Re: Workout clothes for class
Some people just cannot get comfortable in non-gym and high-school-ish clothes. I'm one of them.RancidSumo wrote:I'm not sure where you buy your clothes but if everything you own except gym clothes is uncomfortable, consider changing stores/sizes. My dress clothes are no less comfortable than my sweatpants and t-shirts. Jeans and a polo or button down is the same story. Perfectly comfortable and doesn't make me look like I'm in need of a shower. I'm not saying wear a suit every day but going at least a step or two above workout attire is necessary in my book.rinkrat19 wrote:Dressing in unnecessarily uncomfortable clothing makes you look uptight.RancidSumo wrote:This thread is weird. Sure, you are technically allowed to wear whatever you want. That said, wearing gym clothes in public makes you look like a slob, whether it is to class, the mall, a restaurant, or anywhere else.
I simply feel most comfortable in sweats/gym shorts and a t-shirt/tank top/hoodie/sweatshirt, while anything else rubs up against my skin and lays over me uncomfortably.
Doesn't mean I wouldn't do what is considered most appropriate to foster the right image - even if it meant "dressing up" (in my case, literally wearing anything other than gym clothes) - but just that I would be uncomfortable.

Dude, you are going to have to get over that discomfort, fast. Grownups don't get to wear gym clothes everywhere.

Re: Workout clothes for class
as an incoming 1L i had never thought about what to wear to class until i saw this. i dont really wear tshirts and shorts that you would work out in, but ill wear normal every day shirts and shorts, and long sleeve/pants including jeans when it gets cooler but probably no pajamas or sweats... nothing fancy. i dont own too much business attire even though i was working for the past year (company attire was "business casual" and i wore the same thing many times, after washing it of course) so ill usually save those for more formal occasions than just going to class

This is accurate. Because formal events happen much more often. I'll still cherish my 4 years of regular gym clothes though.A. Nony Mouse wrote:Dude, you are going to have to get over that discomfort, fast. Grownups don't get to wear gym clothes everywhere.

I think we can all suck it up when we're getting paid...or there's a prospect of being paid (interviews, networking events, etc.).A. Nony Mouse wrote:Dude, you are going to have to get over that discomfort, fast. Grownups don't get to wear gym clothes everywhere.

Lol. I was implying that and explaining why even after work adults don't just revert back to gym clothes, which is literally what I do after having to wear formal clothes.A. I'm more thinking about carlsenetc who I was first responding to.
But also, the spectrum isn't gym clothes <--> formal clothes. There's this whole category of normal clothes in-between. Jeans/polo or khakis/button down aren't formal clothes.

I'm not a normal person. Those things are within my spectrum of "formal clothes". as in, I'll wear them but only on behalf of other people.A. Nony Mouse wrote:I'm more thinking about carlsenetc who I was first responding to.

Yeah, you're going to need to get over that or you're going to be fairly miserable.

I mean the bottom line is, most people should be getting exactly nothing out of this thread. Theoretically, we're talking about grad-level professional school here.
As Cookie Monster says nowadays: "cookies are a sometimes food."
Wear your gym clothes to class. Wear your PJs to your professors' office hours. Tell the world that for you, clean underwear is just too formal. Then, prepare thyself for the righteous judgement of errybody.

Trust me, I know. And for the record I do dress up well every time that it is obvious I should. I'm talking more about going to the grocery store, sitting in class, or walking around campus in gym clothes. I accept people's valid reasons for judging me.A. I don't think gym clothes and PJs are in the same category...zhenders wrote:I mean the bottom line is, most people should be getting exactly nothing out of this thread. Theoretically, we're talking about grad-level professional school here.

Pretty sure the implication was that most people will assume someone dressing like that is failing at other aspects of personal hygiene and grooming. The Mixed Tape wrote:p sure no one is saying dirty gym clothes are OK...zhenders wrote:

There's a pretty great world out there beyond jeans/polo and khakis/buttondowns. Linen/cotton blend pants are awesome. Hell, linen pants are amazing, just get them in a dark color so the wrinkling isn't as apparent. (Just a pair of thoughts in terms of light, non-restrictive items.) Pique fabric polos are awful -- but I'm sitting here wearing a "dry-comfort" polo that's got stretch, softness, and a moisture-wicking that leaves me looking and feeling dry and cool.
Style is highly personal, but I'd recommend taking the opportunities now to develop a casual/business-casual "uniform" that works for you.

Depending on the school people will likely "judge" you whether that is subconscious or not because gym clothes are definitely not a typical part of a law student's wardrobe at certain schools. With that said, if people cannot get over that initial perception then they probably aren't worth talking to.

I'm in leggings and a t-shirt right now myself. Unfortunately I can't wear those to work.El Pollito wrote:on the weekend we doA. Nony Mouse wrote:Dude, you are going to have to get over that discomfort, fast. Grownups don't get to wear gym clothes everywhere.

Re: Workout clothes for class
So I guess wearing an NBA jersey and basketball shorts is too informal eh?
j/k I would never do that. I was merely remarking on how I am most comfortable in such loose fitting clothes. I am relaxed and find myself even thinking better (possibly just a subjective thing or some other thing going on there) - I think - when dressed comfortably. I dislike the "feeling" of formal wear, but would do it without question to fit in and put others at ease, etc.
Too bad I'm not going for a Ph.D. in physics. Have you seen the hair of some of the physics professors out there? Math and chemistry profs. can have some stereotypically "crazy" hair too.

This thread demonstrates what is wrong with the legal profession. If you give a shit what others are wearing to school, you are almost certainly an intolerable person.
Seriously? What are you waiting for?
