summer jobs.. how does that work? I looked through the common 0L questions and I'll be honest there wasn't a ton of answers. I found maybe one or two posts that gave some helpful advice while the vast majority said "don't worry about doing anything now." I'm not necessarily worried about doing any actual work now (although I'm not averse to it) as much as I'm wondering how the process works. Especially since I'm coming straight out of undergrad so I feel I really need to improve my resume over 1L summer.
Generally is the idea that you take your resume and apply at as many law firms that hire 1Ls in a geographical area that you wish to practice or where you have some place to stay? What input is involved from UVA - if any - in this situation, since 1Ls can't talk to career services until November? I'd expect them to be far more focused on you guys then 1Ls TBH.
Anyway, its more curiosity then anything else I suppose. One post did say to look through the NALP and make a list of firms that hire 1Ls in the area you want to apply, if you want to get a head start.

Thanks. Extremely enlightening post about 1L summer. Just to be clear your post is saying that in general people formulate which places to put in applications in November (or in the long game Feb/March). How do you find these places? Generally through UVA?

Re: UVA 2L taking questions
I wish I'd done research as a 0L so I didn't have to worry about it during the school year. Career Services won't help you until Nov. 1, and by then you're deep into the semester and trying to plow through everything. I ended up with a pretty good (unpaid) 1L summer internship I applied for in February off the job listings Career Services has.Heat wrote:Thanks. Extremely enlightening post about 1L summer. The one thing I'll tell you is that there are very few 1L summer internships out there (it's something that got cut back on a lot due to the economy) and you should not count on finding a paid internship. It doesn't matter in the long run, it won't be held against you that you didn't work for a law firm during 1L summer, and to keep your options open you should be prepared to apply for every PI position you'd be interested in, from the most prestigious on down, in areas where you could reasonably afford to live (read: wherever your parents/family/friends with spare couches are). Don't count on getting a PILA grant, they're pretty competitive and not everyone gets one, but if you try for one and do get one then it'll help with your 1L summer expenses.
If you want something to read as a 0L, I tend to discourage reading of E&Es and things, but one thing I will definitely say is that you should get and read Guerilla Tactics to Getting the Legal Job of Your Dreams. There are older and newer editions, try to make sure you're buying the newest one out there.

As ridiculous as it is, it's tough to mess with someone who still somehow has control of our grades.Cavalier wrote:If nothing posts today, we need to take drastic measures, such as creation of a "Fire Cary Bennett" Facebook group.

Re: UVA 2L taking questions
I will definitely pick up the book, thanks for the advice. One more question, hopefully I'm not being too annoying while everyone is waiting for their grades. I know there are rules about not talking to potential employers until December 1st but is that only for NALP member firms (wording?)? I mean say I could begin to work connections already at a firm (or at least inquire as to whether they hire 1Ls) that isn't on their registry or a public office that I know hires 1Ls am I obligated to refrain from doing so?
I tried to look this up myself on the UVA career services site but I apparently need some web access that I'm pretty sure I don't have to access almost anything.
