A few profs claim to give extra bonus points to people who are especially good, but to be honest I know at least one of my profs last semester turned in our grades without even looking at any names. So in general, Ive found that class participation does not hurt, as long as you are there and give some response when called on.

You definitely have professors that will bump you for participation. Its more pronounced in the smaller discussion type classes you get after 1L though. For example, I had one class where my actual letter grade was just a B/B-, but the prof bumped it all the way to a straight A because I dominated class discussions.

Have you ever heard of anyone being marked down though? outside of the obvious never coming to class or other actions? And even then ive had several friends miss a lot of class and still do well.

Only if its egregious like you'd suggested. Heck, one of my best buddies skipped all but probably 3 classes of Secured and walked away with the A*.


Edit: In some classes there are participation evaluations, however, wherein part of your grade is participation. (Evidence)

I'd be kinda pissed if some of these classes bump up people. For instance, in Williams, there are 100 students, and he calls on people. The people asking the questions are doing nothing but wasting time, considering 85% of the questions have no point/relevance. There's not too much opportunity to volunteer with something worth saying. I guess I could just gun all day and hope for the bump?

Guys, please don't rip me if this has already been covered, but how do they reconcile class rank for those summer starters? Dani W. responded to my question with "They are graded the same and factored into your GPA the same" but I don't see how a 1L with one more class than another 1L can be the same unless a summer starter can take one less course than the other normal starters. I know there was some talk about the summer starts on one of these pages but clicking through the entire thread...yeah I'm lazy. Sorry.

There are a surprising number of gunners in conlaw. I got through first semester without any gunners, and the school had to make up for it with conlaw.

It's a long thread. Class rank is based on GPA. So it's not number of classes or anything. I think that's your question. It still averages out all the same.

I heard that 1L's were secretly graded on their own curve anyway. Not sure if this is true or not.

I really doubt you get a bump unless you contribute substance to the class. Usually professors will only do it if they think your exam grade is incongruent with the understanding you displayed in class. Straight gunnin' won't cut the mustard.

and you're right --> its hard to contribute too much in classes those size. Thats why it usually happens in smaller 2L and 3L classes.

You could always get together with the rest of the summer starters and ask for a separate curve retroactively.

I will say today its 80 degrees in Bloomington and in the 50's in Orange county. the one day of the year the weather is better here probably.

Congratulations, Veritas. I think, given your circumstances, you made the correct decision.

Re: class participation -- I think there is a big difference between "gunning" and regular class participation. Whether or not I personally choose to engage in participation regularly, I definitely enjoy the back and forth compared to straight lecture. Especially in a class that isn't Socratic at all. Hoff's classes are a good example. This is of course subject to reasonable class participation. For example asking questions completely off topic is terrible. Also, asking a question with 5 minute remaining on a Friday when you know clear well that the prof. would otherwise dismiss class early barring any questions is miserable form.
