Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
How many URM students do you have there? I'm used to being the only black person in my classes and everywhere else it town, but I'm just wondering, if I get in, will I have some minority company

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
We have a small (well, our school is pretty small for starters) but fairly active bunch of minority student clubs, BLSA and LALSA are in particular VERY active and pro-active in supporting the law school community. I know BLSA and NALSA are doing some Moot Court competition with the 1Ls... The website says about 30% of the class are minorities, I'd say that's about right...I just went through our facbeook and tried to look up how many students in our class were minorities: I'd peg it at something like ~9 African-Americans, ~26 Asian kids (counting the halfies), 2 people with Native American ancestry...okay, now I'm tired. Back to memo madness.

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
Our section as 34 ppl... I think its like
2 Native American
3 African American
3 Hispanic American,
4 Asian American
And the rest...So, I would put our section just above the 30% the website says.

Section A is where uncool kids think they are cool.
Section B is where cool kids know that they are cool.
End of discussion!

joon, we are trying to help potential future students... if your interest in helping resembles your interest in being friends with the classmates you already have, it might be best if you poke your head in on this thread as often as you do at the Big Red Barn... thanks

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
you probably can, but I don't think you necessarily have to... your willingness to stay in Ithaca for 3 more years may be a reasonable substitute for the kind of info they look for in those addenda... did you at least fill out the 3 lines? If not, you might want to play it safe and send something in...

If you are worried, go see Jane Levy at Career Services in Barnes Hall and ask to see the action report from last year. Cornell accepted 70 Cornell UG's total (obviously far fewer matriculated) with average numbers very, very comfortably below the median last year (something like 3.3/162). Obviously that is ever so slightly skewed by URM's, but you get the point.
And as someone else said, I applaud your resilience for wanting to stay in Ithaca for 7 straight years...

haha win. But yeah, I don't think that sending an addendum will help your chances much more, unless you feel like it would. In other words, if you really have something significant to say in an addendum, then say it. Who cares that it's delayed? Better late than never. Alternatively, if you'd just be grabbing at straws anyway, then it's probably not worth (considering it'd be delayed).zeetraveler wrote:ha, thanks for the vague but semi-assuring response. Maybe just talk to an admissions committee member, since you're already on campus? Just stop on by. Couldn't hurt.
And when you mentioned medians, were you talking about last year's medians? They haven't released 2011's, have they?

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
Actually, I was slightly wrong trying to recall it from a few months ago when i first saw it. The exact #'s were 70 admitted at 166.2/3.61, 16 matriculated at 162.7/3.57. Sorry for any shock...
The admitted #'s are a little bit low, but it is the matrics that are surprisingly low. I guess it represents self-selection; a lot of Cornell UG's probably reach for Cornell, and Cornell helps them out.
Either way, as a Cornell student at the medians you should be pretty confident in a good result.

hmmmm.... if one assumes that most of the rest of those 54 went to higher-ranked schools, does this lend credence to a non-HYP ivy boost theory?

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
I'm wondering now if I ever see you law schoolers on-campus, or if you're holed up in the library.
I'm an undergrad here currently, I'll be applying next year for law, and on Friday I'm taking a guiding tour of the law school with our UG law club (PLUS). Is there anything in particular I should pay attention to, be mindful of, or ask questions about?
Also, there's a big push on campus to get an internship over summer, but I plan to take the June LSAT. Would I be better off spending the summer studying, or both getting a FT internship and studying nights? Thanks!

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
I would take the June LSAT and do what you like as far as getting a job-- your LSAT score is more important to get into law school in my opinion than a summer job. (hopefully you can find something productive to add to your resume during the summer even if its not a FT job)
I waited till October to take the LSAT and I wish I would have taken it earlier. That way, if you screw it up you can retake, and if you do well-- you can get your apps out in September as early as possible.

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
Especially if you are coming straight from UG, I'd say work as little as possible. Studying for the LSAT can be intense enough, at least a few hours a day. Considering that you won't have a free summer again any time soon, I'd take it as easy as possible. In my case, I worked about five to ten hours a week tutoring, and then just hung out and did what I wanted.

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
anyone know how generous cornell's financial aid dept. is to soft splitters, especially when lots of LSAT scores are involved (e.g. 3.5/162/169/177)?

Dunno. They seem to be pretty generous overall though. The average grant is five digits.

3.5/177 should be just fine in the generosity dept....
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
