Has anyone graduated from HLS and then worked for google instead of a big law firm?

Yeah, we actually had counsel from google come in and talk to my section. He knows our section leader personally (Singer) and was happy to discuss working for google and internship opportunities. He was from the NY office -- I'm not sure where Google's home office is.

Re: Ask a Harvard 1L Questions
Wow this is exactly what I want to do with my life... although probably after paying off loans in big law. Is doing an internship something someone would do after 1L or 2L, most likely? Did they talk about what sort of thing counsel tends to do versus what gets farmed off to law firms?nahumya wrote:yme16 wrote:Has anyone graduated from HLS and then worked for google instead of a big law firm?

You'd have a better chance during 2L.Haribo wrote:Wow this is exactly what I want to do with my life... although probably after paying off loans in big law. He talked more about the concept of copyrights and how they apply to google's huge business umbrella. It's pretty clear that no LS would land you a job as staff counsel (and if they do, I wouldn't suggest taking it). Sounds like they don't 'farm off' much because there aren't too many lawyers out there who are great with copyright law and the internet.

What do 1Ls have the option of doing during the winter term? Every clinic is reserved to 2Ls and/or 3Ls.

I think our only option is to take that new Problems class in an intensive style. I could be wrong, but that's the feeling I was getting from the ol' big red binder.

Parking situation? Is parking expensive, available, etc.? Do people have cars or is it all public transport?

Parking is expensive. Most people don't have cars but I do. If you really want a car, your best bet is finding an apartment that comes with a parking space.calkx09 wrote:Parking situation? Is parking expensive, available, etc.? Do people have cars or is it all public transport?
I have no clue about the first question and no one else I've talked to seems to either.Objection wrote:How do latin honors work now with the new grading system?

Re: Ask a Harvard 1L Questions
dude, do not bring a car. the only thing you can really use it for is to go to trader joe's or target, and even then you risk getting lost on the way. parking is impossible unless you have a spot or a lot. just not worth it. you can walk anywhere anyway.calkx09 wrote:Parking situation? btw, i just stumbled on this board, i'm a harvard 1l and can answer some questions. i'll second brokendowncar...harvard is awesome.

Re: Ask a Harvard 1L Questions
hi there harvard iLs. two questions.. has the question about the number of LPs given out been resolved? the other harvard thread was reporting that it's something like 20% which seems really uncool.
And secondly, i thought the paid 3rd year of tuition is in addition to any Harvard aid you are receiving? i read something on here that it might actually decrease the amount of aid you get, thus making it much less of a financial bonus than it seems??

Re: Ask a Harvard 1L Questions
i have no idea how many LPs were given out. frankly, the consensus is that it's really bad form to actually talk about your grades, so i don't know anything other than what i got. i would be shocked to my very core if it was 20% though. there was an anonymous grade survey which i think ended up pretty bogus, but if it was even slightly close to the mark LPs are like 10%.Pumpkin wrote:hi there harvard iLs. two questions.. has the question about the number of LPs given out been resolved? the other harvard thread was reporting that it's something like 20% which seems really uncool.

as far as the 3rd year of tuition, i know they explained it to us in a way that made it seem like it didn't really matter if it decreased your aid or not. it's pretty unlikely that you're going to be getting a grant that's bigger than tuition unless you're destitute--seriously destitute, because i have no money and didn't get anywhere near a full tuition grant. but i think they do take the tuition waiver into account when computing financial aid. so yeah, maybe in absolute terms it's less of a bonus than it seems if you're already getting a grant to cover part of your tuition (e.g., the real value is $30K rather than $45K). but it doesn't seem like that should really matter.

Re: Ask a Harvard 1L Questions
I don't know if this is typical at other schools or not but...
Does HLS provide access to previous exams with model answers? I found the online exam database, but they are just the questions. It would be probably be even more helpful to see model answers.
(Again, I don't know if any school does this, so if not, disregard).
And no, I'm not gunning already! I just had never seen what a law school exam looked like so I decided to sneak a peak.

1. most of my professors posted previous exams and model answers
2. if you join fedsoc or acs (big conservative and big liberal law school group, respectively), they both have huge exam banks with answers, outlines, etc. i hear fedsoc's is better, but i refuse to check on principle.
also, dude, you are totally gunning already. cool your jets.
