This is really accurate. You really can't know whether or not you'll be top 10% or median. I would also argue that the method of preparation doesn't matter as much as the rest of this answer suggests. It really depends on your profs. If you tried to follow the method below with my property professor, you would not end up in a good place. However, this method would have been fine for torts.

I also wouldn't suggest to a student not reading the cases. That is a good way to end up very confused halfway through your first semester. The advice that I got appreciated the most and that worked best for me where I used it is: read the cases and otherwise take it easy for the first part of them semester, once you get about 1/2 to 2/3 through start outlining and reviewing a supplement. Take practice tests and trade them with a friend.
portaprokoss wrote:What it takes to get an A differs from person to person. For me, I skim a day's readings for a class in 5-10 min. then read and outline from supplements and do many many multiple choice and short answer questions. I look like a total, insolent, incompetent, slacker moron whenever I get called on because I don't know the facts of the case, but come test-time I am more prepared than most. I skip class if going will mean I'm not well rested and in some classes I stop reading anything but supplements after 2 weeks. I don't use past outlines because I've yet to come across a good one--the value in an outline is making it yourself. If I could go back in a time machine I would do this:

Don't read Getting to Maybe or LEEWS, but use How to do Your Best on Law School Exams instead. Then buy a CD lecture for one class you'll have first semester--use Civ. Pro (Freer), Torts (Finz), Crim (Dressler), or Con Law (Che)--and the corresponding E&E. Do the lectures and the E&E topic by topic and make an outline using the "How to do Your Best on Law School Exams" method. After you finish the CD, E&E, & outline, take 2 or 3 timed practice tests w/ model answers and compare what you have.

The value wouldn't be substantive knowledge, but a taste of what the semester and the first-year experience will be like. What separates the top-10% is time management. I believe that doing this exercise will help you realize that 99% of what the teacher says in class and 99% of what you read out of your casebook is irrelevant, which is the secret to success that we all slowly learn over our first year. Realizing this helps you tune out the BS and focus on what really matters.
I think the above is way over preparing during the summer and way under-preparing during the school year. But again, YMMV.

Anyone think they know the best way to handle having an SO/non student friend in town that wants to go to games with you? Should I buy season tickets for myself and pick up tickets from other law students when I can and sell when I can't? It seem the simplest but how easy is it to get seats next to each other? I assume seating is by section, not individual seat.

Sorry if any answers (esp seating arrangement) is obvious. My UG had no football team so I'm a pretty big newb to all this.
It's usually pretty easy to just get them separate student tickets and have them move over to you during games. You have to go into the stadium based on your ticket's section, but afterwards students move around.

This. People will be selling them on LawOpen. You will also need to borrow someone's MCard so that you don't have to pay to validate the ticket. They just have to look remotely (and by remotely, I mean like, the same gender) like the person you are trying to get into the game. You can ususally make back the price of your entire season ticket by selling a few of the big games (MSU).

This might have been asked before but I can't find it with the search function...Do you guys think it's doable to still have fun but live a bit of a distance (3-4 miles) from campus?

I'm getting into the housing hunt pretty late but have stumbled upon this great deal that has nearly everything I'm looking for. Cheap, plenty of space, pet friendly, furnished, backyard and garage, 9 month lease. But, it's about a 35 minute bus ride to the law school or 10 minute drive. I wouldn't mind driving everyday - but a 2 wheel drive car, Midwestern winters and college drivers on narrow streets do not mix.

Any advice wold be helpful.

We live about that far from campus. Still have fun. We have kids, though, so the fun was already diminished.

Are the buds dank in Ann Arbor and is it easy to get a medical card to purchase from a dispensary?

If you're south of campus, you can drive to the commuter lot and take a bus from there, which is what I did. It wasn't bad. It kind of sucks being a little removed for the social stuff, but if you want a lot of amenities, you can't afford to be picky this late in the game (plus, it's only for one year). If you want to look on google maps to see if the commuter lot is do-able from where th place is, the commuter lot is on South State Street fairly close to where it crosses Eisenhower).

FYI, having a garage is the greatest thing ever in Ann Arbor during the winter, so I can see why the place would be tempting despite the distance. So sad I'm not going to have it again this year :(.

Fucking medical marijuana laws in Michigan suck for the State. Ann Arbor is known for the pot, though. I'm sure getting a medical marijuana card isn't hard.

It is only a $25 citation (like a traffic ticket) for under an ounce in Ann Arbor or something so probably not worth even worth bothering with. People go around walking the street and smoking.

If I read facebook correctly, someone who is a summer starter is going T6 in the fall.

This is true. She decided to go to U Chi.

Does this mean she's dropping out midway or finishing up the summer program? I'm worried about the sort of backlash I'll face.
She dropped out immediately to get a refund. From what I heard, Dean Z seemed to be a bit upset about it.

And rightly so. Who gets 3 weeks into the semester only to leave for another school? Mind you, I love Michigan and am biased, but I just don't see the advantage of going to Chicago after already having started at Michigan. The benefits of the Summer Start outweigh any additional perceived, or actual, benefit of going to UChi. Graduating a semester early and being able to potentially study for, and pass, more than one Bar exam, having an extra semester of coursework (and grades) when applying for paid 1L summer jobs, etc..., are huge benefits. Plus, Dean Z seems to take a lot of time personally selecting each applicant, so she has every right to be upset about someone who accepted leaving after school has already started.

Well, damn. That is harsh and very inconsiderate.

If she knew she wanted to go to another school more than Michigan, then why not just start in the fall to give herself an extra few months to get off some WLs?

The sole reason why I didn't do the summer start is because I wanted to keep my options open with WLs - mostly with Stanford (although I too got into U Chi off the wl).

If I have absolutely nothing to do this summer, and want to get a head start on some reading, what books or articles do you recommend I look at? Where can I find the required reading for either summer or fall starters? Thanks!

I wouldn't bother really but the book lists will be on Wolverine Access when they put them up. You might not be placed in a section yet though. If you are going to read something just read something law related that looks interesting plus one or two 1L prep books. I'm not sure the 1L prep books help but I guess they don't hurt.

So I stumbled upon this thread:http://www.top-law-schools.com/forums/v ... 4&t=187337. It only really discusses Columbia and NYU in detail. Does Michigan release this kind of OCI data to students? If so, is there any chance that can be shared? Sorry if this can be found elsewhere--the search function didn't yield much for me.

I know they gave us a survey with class registration that asked what we were doing for the summer, but I don't think they ever gave out the results.

On another note, if any rising 2L's could send me a quick list of firms coming this year, I'd appreciate it. I have zero plans to do OCI again (and 3L OCI is basically just full of the very, very top firms or gov't), but I'm curious about a couple of things -- especially since they said the number of firms is up from last year.

Nevermind, I think I found where 2011 OCI stats should be soon (hopefully). Here is 2010 OCI data I think: http://www.law.umich.edu/careers/classs ... stats.aspx. Thanks anyway though!

Edited for grammar/clarity.

Finalizing my loans and just wanted an opinion on private vs. gradplus. My bank is offering a variable private loan for as low as 4.75%, and expressly stated that rates are held until 2014. Their fixed rate is at 7.8% at the moment, too. Also, I'd be able to switch from variable to fixed (if variable rates rise and fixed ends up being lower) after graduation with their 'consolidation' program (which comes with no penalties or fees). With gradplus at 7.9%, it sounds like this variable 4.75% rate is worth it. And I can defer for up to 5 years (though I only plan to defer for 3). Any thoughts or disadvantages of private loans that I don't know?

Thanks

Private loans aren't eligible for LRAP, while gradplus are.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
