Yes, Ken is a real person, though he is reaching near-mythical status on TLS.

(It says on the article "Foreword by Ken DeLeon, creator of Top-law-schools.com," so that is what I am going by.)

Apologies in advance if this has already been discussed, but what's the consensus on Macs vs. PCs for laptops? I've been a Mac person for years now and am looking to purchase a new laptop but am worried that I will face more compatability issues when exam time comes with a Mac. Any thoughts? Many thanks.

Career services is great. I've never had trouble getting an appointment when I wanted one, or answers to questions through email.

Probably at least half the class has Macs, myself included. There is an exam program specifically for Macs, which they say is in the testing phase (this is the second year) but I don't know anyone that has had problems with it. The only difference is that you have to sign up for the Mac program and run a test thing before a certain date. It's really not a hassle at all.

and, do they really care if you remove any of the furniture? I don't know if it's actually even possible but in my UG dorms the unofficial policy was that you could take something out as long as you brought it back by the time you moved out

Seems like many people try to find others in the same building to take furniture for the year. Probably would be difficult to remove from the building though, since there's a doorman 24/7 and the regular door isn't big enough for bigger furniture.

I've been very happy with the resources provided by NYU. I found it easy to get an appointment and they went through my resume. You get a large binder with lots of information about the job search process, and the office never seemed busy when I visited. (Perhaps it gets busier in the summer or when more 2Ls want advice).

Re:Macs

I was surprised at the percentage of Mac's in the class. I had no problems with it.

Re:Flag Football

You should probably ask your lawyering TA's about it or others in your class. There was a lot of participation so it shouldn't be hard to find a team.

Re:IP

I probably shouldn't have stated the number of current IP profs since there seems to be more than I thought and I hadn't researched it properly. A better choice would be to look at the number of IP courses.

For next year, there seems to be a good selection of IP and related courses (NYU groups them under "Trade Regulation")

There appear to be about 11 IP-related courses next year, with some other courses related to Anti-Trust and the Internet.

Or even a detailed description of the included furniture would be very helpful!

Room Furnishings and Supplies
Please be prepared to bring a desk lamp (it is recommended that Mercer residents also bring a floor lamp as there is no overhead lighting), linens, pillows, blankets, kitchen utensils, garbage can, etc.

Halogen lamps are prohibited in NYU School of Law housing.

Bed sizes for linens are as follows: D'Agostino Hall type L1 apartments (full); 130 MacDougal Street (full); L2 apartments utilized for family housing (full); 240 Mercer Street type A, D, and E apartments (queen); all other locations have extra long 80" x 36" mattresses. Rooms are furnished with a bed, dresser built-in drawers in D'Agostino Hall), desk, chair, and bookcase. This furniture is not removable due to storage limitations.

Shower curtains and window blinds are provided for each apartment.

My G type has a bed, desk, dresser, bookcase, and two chairs. The E should have a queen size bed. Presumably the living area should have a table and some chairs as well.

No microwave.

i have an F, it came with a table for the kitchen + 1 chair there, a regular chair and a more loungey chair in each BR, big ass desk and bookshelf (one that is on top of the desk and one stand-alone) in each room, a twin size bed , a dresser. NO microwave in mine though someone else says they had one in their apt when he moved in.

if i ever clean my room i'd take a pic but....

the 11 waverly place building with many studios in the $1500-$1700 range is like two blocks from mercer and almost the same price. no idea how legit it is, but I would imagine you wouldnt have trouble getting a studio for a comparable price within walking distance of the law school.

The offer seems like it is only directed to existing students staying an extra year. Presumably the student housing market is soft so a 11% discount is how they're trying to keep people here.

I have a question about registering for classes. The bidding system NYU uses seems a little confusing - but how hard is it to get classes with the more well known professors?

I imagine lots of people want to get into courses taught by Epstein, Dworkin, etc. but how likely is that (i.e. how much should someone deciding to attend NYU factor those professors into their decision making)?

As far as I know this summer will be the first time the bidding system is used, so I'm not sure anyone knows how hard it will be to get the classes you want. Some of the well known professors teach 1L classes (Epstein, Miller, Posner) so there's always the chance you'll have them then.

Any current students: often do you study in your room vs. the library or somewhere else?

Mostly the reason is, I'm considering getting a big monitor for my laptop, and I really like those new Mac 24" LCD's but they're like $900 and I don't want to spend all that on a monitor if I'm never even going to be studying at home.

I know the answer to this probably just depends on personal preference, but do yall generally think it would be useful, or stupid to invest in a monitor for home?

I haven't had much experience with Macs, but I doubt that they need to use Apple monitors. You can probably get a good monitor for far less if you can bear to let go of the Apple logo. Try looking around on tigerdirect.com or newegg.com. They usually have good deals.
