Re: Texas Class of 2017
It depends on how much nightlife you're talking about being near. If you're talking about being in the heart of it all, yeah, commuting from downtown might be a hassle (although the 7 and 10 and maybe other buses would work well). But if you just mean a selection of cool neighborhood bars and restaurants, you might want to look on Manor Road just east of the Y with Dean Keeton (which will be walkable, bus-served, and young), Hyde Park (near Duval & 45th) or North Loop (53rd/North Loop).
Whatever you do, don't go south of the river. It's bad enough trying to cross the river when you control your own transportation.
In case you haven't seen the big bus map yet to see what goes past the LS (at Dedman/Dean Keeton): https://www.capmetro.org/uploadedfiles/ ... em_Map.pdf
Zoom in on the UT inset.

Yeah I live in Cherrywood now (the area N of Dean Keaton BVest described) and really like it. Many of us are going to be in N Campus/Hyde Park but this late you'll be hard pressed to find quality places for good prices.

We were disappointed to find no booze at the patio party. It's a good time to meet people and make plans to go drinking after though.Attax wrote:Food, and probably booze.TheWalrus wrote:What all does this party on the patio entail?

You're really gonna try to foot it in Texas without a car?ojala wrote:Hi All! Sorry if the housing conversation has already happened, but I am still looking for a place and need some guidance!
I'm moving to Austin in August. I don't drive (though I'm working on it!) and so for the first year at least I'd like to either be walking distance from UT or somewhere where public transportation is still reasonably accessible. At the same time, I would like to be reasonably close to night life. Do you have any neighborhood recommendations so that I can focus my search a little more? Also, do you think a car would be absolutely necessary or could I get away with not having one for now?
I've been looking at some apartments downtown, which are in an area I'd really like to live but the commute seems like it might be a hassle via public transportation. Also, though it is my preferred area, I'm wondering if I would then be isolated socially if most other students live in certain neighborhoods.
I'm not familiar with Austin and would appreciate if anyone could offer me suggestions for neighborhoods, apartment complexes etc etc
It's probably more expensive to live downtown than it is to live a few miles away with a decent car.
Anyways, I got a really good deal on a studio that's walking/biking distance from campus, so I'm content. Takes less than 10 minutes to drive downtown anyways, and it's not like I can't use public transportation from where I am.

Idk, the latter sounds like a good excuse to take a day trip to Austin.TheWalrus wrote:Welp no longer going there.WokeUpInACar wrote:We were disappointed to find no booze at the patio party. Re: Texas Class of 2017
All of this is true. I'd hate not having a car here, although I know some people doing it. And downtown is expensive as fuck, you'd probably pay less for an apt closer to campus and with a car payment.El Principe wrote:You're really gonna try to foot it in Texas without a car?ojala wrote:Hi All! Re: Texas Class of 2017
Do we have any word on what the incoming class size will be? The last two years were just above 300, and the Facebook group currently has 253 members (although i'm sure this number isn't completely representative).
Any thoughts/speculation?

The word I heard was they were holding that line. Notch above 300 and add a fuck ton of transfers.

I met a prof for lunch and he said the benefit of UT is you'll be in a class of 300 with a faculty and resources of 500 so I'd imagine they're holding around 300.

I wonder if that means we can get two lockers? I'd prefer a separate food/beverage holding area.Attax wrote:I met a prof for lunch and he said the benefit of UT is you'll be in a class of 300 with a faculty and resources of 500 so I'd imagine they're holding around 300.

Moved down to Austin this past weekend. My wife started her new job this week, so I've been setting up our apartment and exploring a little. So far I've ate at Torchys and had Amy's ice cream, both are great.

In fact I'll prob get 3 lockers! But I hear you can complain and they'll give you something to stop the complaining.Will_McAvoy wrote:Oh yeah true. As second-class students we should be happy they grace us with one.Attax wrote:If so I bet they give them to in state kids first (too soon?)

Don't get too excited bro, as you'll probably get let down. To paraphrase a legendary 1L, it's the ugliest of the top law schools.choward014 wrote:Visiting the law school myself over the next couple of days. Very excited

That's what I've been hearing. Is there ANYTHING nice about it besides employment prospects?

There's like a new addition with a courtroom in it that's real nice. The cafe area has been redone and seems nice enough. It's your generic 1970s state campus building though.choward014 wrote:That's what I've been hearing. Is there ANYTHING nice about it besides employment prospects?
ETA: The patio on the back is real nice, and I would say it's a relatively pretty school from the outside.

I still think it is the nicest building on campus. Honestly the classrooms would be nice if they'd just update those ugly seats! The new section is absolutely GORGEOUS and modern though. Everything else though, expect your low expectations to be underwhelming already.
Although, compared to UMN this looks like the white house.
