Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
sbrown is clearly wrong. Cornell's awesomeness is too surpassingly great to be measured on any mere numerical scale.

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
well, if you shell out a few bucks ($80 each way? someone quote a price here), you can take the campus-to-campus bus which is apparently a sweet ride to Manhattan... Or you can take greyhound for a bunch less... Also, we have an email listserv which often has requests/ offers for carpool opportunities to various destinations for weekends and breaks... I would assume most of these people are getting where they need to go somehow...
As for having a car, tons of people here don't... I do, but I have had to take the bus a couple times this week, and it's been fine (and I live about as far from the school as I think anyone ever has)... closer to downtown/ school area, there are tons of local routes it seems... Also, some people here live in apartment complexes which provide their own shuttles for residents... no one here ever complains about the commute except for the walks up the hill...

The weekend price is 72 round-trip on the Shortline Bus, which is run by CoachUSA. Dunno about during the week though.presh wrote:New question, kind of random.
How easy/difficult is it to visit people in NYC while at Ithaca. I've spent time in NYC and have a lot of friends there, but I've never been upstate.
Is it expensive? How close is public transit to the school? (I don't want to have a car unless I absolutely must).

the campus-to-campus bus (no stops along the way, larger cushier seats, wireless internet) is $150 roundtrip.

How is the cost of living? What are you paying a month for rent? Do gas and groceries seem reasonably priced compared to where you are originally from? Thanks!

I went to Cornell undergrad & my bf is a townie from there-- you need a fishing license to fish--once you have that, you can fish anywhere (it's really popular in Ithaca because of all the lakes!!). Police do crack down on you & write overpriced tix if you don't have a license.

The Shortline bus is waaaay more from Ithaca to NYC nowadays. It costs almost $100 RT with a student ID & if you buy your tix at the Ithaca bus terminal, they are always trying to rip the Cornell students off!! Cornell's website has a student ride board section, so you'll probably get a ride with someone during Fall Break/Thanksgiving/& such!!

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
Cost of living is reasonable. Rent is similar to what I paid in Houston, but the places are not as nice. Everything here is older and most of the places I lived in, in Houston were pretty new. I actually bought the condo I am living in, so I;ll have to let someone else answer specifics.fightin illini 25 wrote:How is the cost of living? What are you paying a month for rent? Food and gas here is more than in Houston, but TX has a really low cost of living in general. I think Ithaca is slightly overpriced for the surrounding area, but that is because it is a collegetown.

Lame app question-
For "Why Cornell" did you just use the space provided on the app or did you attach a longer addendum?
Thanks!

I just used the space provided. I think either way would probably be fine though.

Re: Cornell 1L taking questions
I know people who were admitted by doing both. I actually used an attachment because Cornell was one of my top choices for pretty specific reasons that I had wanted to elaborate on. I'd think if you really have good reasons and could actually use more space than what's provided, just have an addendum attached. If not, then just use the space provided. It's not necessary to go beyond the space they give you, but if you can (and want to), that'd be fine.bilbobaggins wrote:Lame app question-

If I go to Cornell, will I get to meet the lady who answers the phones at the admissions office?
I think I'm in love with her.

I don't know if that's going to be offered next year, though.

No, but I hear it has an incomparable setting. I really do need to relax and unwind, and keep meaning to find the time to swing away.Darth Topher wrote:Darth Topher wrote:Have any of you played a round of golf at the Cornell course?

I have not played it but it looks awesome. Darth, when my father in law comes to visit I'll have him give me a detailed account of how it is just for you. Hope you dont mind waiting 6 months though...woeisme wrote:No, but I hear it has an incomparable setting.
