Chicago is offering somewhat comparable $ to Michigan. I would 100% commit to Michigan if it was the smarter financial decision, but at the moment it's not. And Chicago's improved LRAP is the superior program for my career interests.
Pretty sure Michigan's LRAP is actually better than Chicago's, but I think if they're offering comparable $$ you have to go to Chicago.

As to the Michigan/NYU poster... figure out the COA difference and post it. $10k/year seems like a might be a close call, but with COL the difference may be bigger and Michigan may make more sense.

I've taken a liking to you and would be glad to split sweet tea of Torts with you, but honestly Chicago is sounding like fate for you. We'll miss you, but I think you know what you've gotta do. Unless mich seriously ups it I still think you should be leaning towards chi. Not just because of itself stronger rep for where you want to be and in general, but also because if their LRAP really is tailored to your career interests, any additional costs from living in Chicago could be offset by that (or that big law job you can land coming out of there).

But if you do give all that up to come with us, we'll have a feast with all the horchata, sweet tea and chicken in the land to celebrate.

I just hope I don't disappoint you all by lacking the obscene amount of fat I should have with my eating habits.

I have gone to a few lately and you'll find one of two things: Either upscale antique type shops or just plain garbage. There is a flea market in Tecumseh where you might be able to find some stuff but like I said it's mostly garbage and you have to be patient and look to find stuff.

Also, at the Eastern Market in Detroit (the farmer's market) there are people that sell furniture. I didn't look at the prices but I would assume it's probably not too expensive.

Just go to Ikea.

Michigan is showering URMs with $. Georgetown was trying to woo hyakku and thelawschoolproject with 120k, but Dean Z was having none of it. She matched hyakku's offer, and gave 75k to tlsp. Try to negotiate -- their URM yield has been disappointing, so you may be in for a treat.

Thanks for the pep talk. I REALLY want to go to Michigan, but the money aspect is pushing me (reluctantly) into the arms of Chicago. Since I'm off work today, I was going to drive to A2 today and look at pet-friendly apartments...but decided not to because I didn't want to break my heart further if I'm likely to chose Chicago in the end.

Which office (admissions, finaid, etc) have you guys emailed to negotiate scholarship$? Michigan's policy has said that they do not renegotiate $, and for me that has been the case so far...but I'm going to try it.

Excuse me what? It's cool that you're giving encouragement to cylon but that's not the case and I'd really appreciate you not going around telling people that. Mich didn't match my Georgetown aid or anything like that.

There is a reason I generally don't update things if I don't; it's usually because I'd prefer that information to stay private. This is the third time on TLS I've caught someone telling someone else that I've received aid or a position somewhere that I haven't in the past two months. I'd understand if you all were just doing due diligence and looking at my post history, but I haven't posted anything related to my Mich aid besides what they offered and asking if they negotiated. Please don't make stuff up.

We're cool though Kurst 8)

Edit: Also, PMed Cylon. Again though, as much as I'm down to watch BSG reruns over brews with you, can you really justify leaving Chi just for me (and Mich I suppose)?

^ Yikes and LOL. I feel you, bro. My +1 was simply to receiving a substantial amount of aid as well. I'm not sure about re-negotiating, but schools frequently break their policies on this. It's worth the shot. Just make sure you can honestly say that you will commit to come if you receive X in financial aid. I think they'll budge.

Good luck!

hyakku: just shot you an email. hope things are well.

There's no anger, sometimes my posts come off a little assholish since I don't filter my language, but me and Kurst are homies  . I just didn't want that to come back to me somehow and it's not even true, although I understand where he got it from from my post history. The last thing I wanted was Cylon feeling justifiably wronged at the fact that I somehow got nearly a full ride from Mich. by renegotiating and they wouldn't do the same when that isn't the case lol.

I just want to +1 what hyakku said. I have posted nothing about my the total of my scholarships from either Georgetown or Michigan on TLS, so I would really appreciate it if you didn't jump to conclusions about things. For one, inaccurate information doesn't benefit anyone and secondly I don't appreciate people pretending to know things about my situation. I don't have a problem answering questions, so if anyone has them they can pm me, otherwise please don't post stuff about me that you don't know to be accurate.

Thanks.

Do any of you know of a place that does hand car wash inside and out that isn't a detail shop where it's $50 to get it done?

If not, do you know any automatic car washes that do in and out for you?

As a summer starter, I felt that the writing competition was worse than finals. Was soul crushing...all to hear "thanks but no thanks".

Agreed. 11days of my life that I will never get back. 2/3rds of us will.hear something along the lines of: "Thanks, this was an incredibly gifted set of applicants and you should all feel good about the work you did. While we wish we could have sele ted every one of you, we couldn't. You didn't make the cut. There is no shame in crying, but I refer you to a zboulder that cares."

Can someone please give me the skinny on apartment complexes? I feel like I'm getting so many mixed messages that I can't sort it out. Search for Woodbury and you get people saying good things and bad, for example. Check out Yelp and it ain't pretty.

Woodbury. Does it suck? I know it's convenient, but what about the management and neighbors?

Harbor House. Does it suck? How's the walk to the park and ride on State Street? How's the walk in February?

Arbor Landings. Has anyone lived here? Is it feasible to bus to school from there? According to Google Maps, it's a 40 minute walk/bus, which seems a bit too long for 1L.

Are there other options I should consider? I know about Northwood and applied, but they don't tell you anything until late.

I feel qualified to answer this as I lived in Woodbury, now live in Harbor House, have a bestie who lives in Arbor Landings, and toured Northwood.

Woodbury- No, it doesn't suck. It's full of MBA/Law students. Some of the units DO suck, so ask to see yours before moving in/ask for pictures. The upgraded units are worth it, IMHO. Yes, there is a weird row of closets along a whole wall when you walk in, but it means tons of storage space. The maintenance people always came right away and sometimes gave me rides on their sweet golf car. They have a shuttle that will drop you off at the law school and the bus is really convenient. It's also bikeable. Kroger is right next door, which is convenient. It's also walkable to Dairy Queen in the summer, which was a plus for me. Yes, it's not as posh as the places I lived in the city I used to live in, but for student housing, it's fine. And more spacious than what you'll probably get downtown.

Harbor House- No, it doesn't suck. It's full of working professionals and for some strange reason, Dental School people. At least when people smile at you they have good teeth? The new gym is nice. The maintenance people are nice. They just painted all of the shared building walls lime green, which is strange. They have underground parking, which is really nice in the winter. It's a little further from Woodbury, but you can drive to the park and ride around the corner, take the bus and walk to the law school when it's nice (or take the bus and transfer when it's not, but takes longer), but for everything but the school, I think it's more convenient than Woodbury because of it's proximity to the mall, grocery stores/CVS, food.

Arbor Landings- These are about as nice as Harbor House. They are really far from the Law School and you'll hit traffic coming in in the mornings and going home at night. They have their own separate entries, which is nice. Fewer students live here...more young professional. It's not really in a super convenient part of town. You're close to an urgent care? Not that the grocery store/TJMaxx/Bagel Place isn't closh-ish, but not as close as the Woodbury/HH options.

Northwood- Don't do it, man. Seriously. Just don't. It's near North Campus and a pain to get to the law school on the buses. The interiors suck. Yes, it's cheap. Yes, the townhouses have space. But just...just don't!

Feel free to PM me. Keg can now jump in and tell you how far Harbor House is from everything and how it's super inconvenient. Really, it depends on lifestyle.

I know nothing is amazing, but the level of contradiction in what I read/hear is just staggering. I'm not a princess looking for a palace, but I don't want to be miserable, either. It's tough not knowing what you're getting yourself into. I used your list of housing links (thank you!), but some of the reviews out there make some of the places seem like festering holes.

Bananagram's poast was exactly what I was hoping for (thank you!). And hopefully it will help other housing seekers as well.

All right, carry on everyone!

FYI, Harbor House is in my comprehensive housing e-mail that I sent to everyone who asked for it (along with all of the other complexes within that same South Main/Eisenhower/State area). I lived next to there last year in Main Street Commons and just found it to be far from campus at times (especially when I wanted to go out to Main/South U and either had to drive or pay $$ for a cab).

In terms of just getting to and from the law school, living in that area is perfectly fine and is not difficult. The Busch's/CVS complex across the street is fantastic. It can just feel removed at times, which has its advantages and disadvantages.

Also, I know you're not a princess, and I personally recommended against both Arbor Landings (due to distance) and Northwood (due to distance and extreme grossness) in the Michigan 2015. I mentioned I heard Harbor House was fine and another poster (NOT me) said they toured it and did not like the unit they were showed. While I did not live at either Signature Club or Hidden Valley Club, I can tell you that neither are "holes" as my friends lived there. I really think in a lot of the complexes it depends on if you get a renovated unit or a non-renovated unit.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?

Now there's a charge.
Just kidding ... it's still FREE!
