Congrats!OliveBC wrote:Sending in my seat deposit shortly! I also negotiated for anyone interested:
3/18 - scholarship decision mailed (didn't get it till a few days later because I was out of town)
4/2 - sent negotiation email with the typical plea (I had 2 higher offers from peer schools)
4/7 - received confirmation they'd gotten my email and that they noted the upcoming NU deadline so they'd get back to me quickly
4/8 - ^they obviously weren't kidding, got my updated offer ($24K increase from initial offer)
Still wasn't a quite match of what the other schools offered but because of my goals and personal reasons I'm willing to pay a bit more for Duke.

sorry to hear thatgta wrote:mydasmarie wrote:I was able to negotiate by emailing the office in a respectful manner and laying out the reasons I had for asking for an increase. I didn't have a peer school offer to negotiate with...what helped is that I was able to convey both through my email (and honestly throughout my application) that Duke was my first choice. I actually got more than what I asked for (makes me wish I asked for more than the 10+increase I originally asked for, but let me not get greedy here!) Hope this helps in some way.![]()
I attempted to negotiate and was denied. I used multiple offers, including two T20 full-rides and a lower T-14 offer at a higher amount, but with a roughly equal COA to Duke.

I think I'm going all-in for Duke. If cost were equal, I prefer it to my other options, and it remains the cheapest of my T14 choices even with Cornell negotiating to a bit above Duke's offer (and Michigan refusing to negotiate).

Glad to hear it. If I (and it seems likely) end up at Duke, you seem like you would be a good addition to the class.Serett wrote:I think I'm going all-in for Duke. Re: Duke Class of 2017
I REALLY want to be in Durham next year. Emailed Dean Hoye on the 8th for a scholarship review request, and he said he'd get back to me. Since then, a CCN has increased their aid offer by 15k. It is still noticeably lower than Duke's original offer, but do you think I should go ahead and let Dean Hoye know today, or wait until he gets back to me? I don't want to tick off Dean Hoye or seem like I'm pestering, but not sure if the 15k increase would influence duke to raise my scholarship amount. Thanks!

And before I had a chance to email Dean Hoye, I got an increase of 9k. What to do, what to do! Would it be in poor form to respond with the increase from Chicago?

I would personally let them know about the increase, this is a lot of money. Just be professional about it.kathj06 wrote:And before I had a chance to email Dean Hoye, I got an increase of 9k. What to do, what to do! Would it be in poor form to respond with the increase from Chicago?

Heard back on my negotiation this week (PM for deets). Slightly underwhelmed, but given my goals, Duke is TCR for sure.
Officially Durham-bound! Feels good to finally have made a decision!

To all my peeps that already sent in their deposit, what carrier did you use? How long did it take from when you sent the deposit off and it arrived at its destination? I'm getting paranoid because I don't think I'll be sending the deposit until Tuesday since I don't want to leave any stone unturned before committing.

UPS Ground, it got there the next morning. I'm in VA, so if you're a couple states away I'd use Next Day Air or Next Day AM to be safe. Just be sure to get tracking and confirmation.retaking23 wrote:To all my peeps that already sent in their deposit, what carrier did you use? Re: Duke Class of 2017
Hey! I am from the northeast and used FedEx two day shipping...it was $8. overnight was like 18$ so I saved 10$ and just did the 2day option. I dropped it off at a FedEx location at 5pm on a Tuesday, it was received in Durham by Thursday morning with a confirmation email from Duke. Mailing it out the 22nd for the 25th as the deadline gives you the same exact timeframe I used (my deadline was the 11th) so I wouldn't be too worried. If your SUPER nervous, just pay the extra 10$ and get it overnighted.retaking23 wrote:To all my peeps that already sent in their deposit, what carrier did you use? BTW-- two of the Duke students I met at ASW commented that they mailed in their deposits late (the day of the deadline) and that they called Dean Hoye frantically about it. Supposedly the admissions office is used to these panic attacks happening the day of deposits and are pretty helpful. The students were obviously admitted. Although I wouldn't recommend you follow their game plan, if by some accident your deposit is late, it shouldn't be "bye bye Duke" for you if you handle it appropriately. I don't know why this answer became such a long response but, yeah haha.

Thank you both for the info! I'm also from Northeast so I'm just gonna drop the extra money to have it sent overnight.mydasmarie wrote: Hey! Negotiated with a significantly larger offer from Cornell and got a 9K bump. Not very significant, but it definitely helps.Jules239 wrote:Anyone else not heard back yet about scholarship negotiation?

Re: Duke Class of 2017
Just deposited!
Planning on retaking in June for possible scholarship bump/reapply next cycle, but would prefer to go this year (also riding out some wait lists). Currently looking to get housing set up. Garret West probably if I jump on it soon enough. I am pretty impressed with some of the opportunities Duke affords--3 people summering at Williams and Connolly is goddam impressive (dream firm). Good luck to everyone and I'll see you in Durham (probably).

Straight from the admitted student website: "In order to enroll in the entering class, a non-refundable enrollment deposit of $500 must be received in the Office of Admissions by the date specified in your correspondence. Include your full name and LSAC account number on the check or money order made payable to Duke Law School. We are unable to accept debit or credit card payments. The non-refundable enrollment deposit will be credited toward your student account once you matriculat. Please note that the submission of your tuition deposit indicates that you intend to enroll at Duke Law School. If you submit your tuition deposit to Duke, you must withdraw from all other law schools to which you have been admitted." (Yes they forgot the e on matriculate)gta wrote:I'm very concerned about this. So you shouldn't have anything to negotiate with once you send in your deposit. Although according the Spivey's blog the consequences of double-depositing aren't quite clear and could work out if you want to risk it? http://spiveyconsulting.com/blog/the-mu ... ot-happen/
You can also ride out waitlists and use any movement off those to negotiate after the deadline.

Duke confirmed receipt of my deposit today, so barring WL shenanigans, that's that.

Hope you pick Duke! Can't beat that COL. As someone who lived in a crap apartment in DC for $1000+ a month, I'm looking forward to having a nice place in Durham for under $800.fkt18 wrote:I'm still choosing between Duke and Georgetown... this is a very difficult decision.
