Another serious question:
What are some of the study habits of NYU students? Do most people attend class during the day and spend the whole evening reading? I know that there can be a variety of ways to prepare in law school and that different points of the semester require more work than others. I want to get a gauge for what an average student faces and how s/he deals with the workload.

Second, during those first two semesters, are we only being assessed on finals?

1) I'm almost certainly in the bottom quartile in terms of time spent studying and by no means illustrative, but until the month before finals, I'd probably spend about 2, maybe 3 hours a day max (unless I was on call, thankfully I only had one teacher all of 1L year coldcall)--between classes, or, if I was done early, after class--doing the readings and jotting down basic notes instead of briefing every case. I either went out or relaxed almost every night. Plenty of times, I skipped the reading and just checked casebriefs.com before class so I wouldn't be completely lost. Granted, I'm exceptionally lazy, and this doesn't work for everyone, but I managed pretty solid grades--the teachers are pretty good with holding review sessions and releasing practice exams that give plenty of guidance in the last month or two of the semester. Honestly, within my group of friends--all of whom, I should note, got either biglaw jobs or good PI positions during 2L OCI--nobody was killing themselves during the regular season. Some people took better reading notes, and spent more time studying, but any given night, if there was something going on, they'd be able to hang out. Now, for a solid three weeks before finals, we were literally up every night until midnight or 1 AM in study rooms or our dorms cramming, but until then, it's not that bad, really.

Now, everybody I know who's on Law Review and destined for legal greatness worked a lot harder than I, or most of my friends, did. But if you're content kind of floating on through and getting a solid biglaw job, you really don't have to kill yourself.

2) Yep. Lawyering will have assignments due throughout the semester--letting up as finals draw near--but that's ungraded and nobody takes it all that seriously.

Does anyone know much about couples housing options through NYU? What is the typical cost and availability of 1br apartments?

And I'm still trying to figure out if they make you move out during the summer. My wife and I have been debating this option for a few months now.

I don't know about 1BR availability in general, but you can definitely stay in NYU housing over the summers.

For someone who has never lived in the Big Apple (and wants to), how important do you think it is to live in Manhattan during the first year at NYU (as opposed to the second or third year)?

Would the 1L workload make it more worthwhile/feasible to embrace the city living experience during 2L/3L? Or, conversely, do the demands of 1L make close proximity to campus all the more valuable? Or, converse to the converse, do the draws of NYC manifest as temptations that undo one's former productivity?

Also, can one get the NYC experience from Brooklyn?

We have our own kitchen, but there aren't any kitchens in Mercer that come with a dishwasher. I don't usually have a ton of dishes, though, so I've never minded the dishwasher thing.

0L here, NYU admit. I can only speak to your last question, but I have lived in Brooklyn for several years and have never felt shut out of the NYC experience. There are a few drawbacks (late nights waiting for the subway the most prominent) but I have loved it here.

I would also be interested in current students' answers to your earlier questions.

Dag is cheaper and closer to school (literally across the street), but the apartments in Mercer are larger and much nicer/newer than Dag. I'd say it's probably 50-50 in terms of which building 1Ls live in.

I tried to research this on the university webpage and am fairly confident that the answer is yes, but I wanted to make sure.

Yeah, you have full access to the two gym facilities. As for intramurals, I'm not sure

How much of an undergraduate-dorm-feel does D'Agostino have going on? For someone who has been out of the college setting for a few years, would living in D'Ag for 1L be a major step back (mainly in terms of keeping mellow hours and not living like a total slob)?
