Re: The BigLaw hate buffet
I had a cunning deduction about whose alt that might be based on a previous "V15 is not a thing" shtick.
Then I read the poster's name and realized I'm not that cunning.

I'm sure Paul Weiss is all it's cracked up to be. 'Tis why the Yalies are flocking in droves. Otherwise they'd be at SCOTUS, right?

At some point do we have to accept biglaw is just a symptom of the disease that is people attracted to the legal profession?

I love shouting "WE DID THIS TO OURSELVES [paralegal]. WE CHOSE THIS." when I run into one of the abused paralegals I work with at stupid hours.
Then we look at each other sadly and get back to work

Were the paras both women? If so, then that seems like typical boy's club bullshit.

this was such an issue at my firm a few years back that they intentionally hired a fat and ugly female paralegal for a particular team

So was it a coincidence in both situations the paralegal had to leave or are entry-level attorneys actually more valued than someone else at the firm?IAFG wrote:two great female paras. if you date a colleague one of you has to quit.MarkinKansasCity wrote:Or one of each?Biglaw_Associate_V20 wrote:

an atty salary is more valuable to a couple than a para's, and also it's easier for the para to get a new gig in townKD35 wrote:So was it a coincidence in both situations the paralegal had to leave or are entry-level attorneys actually more valued than someone else at the firm?IAFG wrote:two great female paras. if you date a colleague one of you has to quit.MarkinKansasCity wrote:Or one of each?Biglaw_Associate_V20 wrote:

Re: The BigLaw hate buffet
This will be totally stream of consciousness so bear with me or skip it. I'm tired because I'm in the middle (end? I don't know.) of a hellish week (two weeks? I've lost track), but I'll agree with most of what's said here. The time thing sucks: I didn't know that I was going to bill ~100 hours this week until I was already deep into it. I haven't seen my wife much, I missed a family event, and I haven't slept much. The timing can suck. The lack of control really does.
I generally like the work, though. I do M&A and I like seeing how different deals are structured, what's important to different clients/targets, overcoming various obstacles and etc. The high level stuff. When you can see it, this type of work can be interesting. You can't see it very often, though: Mostly it's bracket searches and non-fillable SEC filing forms, computer crashes and secretaries who accidentally shuffle documents, dating and re-dating docs because the parties decided not to sign. That stuff sucks, but I don't talk about that when I make small talk with my friends when I stumble into a bar after a crazy day.
When I have a moment away from the job, when my phone is dormant (it's never off, but sometimes there are stretches where no one emails or calls) and I have a minute to think about it; I'm pretty happy. The hours aren't bad all the time, I just bought a new car, moved to a nicer place, eat at good restaurants, get to take my friends out on the firm dime for "business development." I worry about money because we all worry about money, but I know that I don't need to worry about paying bills or buying shit I want or my wife wants or whether we can afford to go on a trip (if I can get around to scheduling one). The money is good.
It's not a perfect life style--and the lack of control over your time really isn't fun -- but it pays well, it can be interesting, and there are various perks here that I wouldn't have at other jobs. Am I going to make a career out of biglaw? I'm not deep enough in to know. Right now the people I work for generally respect my time (if I had a vacation planned or a funeral or whatever, I wouldn't get any grief for briefing a new associate and leaving the office--but maybe that also says something about how much we junior associates are valued...) and I generally like the work. There are clearly drawbacks and negatives but, so far, at least for me, they're worth it.
End stream of consciousness. Back to work.

A search of TLS shows that you can still bill a low amount of hours and get away with it for a couple years.
Why not work hard for a year or two (depending on your loans) to pay down most of your loans, then bill 2200 or whatever and just make your life easier until you're either shown the door 2-4 years later (which means you already made it 4-6 years) or you find a new job?
