Widener Class of 2017

Post by aceholmes » Wed Dec 25, 2013 4:45 pm

Saw a post wasn't created yet. Not sure if I plan to attend next year, but thought I would make a thread!

Honestly, as a local resident I'd urge anyone accepted to Widener to reconsider and look elseware for school or maybe a different path. Widener has the lowest employment school in Pennsylvania (even losing to new-comer Drexel and Ohio Northern, a TTT not even in PA). You're looking at $200k in debt, few job prospects, and strong competition from other local schools (Penn, Temple, PSU, Rutgers, Nova, etc.). Even with a full-scholarship the time spent wouldn't be worth it.

What about the career prospects in Delaware? I understand that there is going to be strong competition regardless, but with a full scholarship it seems tough to turn down.

Not to be rude, but I don't have to justify my decision of going to LS or where to go to LS to anyone but myself and my family. I'm not a wide eye naive 20something who doesn't know what they want to do.

I'm not speaking for no one but myself. I know what atending Widener will cost me, figuratively and literally.

Thanks for your (unneeded) advise though!

Hey, I'm familiar with the Harrisburg area, having lived there for half my life. I can't personally attest to anything regarding Widener Law itself, but make absolutely sure that Harrisburg is where you want to camp for three/four years. The city is like a miniature Detroit, and I don't see it getting any prettier.

The only positive change I see is that the "midtown" area of Harrisburg is starting to pick up. There's an independent theatre and a few hipster coffee shops (I don't mean that as a negative--the coffee is excellent). Otherwise, Harrisburg is just not an exciting place to be.

Widener recently changed their policy regarding scholarship stipulations, its now a "maintain good academic standing" policy. I'm not sure if this is in every case but that is what they emailed me.

The Harrisburg campus isn't in downtown - it's about a 10 minute drive from a capital itself. The area around it is suburban (I should know...I literally live 3 minutes away from the university). I know Widener alums (hbg), one is working for the D.A. and the other is on the Gaming Control Board. *However* I also know an alum that works at one of the downtown bars. It's really important to network here to get your footing, but that safe to say that's the case for every school.

PM me if anyone is interested in knowing more about the area, because like I said, I'm a 3 minute drive away from the campus 8)
