Big screens, nice battery life, etc. are all viable considerations, but ultimately your laptop is a vehicle for taking exams, and an absolutely crucial exam-taking skill is fast and efficient typing. Try out different models in the store see what you're comfortable. The mac laptops have fantastic keyboards in general, but if you don't to spend a fortune on a laptop, you'll have to play around with the pc-laptop keyboards to get a feel for what you like. My $400 Asus had a fantastic keyboard, and I really think that was all I needed from a computer in the law school setting.

lol i did not know people brought in external keyboards...my god. talk about having a target on your back. I think if i find someone doing that in my classes, I'll bring my mechanical keyboard (blue switches clickety clackety) and sit next to them and type furiously with my 100 plus wpm or switch it up from slow to fast lol.

They're pretty similar in terms of dimensions. The main difference is that if you're looking at both machines from the side, the T440s is a rectangle (same height at back and front), while the X1 tapers (back is same height as T440s, front is thinner).

Yeah the T440s is similar, I was actually pleasantly surprised because I did not see it in person before buying. It's actually pretty sleek and compact. It does not have the tapered design though like the X1, so it is a little thicker, and heavier as you mentioned.

But it's like 0.8 inches thick and 3.5 lbs (w/out touch screen, 4lbs or so with) which I think is a great size.

Where have you seen the x1?! I've been looking for them everywhere!

Yeah the x1 is just a little more ultabooky slimmer and a better screen, but I think a wee bit overpriced but then again you're getting thinkpad quality in a super slim design. And yeah microsoft store is the og to place right now! But I'm just saying you can get the s7 for 850-900 right now and it's build quality is supposed to be pretty damn good overall, it's just so much cheaper than the x1 and it's not like the rigors of law school demand the sturdiest design possible.

I agree ... X1 is probably not worth the price premium. It's just the only Thinkpad I've recently seen in person and I just wanted to use it as a point of reference to get an idea of the sizing of the T440S.

The Aspire is the clear bang-for-buck winner. I hate the white, but otherwise it's pretty appealing. I'm just a little put off by reviews online about lemon machines.

Haha I was trying to find the Aspire too. Was interested in the x1 since it has a 14in screen but was still under 3lbs. Went to a local Microsoft store and they only had the Lenovo Yoga... Is that where you or mt2165 saw the aspire? Best Buy also didn't have either the x1 or the aspire.
Yeah Microsoft store has the aspire s7 and the x1

Lenovo just canceled my order (after they kept pushing the shipping date back for the past two weeks) so it looks like I'm in the market for a new laptop yet again.

If you can handle the bulk, this laptop is really the one of the best deals you can get spec-wise. If you don't plan on gaming/doing heavy multimedia editing, the discrete graphics chip will not really be useful. You pay the penalty in portability (5.5lbs, 0.59-1.29" thick).

I definitely considered it (thanks, DF)! But I did want something a bit more portable so I went with a Lenovo ideapad.

It honestly depends on what's important to you. Size, looks, screen, durability, storage capacity, battery life etc. most people will say you can't go wrong w a MacBook Air in that range I just find them boring and have a few big caveats.

FWIW, I got a macbook pro in UG, and I think it's superior to a Microsoft laptop (especially the newer ones) in every possible way.

I've used PCs all my life and don't wanna change right before LS (obvious reasons)

I'm reading up on differences between a laptop and chromebooks and notebooks and ultrabooks and facebooks and I just want to go back to the good old days of library books
Lol makes sense well I'll say you don't/can't do chromebooks because of the limitations of the operating system and the testing software schools use. You can find some budget ultrabooks which should work in the price range
