in a lot of my classes we're assigned readings from the UCC or the FRCP and i see people are taking notes on it. Is this stuff we are expected to know or can we skim this and just see how it's been applied in the cases?

you're going to need to know the FRCP, but no need to go crazy memorizing it right now. You'll understand it more in depth when you study those topics in depth - i.e. rule 23 when you learn all about class actions, etc.

Are you perhaps thinking of the "gunner cave," which is the aptly nicknamed Furman study room that's hidden behind the library? It's called the cave because it has no windows, and gunner because people will glare at you if you even whisper. Most people I know call the area that you described "the pit."

I'm wondering about how strictly the guest policy is enforced in the law school dorms. It seems like based on the policy law students would not be able to bring home a guest for a weekend night if they hadn't registered the person during business hours. Is this really the case?

I had a friend who bought one for 1L. He ended up having a shit ton of $ left on it because he found himself eating with other people often in the neighborhood. I'd recommend not to get one cuz theres so many other options. Also, you're going to want to be lazy and seamless.

No you only need to register your guest if they are there for a long stretch of time or if you need them to get into the building without you. Otherwise they can get in with you.

Yeah it's not a big deal at all, unless you want them to be able to get in without you.

Hey y'all, thanks for doing this, and good to see this thread revived now that DLS' have started to come out. A few pages back (in May), there was talk of the main gym getting renovated but that it wouldn't be ready until 2020. What is the word on that now? Thanks

Dear Students,

Although the Coles Sports Center will close for construction on January 22, a brand-new gym will open at 404 Lafayette Street on January 25, the same day Spring 2016 classes begin. This new location will feature the latest strength training and cardio equipment, as well as studios for dance and yoga — all in a fully air-conditioned, modern space.

Already posted this question more generally, but I figured NYU students might have a more specific answer. I am planning (hoping) to get married during the summer after 1L. It will be a very small affair (so planning will be minimal, as weddings go), and we'll probably want a week for it, as it will be out of town. Ideally we wanted to do it toward the end of summer, but certainly we will have to set dates before I am sure of my summer position. If we were to plan to do it the week before OCI (which seems to start in early-mid August?), is that doable? Will I have the flexibility to set an end date with my employer that allows me to have that week free? Would it be easier for me to do this at the beginning of the summer (after exams, before summer job)? Thanks in advance for any input.

I also know people who had weeks off before interviews. So you might not know until you get your position, which won't be until spring semester. So you will need to make accommodations upfront during the hiring process and who knows how that will go. As to doing it after classes, the journal write-on will take place not long after classes end (I think a week break, then two weeks to complete it). I would personally not wanted to have fit a significant personal event into that window of time--it was stressful enough as it was.

Not to say that your plans aren't doable, but I honestly didn't feel like I got any real time off from the start of 1L until winter break as a 2L. It never really stopped once it got going.

Thanks for the feedback. Yeah, totally overlooked the journal write-on. Sounds like the best idea is to do it the week before EIW and just hope that won't limit my employment opportunities. Not the greatest option but hopefully employers will be somewhat sympathetic to a conflict with this significance. Does this sound about right?

Probably your only option, though I would make sure and confirm the EIW dates (may not even be scheduled yet), because it gets earlier and earlier just about every year. Beyond that make sure you put some time during the summer into interview practice and whatever firm research you want to do. Best of luck.

I have a question about 1l summer funding. It says on the NYU website that 1ls get $4500 for all public interest and government unpaid work. Does this extend to judicial internships?
