Yeah. I don't see a huge drop. US News realizes they'd look bad if they dropped IU right after raising them so quickly.

Re: Indiana University - Bloomington 1L's taking questions
They would drop because other schools reemphasized their own US NEWS gaming, and those other schools have inherent advantages over IU. Think Fordham & GW - they have pretty well entrenched advantages in reputation and employment stats, so they don't need to make up as much of a difference - particularly since that because the rankings are so tight in this range, the difference only amounts to a couple of points.Vincent Vega wrote:People keep saying Indiana is going to have a huge drop this year, but no one will give a good reason why. Just because they're "over-ranked" this year doesn't mean they're going to fall, as long as the criteria that gave them the boost stays the same relative to peer schools.Spoonmanners wrote:Oh no, I agree. I was trying to find some justification for dropping. My understanding is the donation is a trust and scholarships use the interest. If all of our respective numbers from the prior year remain the same or improve, it's hard to imagine us dropping in the rankings.superflush wrote:Probably not, and here's why. That money is put into the endowment and obviously it is not all spent at once. I'm pretty sure the recognition comes from actually spending money: giving out scholarships, endowed professorships, new buildings/additions.Spoonmanners wrote: I would think the people at USNews who run the numbers would temper jumps in rankings to give the list some stability. If I donated $50 million to Notre Dame, does that mean they get one big bump, then fall back? I would think they would pace out a jump like that, or else every year small differences in numbers would move a large amount of schools up or down.
I am also checking TLS more often after the rankings leaked last year. Someone found a copy of the report a few days early. I think I followed it online until 2 or 3 in the morning and all the schools were in.
There are also a few things about IU's numbers for that particular year that were a little flukey, for example both the yield and acceptance rate improved dramatically. I remember talking to a professor who focuses on studying the rankings, and he explicitly said this was a fluke. Now while we might be able to strengthen those numbers with the money we've received, we won't likely see the effects until the next incoming class.

I could see Fordham and GW gaining, and possible one or two more, but having IU fall back out of the top-20 is not realistic this year, though, I don't think.danquayle wrote:They would drop because other schools reemphasized their own US NEWS gaming, and those other schools have inherent advantages over IU. Enjoyed my visit today. The con law class was interesting, and all the administrators put me at ease about the school.

Re: Indiana University - Bloomington 1L's taking questions
Thanks everyone for the feedback I greatly appreciate it. I'm going to think about it some more over the weekend.agentcom wrote:I, too, had a school ranked similarly to W&M in my top 4. I had a similar cost comparison, too. The other school offered me some scholarship, but it was an expensive place to live. I also knew a prof. there who would give me a research assistantship. Finally, the other school is in a phenomenal location (that last one might give it away).Unjust Enrichment wrote:I was in the same position as you last year, where I had IU and a similarly ranked school as my top choices. The IU price tag was the smaller of the two, but not by as much as your discrepancy is. I visited IU, loved it, and promptly canceled my next visit...the admissions office of the other school was unimpressive and uncommunicative, while IU showed me they wanted me and put in good effort to recruit me. I couldn't see the other school winning me over at that point, so I just wasn't going to waste the money on travel expenses.SportsFanatic wrote:Hi everyone. I don't post here much, but was looking for some insight. I think I have a failry easy decision to make, but would like to hear some other advice and maybe reassurance (part of me likes the suspense of deciding where to attend and don't want it to be over). I have a very generous scholly from IU (75%) and a very meager scholly from W&M (<25%). IU seems like the obvious choice to me, I loved my visit and had a blast. I'm scheduled to visit W&M next week, however, I'm thinking it's not even worth it at this point. But another part of me is saying you never know until you visit. What do you guys think?
By the way I don't have a preference of where I work after school and I'm interested in Corp law (big firm).
I don't regret never bothering with another visit, but obviously if there's something about W&M that makes you think they might win you over, then by all means be sure. This is a life-determining decision, so if you're not totally sure then what's a few hundred bucks more in solidifying your decision?
Anyway, I visited them both and just couldn't pass up on IU's offer. I strongly suggest that you visit all the schools that you're thinking about. Go to W&M and see what they have to offer. Visiting all the law schools that I was considering was one of the best things that I've ever done. Otherwise you're only interaction with the school is via the admissions department and their pamphlets--hardly the most trustworthy of sources as their job is to make the school look the absolute best it can.
IU's a school that I was lukewarm on going into the admissions process and completely won me over. So it does happen.

I finally saw the Giants hat today too!
I've definitely never seen you before, or your face wasn't even remotely familiar at least. And now I think I've forgotten what you look like again. But I can confirm that you're not just a mythical creature.

We had a visitor in Baude's class today too. I'm kind of excited about all the new 1L's coming in this fall.

And yet you skipped property? I'm trying to figure out if I have ever talked to you... I really think I put on a mental block on people who wear hats because I didn't see it.kings84_wr wrote:I keep a pretty low profile, so Im not surprised. So is it IU and UIUC? How'd we do? I know Williams doesn't disappoint in class, he's the friggin man.MBZags wrote:Enjoyed my visit today. The con law class was interesting, and all the administrators put me at ease about the school.

It's bizarre, I understand the part that he's obviously really quiet in class, but it seems like I would at least recognize any number of faces and think, "Oh yeah, I've seen them around." This guy is out of an HG Wells novel.Spoonmanners wrote:And yet you skipped property? I'm trying to figure out if I have ever talked to you... To be fair, most were accidental. Or really obvious. If kings didn't tell me when his go was in property, I would have no fucking idea who kings was.Bankhead wrote:You guys are too funny.

Check out the art museum in Bloomington. It's actually rather amazing from what I hear. Other than that, there's always downtown Indy. Only an hour and a twenty minutes away. An hour if you drive like me.drwjr21 wrote:I am visiting the law school next week and was wondering if there was anything I must do or see in the Bloomigton/Indianopolis area, i've never been there before. I wear non-baseball hats a lot for what it's worth. It's pretty easy to spot me. I actually had a rather long discussion with Professor Gjerdingen before class about hats once.kings84_wr wrote:

Go to the Irish Lion and that brewery that makes that pale ale. I think it's around... 7th-ish street. And I can't think of the name of the beer. Past that, I haven't done much of shit in the entire Midwest. I would assume there is cool stuff.drwjr21 wrote:I am visiting the law school next week and was wondering if there was anything I must do or see in the Bloomigton/Indianopolis area, i've never been there before. If you come through south Illinois, snap a picture at Metropolis, Illinois of their giant Superman statute. It's about 10 minutes off the highway.

Seriously? What are you waiting for?
