You just grow it out for 3 years to symbolize the pain you are about to go through. And then you don't even need a wig to look like a real legal scholar:

Or, I dunno. Go to supercuts. There are a bunch of the usual spots round town, and some other barbers and stuff.

If you're a guy, go here for haircuts and ask for Sharma. He's "the man for men's haircuts". Thank me later.

What's going on at the event? I'm curious.
I think it's just a generic meet and greet for IU-affiliated people in the area. I went to a similar event in March and the vast majority of people there were IU alum not related to the law school in any way (though I did meet an awesome group of IU Law students.)

I don't know, but there is a hair cut place in Memorial Union. I don't know if it's any good or not.

Hey, kinda of late in the game (took a long trip this summer) but I'm looking for a place to stay preferably close to the law school since I'm not familiar with the area . Would it be wise to live in on-campus graduate housing apts? If so, where? Off-campus?

I'm pretty sure they don't have on-campus graduate housing (at least not for law students.) You can get a 2-br at Burnham like a block from the law school for $1100/mo. ($550/person.) If you go further out you can find cheaper 1-brs and rooms in houses for less than $500/mo.

I'd suggest at least checking out the places on the FB page for the 2013 group. I think it mainly exists as an advertisement for law students. Most of the places are pretty cheap and close to the school. You may be a little late to the game with it being damn near August in a college town.

Those of you who are summer starters, how are things going? How's Gjerdingen's new curriculum working out?

Summer start- the good: Relatively easy to keep up with all the reading. Seems like a lot of hand holding on the whole "how to do law school" when we started but we have done less of that sort of thing. Awesome to have almost the whole campus to ourselves (sorry if they run out of lockers boys and girls :) ) and as I have nothing to compare it with, the new curriculum seems to be working out. Also, I hear exam soft has spell check. Score!

the bad: exam is right around the corner and my outline is a complete mess. Not sure if its the massive time crunch of getting through so many topics in what seems like a little bit of time but I can't get going on the dang thing, feel like I am screwing up in that department. Also, the fact that it is only one class scares me a little bit because if I wanted to I could spend 12 hours a day on this stuff, just makes the idea of facing 5 subjects a little more scary.

the neutral: everyone in summer start seems pretty motivated. Lot of smart peeps. Not too competitive but definitely notice people glancing at other people out of the corners of their eyes sometimes with that "he's studying again?" look in their eyes. Good times.

I should have done summer start. Sounds pretty cool. How is the teacher? I think us incoming 1Ls get a choice of Torts teachers this fall. What kind of supplements are you finding to be the most helpful?

I don't know if this has been discussed already, but what is the parking situation like at the law school? It looks like you need to get some kind of permit for the lots located across the street from the campus. Are the permits expensive and is parking extremely difficult to get during the year?

No and no. Parking is a little tight on the streets near the law school, but I know plenty of people who never had a permit and only parked on them. At the very least, its nothing compared to many college towns. (Ann Arbor comes to mind).

Gerdy is pretty good. He is very passionate about teaching and wants everyone to have the tools to do well, think that's why he spends a good deal of time on exam taking and argument making. He hasn't cold called at all but like I said, the class is pretty motivated so he has no shortage of volunteers. I heard that he does cold call but I haven't experienced it myself. To be honest, I find taking notes from his lecture a bit daunting. He starts ideas, goes off on like four other ideas, and then comes back to the first idea all of the sudden. Try to get a good set of notes before class from the reading and just add the tidbits or you might end up a little frustrated. My notes from the first week are pretty disjointed.

I am hesitant to recommend a supplemental since I haven't had the exam yet but if I were to wager it would be the exam bank that you get access to. Just keep doing past exams once you have a little doctrine in you. I have an E&E that I like because its a good read but you should really probably key your studying to the syllabus. He mentioned that he really liked Prosser's hornbook if you were to get a supplement, and you can read that in the library, might be better off not buying it.

All and all, I think he's a good teacher but he is the only law prof. I have been exposed to so a little bit of the blind leading the blind there.

This seems like such a long shot, but I'm going to give it a go anyway. Anybody on this forum take Madeira for Torts? If so, care to share your thoughts?

I take it you guys get to pick torts again this year? Im sure there are a few 3L's floating aroudn that may have taken Madeira.

Completely speculative small sample size statement, buttt there are at least 5 of us in Heidt last year that are transferring or gotten into schools to transfer. and I also know that many others did very well grade wise from the class as well. So I would say that He really can help you in not only torts but in other classes, Yeah he works you to death sometimes but it does help a lot.

Hmmm... Madiera didn't teach last year. I'll check with some 3L's this weekend to see if anyone has heard about him.

Oh really? I put Gjerdingen as my first choice just cause he taught the mock class at orientation and seemed like a cool enough guy.

Both Donny G and Heidt are both guys people either love or hate. I think Heidt pushes both love and hate to the farther extremes. I think it depends on what type of teaching style you like, but I would like to think that... lemme see... hmm... I dunno who Mulligan had for torts, but I don't know any other person on here that had Heidt (who wouldn't give a glowing review... bankhead). It's hard to say. I've either heard the worst things about Heidt, or the best. I plan on taking one of his other classes soon though, if that helps. Doesn't he make you write a brief around the busiest part of your entire law school career?

I'm not sure if Brown is even an option this semester, but he was a consistently terribly rated professor. He also had the most frightening link on ATL I have ever seen. My only question is how can you not teach intentional torts? WTF?

FWIW, Gjerdingen was by far my least favorite professor. He was way too interested in lecturing about random "life lessons" and didn't really teach much torts. I learned all I know about Torts from my dear Emanuel and Tortzilla. (Which was completely against his advice, btw, but more effective than anything he did.)

And his exams are ENTIRELY about how fast you type. He's even said his exams were like "pin ball machines" where in your just knowledge dumped and racked up point. I don't think typing fast is what should define a lawyer.

It was also annoying how he had a tendency to hone on the cute girls in group discussions while ignoring the guys and showing up at Bluebird at 1:45 AM. I could go on for eons, but I know do know a few people that really liked him. He's one of the more polarizing figures in the law school. You're right, Heidt is one of them. So is Stake.

On the other hand, there's a few universally appreciated profs, like the Williamses and Henderson. Pretty much all are at least respected.

Perhaps he has changed. I didn't write a whole lot, and I did really well. I know people who managed a few thousand more words and did not manage as well. I thought he managed teaching fairly well, but I'm not a huge in class learner.

I did grab a supplement just for a little clarification, but I barely relied on it. I think he was one of few professors where the readings will actually apply to the final.

I never noticed him favoring the cuter girls and ignoring guys. Nor have I heard bout any late bluebird arrivals. I have noticed he is polarizing, but it doesn't seem too far to the extremes. People either hate his tangents or like how he keeps things interesting.

Love the Williams.

Didn't Henderson do Legal Professions? Because I think he did that in Spring 09, and from a number of colorful adjectives, respected was not one of them I heard. I may be mixing up my professors though.

My understanding of the parking situation is that none of the IU garages or lots near the Law School are available to law students. The law students that park in IU lots, park up near Memorial Stadium, and take a shuttle bus down, which imho is pretty ridiculous. Part of what is attractive about IU is the small collegetown aspect of it. I wouldn't have considered living far away from campus and driving to the Stadium, then taking a bus. That's why I choose to live close to the Law School. I want to be able to just walk there.
