Did anyone get a hand written note from NYU (along with the typical printed out letter about acceptance and what not)? I don't know if this is one of their marketing strategy or actually genuine. Yes, I'm a cynic.

Jealous about how quickly you guys are getting your packages! I'm international, admitted 1/22 and just received my letter yesterday. Still no pizza box!Cocoblues wrote:Dr.Zer0 wrote:Hey coco! I got my letter on Saturday and I'm on the west coast. But still haven't received a package.Cocoblues wrote:I was admitted on 2/11. 8 days later, I still haven't received an official letter/package. IS that normal?
Also, does anyone know the deadline for submitting the NeedAccess info? Getting parental information is turning out to be a real painIt may drag for another week or so.
Thanks Dr. Z. I got the purple envelope this evening. No package.
Does everyone get a pizza box?

I got one too, referring to my work experience. I'd say it's a little of both (in that they are legitimately personalized, to an extent, but ultimately it's a recruitment strat)esther0123 wrote:Did anyone get a hand written note from NYU (along with the typical printed out letter about acceptance and what not)? I got one as well. I'm sure it's partly recruitment. But hey, if the two alternatives are (1) Send personalized note or (2) Don't send personalized note, I'm going to look at the school who chose option 1 more favorably than the school that chose option 2.wealtheow wrote:I got one too, referring to my work experience. Everyone got a note. It's absolutely, positively a recruitment tool. That said, I still feel warm and fuzzy on the inside.lawschool22 wrote:I got one as well. I'm sure it's partly recruitment. The poll above really shows the unrepresentative nature of TLS lol. One in five people so far has a full-ride

So awesome. I'd like to see who of those 7 people are gonna turn it down for HYS.lawschool22 wrote:The poll above really shows the unrepresentative nature of TLS lol. One in five people so far has a full-ride. Wish I was in that group

I probably will. I realize I am in the minority on this but I have the financial support to graduate relatively debt free, and for the kind of career I want after law school, it looks like H will set me up better. Still visiting both before I make a decision though (and waiting on YS)lawschool22 wrote:I hope they have very good reasons for that lolpaglababa wrote:So awesome. Oh for sure, if you can get help from parents or otherwise to graduate H w/ low debt, then it's a no brainer. I'm talking about the people choosing between HLS at sticker and NYU w/ a full ride.residentemma wrote:I probably will. Haha amen. Any of you vandy people who are planning on going to HLS, please reject your offer prior to the deadline. Thank you in advance.Theopliske8711 wrote:Well, I hope they send some of that vandy love back down to me, if there are any rejecting.

I guess TLS consensus is Biglaw -> Full ride t14 hands downTheopliske8711 wrote:Well, I hope they send some of that vandy love back down to me, if there are any rejecting.
Any other ambitions -> HYS
With some slight distinguishing gradients between those.

Yep this is pretty much good advice. Although I would say for certain PI ambitions I would probably take the full ride at NYU. And for clerkships I would probably take a Ruby over HLS at sticker.paglababa wrote:I guess TLS consensus is Biglaw -> Full ride t14 hands downTheopliske8711 wrote:Well, I hope they send some of that vandy love back down to me, if there are any rejecting.

"Fortunately" I won't be making that decision, so if I were to miraculously get H it makes the choice a bit easier lol

I'll split it with him if that's an option lol. Rather take the 1/2 scholly than risk death. If I can add it to my current scholarship I could get close lolresidentemma wrote:I'll put in the "extra comments" section that I want my vandy to go to the victor of a fight to the death between theopliske and ls22lawschool22 wrote:Haha amen. Does this rule only apply to CCN? I feel like it would be harder to pick Cornell full ride over HYS for big law even though Cornell places well in NYC.

Depends where you want to practice. If you were okay w/ NYC (or most other smaller secondary markets that you have ties to) and didn't care about getting into a V5 firm, then Cornell full is probably the correct response. I told someone else recently that you see way more "I regret taking H instead of the T14 full-ride" posts than "I regret taking the full ride over going to H" posts.paglababa wrote:Does this rule only apply to CCN? It just requires being true w/ yourself about your goals and whether you think the school you attend could get you there.

Re: NYU Class of 2017 - New Photos in OP!
I had a young law professor from Ohio State visit my undergrad last fall. He attended SLS, clerked for the supremes, then did some lit work in dc before transitioning into academia. He said T6 > any other T14 at any price. I said, "really? what about full-ride penn or uva?" Reply: "T6. The job placement is just different." Kind of hard for me to believe at the time. Still hard for me to believe.paglababa wrote:Does this rule only apply to CCN? I feel like it would be harder to pick Cornell full ride over HYS for big law even though Cornell places well in NYC.
But is the $ it costs to attend HYS at sticker really that much over a career? At starting 160k, it seems that the debt wouldn't be horrendous to pay back, and you have added job security/opportunities that you wouldn't have at the lower t14.

Re: NYU Class of 2017 - New Photos in OP!
Well if you took it all out in loans you'd probably have about 300k of debt, so I guess if you were doing biglaw and getting 160k and being frugal you could pay it off in 3-5 years... but not everyone makes that right out of school. Also think about opportunity cost... 160k a year with no debt sounds pretty nicecharlie.black wrote:I had a young law professor from Ohio State visit my undergrad last fall. Re: NYU Class of 2017 - New Photos in OP!
Just a heads up - paying off 300k in loans at 6-7 percent interest on a NYC biglaw salary (about 96k a year after taxes and before bonus) in anything close to 3 years is not possible. When you also consider how draining NYC biglaw is, I think that's a pretty unappealing situation.residentemma wrote:Well if you took it all out in loans you'd probably have about 300k of debt, so I guess if you were doing biglaw and getting 160k and being frugal you could pay it off in 3-5 years... but not everyone makes that right out of school. Re: NYU Class of 2017 - New Photos in OP!
The problem is that I don't just take into account how much I will be making, but I have to also assess how long I can honestly expect to survive big law. Ideally, I would like the option to opt out within 2 years after paying off my debt, maybe staying another year or two to save. Many associates don't last that long, so the last thing I need is to have that debt still hanging relatively strong after 3 years.charlie.black wrote:I had a young law professor from Ohio State visit my undergrad last fall.
