It is a bit of a flight risk. Why is someone from UT trying to come to MD? It doesn't make much sense to most hiring partners. It can be done, but will prob mean you'll have to be near the top of your class so they feel the risk of taking you is worth it.choward014 wrote:Well, its not that i WANT a job on the east coast, its just that I want it to be an option. Like, Dallas is my first choice, but if I have to move back home to Baltimore how would one go about doing that? UT is better than any school in that area (besides GULC, I guess) so if you went up to a BL firm in the area, wouldn't it be very wise of them to consider that graduate moreso than a MD grad or a UBalt grad?

Okay, that makes sense. I just want to have both options open, and UT is my best shot at that. I feel like I have a much better shot at getting hired in maryland from UT then I do getting hired in Dallas from Maryland... I guess lol

Why is UT your best shot? It isn't much harder, if any more difficult, to get into GULC, NU, Cornell than UT?

stupid question from someone who isnt even applying til december but ive always wondered... so what are the student ticket packages like? Like if you wanted a ticket to every home football/basketball game, is it decent and are the SS seats good?

Check out the UT Sports page for info. And once again, I'd highly recommend not waiting until December.choward014 wrote:stupid question from someone who isnt even applying til december but ive always wondered... so what are the student ticket packages like? I have to wait for the 1st semester's GPAs to come out.... So I really have no other option then to wait until the first week of Dec. But rest assured I'll be applying the first day they're out.Attax wrote:Check out the UT Sports page for info. Re: Texas Class of 2017
Just read on UT's website that they offer a 10,000 dollar stipend to ED applicants... would it be worth applying ED if I got this? In other words, would it increase my chances of getting in? Or would it be better to wait it out til I got the better GPA and then apply, and if I actually got in I probably get a higher than 10,000 scholly. In other words, I know I won't get a scholly (or a big one, anyway) if I go ED. But does it increase the likelihood of acceptation if they KNOW you wanna go there? Or do I have the same shot whether its ED or whether its normal

Also you can get your application in right away and then update them with grades at a later date. That's a better route than delaying the entire application for fall grades. Graduating and working for at least a little while is probably an even better route though.

Re: Texas Class of 2017
I'm taking the September LSAT, but as of now I'm at 168/3.26. I've got very easy classes this first semester and I fully expect to get 5 A's. I'm shooting for a 170 plus LSAT score, but right now I feel like I'm so borderline that its worth waiting til everything is higher.Will_McAvoy wrote:What are your stats?choward014 wrote:Just read on UT's website that they offer a 10,000 dollar stipend to ED applicants... would it be worth applying ED if I got this? So, you're saying I can get my app in, but what if they review my application before my updated grades?
(oh and about putting it off a year, money won't really be an issue if I can manage to get accepted to UT)

Re: Texas Class of 2017
With those stats, I would say ED isn't a bad idea. Your chances of being accepted are very good with that LSAT, but your chances of getting > 10K/Yr scholarship with that GPA aren't fantastic. That's a good price to lock in at for in-state, if you're sure you want to go there. (If you get a significantly better score then don't ED)choward014 wrote:I'm taking the September LSAT, but as of now I'm at 168/3.26. If you ED it's obviously irrelevant, but yes I would say getting your application in during September with a 3.2 is a far better situation than finalizing your application around the holidays with a 3.4. You're going to be below the 25th percentile GPA no matter what, so give yourself a timing boost.
Unless you're some lib arts bro without great job prospects, TCR on TLS is typically that work experience is preferable to KJD (for reasons beyond finance), but being KJD isn't a "problem" by any means.

Re: Texas Class of 2017
So even if I was to raise my score to a 170-173, my prospects of getting more than 10000 arent great? I have decent softs... not great. I also see that UT gives out grants (average of 7500) to in states.
The only two benefits I see of ED at UT are 1) probably a little higher chance of acceptance and 2) 10,000 dollar stipend towards housing.
I figured though that if I got a 170 or higher on the LSAT that my scholly would be higher than the approx 17,500 I'd get from ED. I know it contradicts what I said earlier about money not being an issue...but if its there why not?

Re: Texas Class of 2017
Note that I said I would not ED if you got a score significantly better than 168. That's not because UT is likely to offer you a scholarship > 10K/yr (because that's pretty much their starting point for everyone in that lsat range(whose GPAs aren't very low)), but other schools will offer you big scholarships that will force UT to up their offer.choward014 wrote:So even if I was to raise my score to a 170-173, my prospects of getting more than 10000 arent great? But yes, if you're in-state, the grant needs to be factored into your cost estimates. I believe the starting point is typically 3K per year (not 7500). Some out of state students do not like this.

Re: Texas Class of 2017
On LSN with a 172/3.4 nonURM ED only to Texas you're looking at $50,000 total scholarship.
With 168/3.2 nonURM ED only to Texas you're most likely rejected, but if accepted you'll get $20,000 total which is less than I got non-ED'ing with a lower GPA.
With 168/3.2 applied early you're probably in (LSN says out, but that's based historically and this year's trends changed)
Versus 171/3.4 applied Feb-May you're 50/50.
Apply early, then raise stats, get more money, don't ED.

Okay, so just apply early. So I have a question about that: If I apply early and ask them to defer my decision, what if they've accepted their class? Would they hold a spot for my decision or would they just WL me?
Or are you guys saying to apply early, see what their decision is, and THEN after my grades increase, try to up my scholly money?

Re: Texas Class of 2017
The second. Your stats, according to this year's trend at least, should definitely get you in. Getting in is important, then getting scholly is important. I got in with no scholly and negotiated my way up. If you ask them to defer a decision they probably won't even look at you until later which sucks in a rolling admissions process. They'd prob just WL you or deny you later on in the cycle.choward014 wrote:Okay, so just apply early. Thanks. When I was reclassified from out-of-state to in-state in May, I didn't ask whether I'd qualify for a grant now, since a) I figured the grant money was already gone by then, and b)the tax information I sent FAFSA represents my last full year in the military, so my EFC was $55k.shifty_eyed wrote:YesScottRiqui wrote:Are the grants need-based?cannibal ox wrote:Fixed that for you.Will_McAvoy wrote:But yes, if you're in-state, the grant needs to be factored into your cost estimates. They are? I thought there was the standard 3K in-state grant (unrelated to scholarships)? Or is it need-based insofar as if you make over x amount you don't get the disbursement?shifty_eyed wrote:YesScottRiqui wrote:Are the grants need-based?cannibal ox wrote:Fixed that for you.Will_McAvoy wrote:But yes, if you're in-state, the grant needs to be factored into your cost estimates. Re: Texas Class of 2017
Alright, I get it. Although I feel it is sort of a risk with my GPA, I'll do it. You guys think there is a higher chance of me getting in with an October application (as soon as I get my LSAT score) then there is with upped stats in a late December application. If that's what you guys believe, you probably know more about it then me.
What goes with the application? Just the usual?
If I got in, my summer next year would consist of nothing but booze, so when I visit austin hopefully one of you delightful people can accommodate me!
