Re: Columbia 1L Taking Qs
I'm going to take you up on your offer, Lem--thank you!
I can't seem to find an online schedule of classes anywhere. What does a typical day look like for a Columbia 1L? Do you usually have classes on Fridays? How early/late do classes run?
I'm especially concerned about this as I'll be commuting from far away (~1h20 door to door!). The ideal situation for me would be to have my classes grouped together, so I could leave campus once they're done. I know we don't have any control over our schedules, but I'd just like to know what to expect. Thanks again!

For the most part, students have classes from roughly 10 til 4. The traditional "blocks" are 9:30-10:30, 10:40-12:00, 1:30-2:30, and 2:50-4:10. This isn't to say that you'll have all of those blocks filled. Typically, you'll only have (at most) 3 classes per day. Some days, you'll only have one class. And very few people have Friday classes.
Sadly, I'm the exception that proves the rule this semester. My CrimLaw professor is is a judge in the 2nd Circuit, and we have 8 AM class on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday morning. This is highly unusual, and honestly, the chance to study under Judge Lynch is worth it. But again - highly unlikely.

^ Thank you! I noticed those 8am classes on the class visitation schedule. Eventually, I'll be taking Debra Livingston's Criminal Investigations class, which also meets early (which means I will have to LEAVE my home in Brooklyn by 6:30). But hopefully the schedule gods will spare me during my 1L year.

why is the library so ugly?
Ok, now in all seriousness... how approachable do you think the faculty is? People at NYU keep saying that CLS professors are distant and unapproachable

1. I am also baffled as to the aesthetics of our libraryKG_CalGuy wrote:why is the library so ugly?

2. I have found my professors to be extremely approachable and very friendly. Almost all the professors I've had were very open to you just walking into office hours and chatting about the material, your career plans, etc. If anything, I've run into more professors that are very happy to invite you to come to office hours for unsolicited advice than professors who don't want to make time. In my three years here, I've been really impressed with the access I've had to even "hotshot" professors. I have heard of one or two exceptions, but you hear about that because they are in fact rare exceptions.
Perhaps NYU students find CLS professors distant and unapproachable because the professors are on the other side of town and the NYU students find it difficult to approach professors at another school??? I don't know why they'd say that about CLS though.

P.S. Also, just FYI if anyone's interested, I can be particularly useful for any public interest questions or questions a 3L might be more likely to know. Feel free to post them here or PM me.

The library was especially designed to be ugly and inhospitable in an effort to force CLS students to take advantage of the 8 other fabulous libraries on campus (Butler, Teacher's College, and East Asian are popular choices).KG_CalGuy wrote:why is the library so ugly?

In all seriousness, please don't use it too often. I tend not to trust the general judgement of CLS library users.
NYU says CLS profs are distant? Not true. Insert one of several annecdotes about grabbing drinks, lunches, coffee, office hours, house parties, yankee's games, concerts, research projects, etc w/ CLS profs. Going to Ginsburg's place this weekend for an end of the semester party, heard last semester Wu and Hemphill showed up too and at least one of them overimbibed.
On the other hand, CLS has nothing to say about NYU profs because we don't know who they are, and like the mature adults we are, don't talk crap about things we don't know.

Whichever library had the columns and steps and statue in front is the one I'm going to be studying at -- it was gorgeous.

Is there bar review tomorrow night? If so, what bar and what time? I am visiting tomorrow and was thinking that would be a good way to talk to current students/observe people in their natural habitat (as opposed to ASW, which is designed to sell the school). If anyone is going and is willing to meet me so I don't feel totally awkward going by myself, that would be awesome.
Also, I asked this last week, but if anyone here lives in UAH housing and is willing to show their apartment tomorrow afternoon/evening or Friday morning, that would be really helpful.

That is Low Library, which confusingly enough is no longer a library. It's an event space and also has offices for the president, dean, etc.blue5385 wrote:Whichever library had the columns and steps and statue in front is the one I'm going to be studying at -- it was gorgeous.

Also, I like to study on the absolutely gorgeous Columbia campus. The first day it was 60 degrees out, hundreds of people just lying out on the green.

TBH, having participated at many of the NYU ASW events I don't know where these stories are coming from. I don't know enough about CLS professors to talk about them, plus everything I've heard from friends at CLS is that the profs are accessible.Lem37 wrote:

Re: Columbia 1L Taking Qs
Nobody openly talked trash about Columbia at the NYU ASW I attended, but there were tons of subtle and not so subtle jabs thrown in there. They did insinuate that 1) the atmosphere at Columbia sucks and you would not enjoy it, 2) that professors were not as accessible as they are at NYU, and 3) that CLS students were not as engaging in comparison to NYU students. They used the term, "that other law school on the upper west side" at least a dozen times that I can remember. It did turn me off quite a bit, but I still loved NYU and their program.badfish wrote:TBH, having participated at many of the NYU ASW events I don't know where these stories are coming from. Do y'all know anyone who has lived in The Arbor? I'll be living with a SO and we both like the idea of having a gym in the building, more space, big kitchen, etc. Plus it's much cheaper than Lenfest or Lionsgate. However the distance is obviously less convenient.
Do any of the CLS students know anything about this new option?

Re: Columbia 1L Taking Qs
I have friends who live there. They say it's every bit as gorgeous as the promotional materials make out; it was designed to lure faculty, and the amenities are fantastic. However, since I never see my friends who live at the Arbor at any after-hours school events, I suspect that the travel inconvenience is also everything it's cracked up to be.viking138 wrote:Do y'all know anyone who has lived in The Arbor? If you're planning to be self-sufficient in your social life, rather than throwing yourself into the law school environment, then the Arbor is a fantastic option. If you want to fully take advantage of everything going on at the law school, it's probably best to get couples housing in Morningside Heights.

Re: Columbia 1L Taking Qs
I don't know how much they charge for parking, but we were told it would be between $1600-1800 for a ~1000 sq ft one bedroom with a large kitchen and living room. That's compared to like a 500 sq ft studio being between 1800-2100 or so at Lenfest I think.Hattori Hanzo wrote:How much cheaper is it? I can't find any rent information.
